Last year's rookies-top community prospects for future performance #8

After a runoff, and a lot of interesting discussion, Elvis Andrus's supporters narrowly but decisively (54% to 45%)prevail in choosing him as the 7th best prospect among last year's rookies over Colby Rasmus.  While there certainly is an argument to be made for simply naming Rasmus #8, I am convinced in situations like this that you never know what will happen once the Andrus vote gets distributed so the best thing to do is just let it play itself out.  Here is where we are so far:

1. Matt Wieters, C Baltimore

2. Tommy Hanson, P Atlanta

3. Andrew McCutchen, of Pittsburgh

4. Brett Anderson, P Oakland

5. Gordon Beckham, 3b CHW

6. Rick Porcello, P Detroit

7. Elvis Andrus, ss Texas

Star-divide

Drew Stubbs and Nolan Reimold receive less than 5% of the vote and are temporarily dropped from the voting.

temporarliy dropped from the poll (percentage and round in parens) Matt Laporta 2% (5), Derek Holland 2% (5), Ricky Romero 0% (5), Cameron Maybin 2% (5), Mat Gamel 1% (6), Drew Stubbs 2% (7), Nolan Reimold 2% (7)

This round we'll add back last year's NL rookie of the year Chris Coghlan and give a first chance to last year's AL rookie of the year, Andrew Bailey.  We'll also give another shot to Kyle Blanks and a first look to Gerardo Parra.

Next round I will definitely give Jeff Niemann a first look and get Derek Holland back in the poll.  I'll probably also give Matt Laporta another shot.  Please suggest others.

shocked

that Price has fallen this far for being in the major leagues and pitching fairly well for a rookie starter. He didn’t get shelled, his numbers weren’t Hanson esque but he’s also in the AL East. I still have very high hopes for him and I would take him over Andrus without question and probably over McCutchen and Beckham too.

I voted for Rasmus, but Price is certainly next on my list. Maybe it’s semantics, but I don’t think he’s fallen so much as the other guys have passed him by having excellent seasons. His (likely) being #7 on this list says less about him, and more about the ceilings of the guys ahead of him.

…and by #7, I of course mean #9. Stupid counting.

Yup

I think we’re still the the ranks of front of the rotation starters and all star level players. Its not like we’re putting Brett Gardner or Garrett Jones in front of him.

Also… Jeff Niemann?

Last year was a really dynamite rookie class.

Of course, some of them might not have been called up if not for the economy but the point remains
