Everts
Supposedly, he’s now a minor league free agent: http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=6994
Like the Storen grade, but C+ seems low for Desmond.

Desmond
Agreed on the C+ being low. He was always a tools guy who finally got healthy and put together a truly impressive year at three levels (including MLB). I don’t think he’s going to post an .850 OPS in the bigs next season, but I wouldn’t be completely shocked if he did. That’s got to merit at least a B-.

Disagree
I don’t think anything really changed for Desmond this year except his babip went through the roof. He’s always been a guy who K’s around 20% of the time and hits .240-.260 … all of a sudden I’m supposed to believe he’s K’s around 20% of the time and hits .300+? No dice. I think he’ll be a decent enough major leaguer, but nothing really valuable as he doesn’t do anything especially well or horribly poorly … uninspiring BB rate, mediocre/bad contact, limited power … he’s just blah across the board. I think C+ is perfectly fine for him.

I think you also have to have pretty serious concerns as to whether he can play SS at the major league level. He can look frankly amateurish out there at times (and too many times at that), and seems to have real problems with focus.
My Bucardo is better than yours.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

desmond
I have been going back and forth between B- and C+ for him.

I wonder if he hamate bone fix has hepled him with he's hitting.
From what I understand of the Ryan Zimmerman’s hamate bone repair he had felt that years before he had it repaired. It would be interesting to know how long this was effecting his swing or actually the ball contact impact. From what I’ve read doesn’t this condition cause a funny bone effect when balls make contact. Oh well, I’m probably just a overly hopeful fan. Thx for your comments John.

Burgess still impresses me
I still really like Burgess despite his 2009 performance, would rate him a solid B but that’s just nit picking.

Espinosa is a B/B+ prospect for me....
One of the most complete SS prospects in the game.
by soccerman0 on Nov 18, 2009 2:21 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
He's the SS of the future for the Nats and...
… Desmond is the 2nd baseman of the future is he can continue to hit. With Nijer in center that’s pretty solid up the middle.

impressed?
so he moves up a level and struggles incredibly yet we should overlook that. i’m no scout but the dude is unbelievably overweight, and he hit .235 last year to go with 135 strikeouts. what about that is impressive? at this point, with his weight, he won’t even make it to the big leagues, let alone start.

Brad Peacock maybe?
It’s probably not a travesty if he doesn’t make the book, but I see some positives there.

Brandon King
over Robinson Fabian or especially Greg Veloz (the epitome of “you can’t steal 1st”).
by VladiHondo on Nov 18, 2009 8:03 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Agree
I’d prefer to see Brandon King over some of the older bullpen guys

King
I think I can fit him in. Long way away though.

Evan Bronson
is he an Alaniz type, great in low levels that has trouble at AA?
You gotta like his numbers in the NYPL – 0.55 ERA, 49 IP, 28 H, 0 HR, 3 BB, 38 K’s.

bronson
interesting late-round sleeper but might be too far away. At this point I’d rather go with Estrada, who, while not a great prospect, could conceivably contribute in 2010.

Other potential considerations
The two HS bats drafted higher in 2009 (Roberto Perez and Michael Taylor).
Peacock (as previously mentioned)
and the other guy that intrigues me is Clayton Dill

Brian when is your list coming. I loved yours from two years ago.
The break down was a piece of art. If BA / John Sickels / BP give us sketches of the Nats farm system you give us the fully CG Pixsar version. Please keep it up.

John please don't forget Mandel.
He’s had a good 2009 ,as well as, the work he’s done at the AFL.

Mandel
Not enamoured of his low strikeout rate. But I’ll consider it.

Why?
didn’t the Giants win the poll?
did I miss something?
by WTF on Nov 18, 2009 10:47 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Giants are the team after the next
After the Nationals, it will be the Angels and then the Giants
See here (http://www.minorleagueball.com/2009/11/1/1109084/next-team-poll)

changes
Cut Rosenbaum and Fabian in favor of Bronson and Peacock.

Though it would've been great finding out
what you think of Anny Rosenbaum.

John
Should we Nats fans be happy with the front office team that Rizzo and Kasten are putting together? Does this boad well for the Nats future? ( Bowden being gone is have the battle, eh)
by Berndaddy on Nov 18, 2009 2:29 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
It seems all the hires are "old school"
though Rizzo has said how a player projects has to measured at some point against how he performs. Do you think the Nats have swung all the back to older scouts who value projectability and physical tools rather than results and thinking plate command is a tool?
I was hoping for a healthy mix of old school and moneyballers, but I just don’t see it so far.
Plus, John, what’s your take on the Davey Johnson hire?
by VladiHondo on Nov 19, 2009 9:19 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
strasburg straight A
good call john
glad all the “he’s never thrown a professional pitch” rabble didn’t sway you from the obvious talent he has
