Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Hot Stove Talks

It's that time of year again. I'm in a 20 team keeper league and have been offered the following trade.

I would receive:

Kazuo Matsui ( $1.00 for 3 yrs)

Carlos Zambrano ($1.00 for 1yr)

Brando Wood ($1.00 for 5 yrs)

I'd rather have Scott Elbert ($1.00 for 5 yrs) instead of Matsui.

for

Torii Hunter ($59.00 for 1yr)

Dustin Pedroia ($1.00 for 6 years)

Please give me your input. I think I might be placcing too much value on Pedroia( there are other good SS in the draft in 2010). Plus this allows me extra cap room to add a front line player at the draft.

thanks as always,

Millerhugs

DONT DO IT!!!

Get rid of Hunter if you want, but I wouldn’t trade Pedroia unless I was blown away and that would not blow me away at all.

I don’t think you are getting great value here either. and I think Pedroia is a 2b, not SS. And he is one of the top guys at that position.

But why is hunter $59 and Zabrano is only $1? That seems effed.

can’t give up Pedroia at $1 for 6 years, that’s insane. Flat out dump Hunter to get rid of that contract, but getting rid of pedroia at that price is insanity.

yea this isnt a serious offer is it?

i mean hunter at 59 is laughable if you can get guys like pedroia at 1, but its one more year… where as pedroia should be a top 50 option overall and a top 5 at 2B for years to come… and you have him locked up for 1 dollar for the next 6 years

theres no way id make this trade

Do it...

Just cut Hunter and get Pedroia for the other 3.

Reverse that

I thought you were getting Pedroia. Just cut Hunter and keep your 2B.

Here are Pedroia's projections for 2010

Bill James:

.307/.378/.465, 15 HR, 16 SB, 109 R, 75 RBI

CHONE:

.304/.375/.452, 14 HR, 12 SB, 94 R, 67 RBI

He’s led the league in runs the last two years. I dont think you really want to give 6 years @ $1 of that up… kid is only entering his age 26 season.

not even a respectale offer

kaz…done
zambrano…pretty good, but not the stud he once was and only one year on his contract.
wood…i have zero faith in that guy ever being a productive hitter.

that for pedroia for 6 yrs isn’t even a starting offer imo.

I think there's clearly a salary component here...

that we’re not seeing. What is your league cap? Is Hunter’s salary as terrible as it looks? If so, you might have to give up more value to dump him, but could get a lot of it back in the auction.

Anybody answering here without addressing the salary concerns (which we don’t know about anyway) isn’t seeing the whole picture.

Still not worth losing Pedroia

I would stop concerning myself with getting a decent return and just dump Torii’s salary for the best deal I can get. You’ll be better able to reallocate that money in the auction. Don’t give him away, but seriously scale down your expectations for the return.

Don’t throw good money after bad and lose Pedroia. You can still accomplish your goals of moving Hunter and getting cap relief without getting rid of a great value.

Yep.

Pedroia’s deal is as good as Hunter’s is bad. The two together average $30, which is still a plus for both if you’ve got 25 man rosters and a $400 cap. With Hunter alone however, you’d be best off taking ANYTHING you can get just to free up the money. That’s assuming you’ve got a straightforward auction with decent options for your money.
