Open Q/A Thread

The previous thread was getting unwieldy, so here's a new one. Go ahead and ask questions here about players in the Arizona Fall League, and I will answer them starting tomorrow.  Be patient as I'm also working on the book right now.

Scheppers

I was very impressed him in the Rising stars game, what was the feeling of people down there regarding his long term role? Also, does he have a third pitch? I know he throws a FB/CB

by Deech on Nov 14, 2009 5:02 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

In addition

Did you get a look at his delivery? Do you think it will cause problems down the road?

I like steak.

scheppers

I didn’t see anything in the delivery that was a huge red flag. His FB and CB are both plus pitches, but he didn’t throw a changeup that I saw. He didn’t need too. General consensus was that he could help very quickly in relief, but that his upside as a starter would also be very high, though it would take him a bit longer to develop in that role (needing the changeup) and that given his history of shoulder problems his workload would have to be monitored closely.

How much better of a prospect is Josh Bell than Brandon Snyder? What is Brandon Snyder’s potential?

I'm still worried about Waring's defense

Agreed that Waring should be in the debate.
Bell, Snyder, Waring.

waring

Frankly I didn’t get a good look at Waring.

Bell has more value than Snyder because Bell has more defensive options availalbe to him. Snyder nailed outside pitches when I saw them, driving them to the opposite field, but seemed like he could be vulnerable to inside stuff.

Scott Gorgen

what kind of stuff did he have? What’s his potential?

didn’t see him. Reports I have are of excellent command but mediocre velocity, good changeup though.

Matt McBride

Any chance he can stay at C? Will he hit enough for 1B/LF?

by oplaid on Nov 14, 2009 5:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I saw McBride just three times, but ....

… every time he just flat mashed. Ball makes a different sound when he hits it. If he can carry that over against big league pitching, I’d find a place to play him … even if it was DH.

by squarejaw on Nov 15, 2009 3:11 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

mcbridge

I like McBride quite a bit as a sleeper. He won’t be a gold glove catcher but he’s not terrible, and his bat has a lot of potential if he can show some improved plate discipline at higher levels.

The Indians have about 80 catchers in the upper minors/majors. Santana, Shoppach, Marson, Toregas, Gimenez, McBride….

I don't really know what i'm talking about, but..

Watching Daniel Gutierrez reminded me a little of Javier Vasquez.. is that a fair comp?

Eh….that’s not one that would have occurred to me.

Gutierrez has very good stuff but there’s a reason the Royals were willing to trade him. Perhaps the off-field issues are overblown, but perhaps not.

He can’t hit. He won’t hit.

HIs solid glove makes him a potential utility player but I think the Tigers are deluding themselves if they think he’ll hit enough to be a regular.

Leake and Boxberger

What are your thoughts on Mike Leake and Brad Boxberger? Does Leake project as a #2 and Boxberger as a #3/4 at the big league level? In terms of just pure stuff, does Boxberger come close to measuring up to Leake? What are some realistic comps for each? Thanks!!

by Lark11 on Nov 14, 2009 6:49 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

leake

Leake didn’t look so hot to me….I thought his location was a bit off. I’m not really WORRIED about him, but he was still working the rust off when I saw him. He doesn’t have the plus velocity of a stereotypical number one, but I think he can be a solid number three/four starter and that has value.

Boxberger looked like crap in the game I saw him pitch. People who saw him in other games were much more impressed, but in the game I saw he had nothing….poor command of so-so stuff. In other games he was reportedly much more impressive, with some scouts projecting that he could help in relief very quickly.

fields

I saw Fields and wasn’t that impressed. He has a good arm but wasn’t showing the GREAT arm he demonstrated in college. Looked like a back-end bullpen guy to me, not a future closer.

Triunfel….big guy, looks like he’s already losing his speed, I don’t see him staying at shortstop but he has a great arm. Bat…I dunno. The size and strength are there but his approach really varies from at-bat to at-bat, sometimes he looks polished, sometimes he still looks very raw.

What’s the story with Lance Zawadzki? Never heard much about him but there he is playing in the rising stars game.

by Bear4499 on Nov 15, 2009 8:15 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Zawadzki ...

I saw him only twice, but he really impressed me. Hitting left handed, he drilled it down the third base line … hitting right handed, he ripped it to right field. He ran like his hair was on fire. I’m not a good enough observer to know if he’s going to make it in the Bigs, but, honestly, I really liked the way he played. He was one of five or six guys who really impressed me.

Scouting Opinions - Biggest outlier

John – just a general question. What was the biggest outlier opinion you hear from a scout while you were down there? Something that seemed completely different compared to the “consensus”.

Thanks for taking the time to do a Q&A thread like this. I know a lot of us appreciate all the hard work!

by guru4u on Nov 15, 2009 9:09 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

outlier

Well tha’ts hard to say. The Mejia thing was interesting but that’s the whole problem with small sample sizes, both statistical and scouting.

For the most part I didn’t hear anything that made me think the source was crazy. Scouts are human, all of them have strenghts and weaknesses, and what you see one day may be totally different than what you see another day. There’s also a certain amount of groupthink you have to cut through, but again that’s as true for statheads as it is for scouts.

Hopefully this wasn't already asked....

What about his swing specifically? I was out there this weekend and he has a really weird weight transfer. Do you/scouts have any concerns?

by Birdfan01 on Nov 15, 2009 1:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

brown

I love Brown’s tools, and he’s made a huge amount of progress over the last three years. When I saw him, I thought his swing was kinda awkward and long, but I’ve been told that it looked better earlier in the season. When players get tired their swings can start to break down, and I think that’s what happening to Brown, just like when a pitcher gets tired his mechanics can get out of whack. I’m not truly concerned at this point, but it’s clear he’ll need another year in the minors.

I was wondering what your thoughts on Antonio Jimenez, Mastraoianni, and Zawadzki are

The Jays have pushed Jimenez very hard despite being a young. Mastraoianni had a great year despite being essentially a non-prospect before hand and I am wondering if you have the chance to see him. Zawadzki really impressed me with his range at 2B in the All-Star game, do you think he can be a good defender at short?

Mickey Storey

This guy kind of came out of nowhere and put up great numbers as a reliever. Did you hear anything about whether he could hold up at higher levels or will his loopy curveball be less effective against more advanced hitters?

Also there have been rumblings around the A’s boards that he may be a candidate to be tried as a starter. Was there any talk about his around Arizona or if he had the potential to start?

Didn’t see him or hear anything about him in Arizona. His numbers this year are certainly intriguing and he’ll be in my book for sure.

by John Sickels on Nov 16, 2009 12:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Storey

As John didn’t see him, let me chime in with what I wrote for ESPN earlier in the AFL:

“Storey was a 31st-round pick in the 2008 draft out of Florida Atlantic and, after a strong showing in 14 appearances in rookie league play that year, absolutely tore up the minor leagues this season. He made appearances across four levels of the minors, from low Class A all the way up to Triple-A, and struck out 71 in 51 2/3 innings, giving up just 27 hits and walking eight. That’s a 0.68 WHIP, if you’re wondering, although he did get lucky on his batting average on balls in play.

You might think Storey throws smoke with those kinds of stats, but that’s not the case. The right-hander works backward with great command of his curve, and although he’s listed at 6-foot-2, he’s shorter than that. He will hit 91 mph on a good day but usually sits at 86-90. He’ll throw a low-80s slider that looks more like a cutter and a mid-70s straight change, but his bread and butter is locating a hook on which he can vary the speeds anywhere from 68 mph to 77 mph.

His delivery is a little unorthodox — he opens his front side early with a head jerk at the end. It’s somewhat surprising he commands the ball as well as he does, and he repeats the delivery better than I expected. When you have excellent command of a good breaking ball, you’re going to get hitters in the low minors out, but you need more than that as you move up. If you looked at Storey just statistically, you’d think he was a future closer candidate, but watching him, you can see that’s not the case."

I think trying him as a starter would be bad idea.

Speaking of A’s prospects, I also posted some Grant Desme stuff in the other AFL Q&A thread if interested.

Very good defensive catcher, hits mistakes well with power, but his swing is long, and he’s going to struggle to hit much at higher levels, likely not even enough to be a backup.

you're overthinking this one TB

(to continue a theme) though we often get detailed scouting reports on a pitcher’s pitchability, rarely do we get a breakdown of a hiitter’s hittability. Given the criticism of Moreland as a hitter coming into the system (and of his performance during his first year), I’m merely trying to assess whether or not he will be the next Jason Botts a LH platoon bat or get regular time. Can you give me a detailed analysis of his swing/stance/hands and tell me why that will translate into a big league regular DH/1B? I thought not…

His prospect value was being tremendously inflated. He’s just not that good and his stuff isn’t that good. He’s a decent prospect, but ceiling is nothing special. I won’t hazard a guess as to why he was talked up so much, but I think you’re on the right path there…

Besides, you got him for a guy you didnt need that was overpaid…
