BA WAS TOP 10

SEE BA STORY HERE

1. Stephen Strasburg, rhp

2. Derek Norris, c

3. Drew Storen, rhp

4. Ian Desmond, ss

5. Danny Espinosa, ss

6. Chris Marrero, 1b

7. Jeff Kobernus, 2b

8. Justin Maxwell, of

9. Michael Burgess, of

10. Destin Hood, of

Only name I'm surprised to see is Kobernus... a second rounder this year who got 41 AB in the NYPL before going down with a season ending injury (by the looks of his stats). I don't know much about him and don't recall hearing his name much leading up the draft.

What do people make of Hood at this point? A former Alabama high school football star, Hood has a high ceiling but hasn't shown a lot in the minors since being drafted in 2008. Struggled in the GCL that year, repeated it with big numbers this year, but then struggled in the NYPL after that.

Solid List

With Kobernus being the only real head scratcher. He was a reach in the second round, and was drafted there because he was signable, which makes sense when you’re giving your first rounder $15M.

Much better top 10 than last year. I’d say this is a top 6-10 farm system right now, depending upon where you place your emphasis. Hopefully Rizzo can keep things moving in the right direction.

Nats system is still bottom 3rd

after Strasburg, who do you see can be a solid MLer? Norris, Storen as a reliever, everyone else has major questions – Marrero = can he field? He has yet to hit above .293 above the GCL. Desmond & Espinosa project to be utility guys, in JMax you got a 26 yr old “top” prospect – that should be a major indicator of system weakness, especially when he is at most a 4th OF! Burgess has hit a rut in A+, Kobernus was an overdraft and barely even played.

Another indicator is all the supposed pitching depth didn’t make the list, Josh Smoker, Jack McGeary, Colton Willems? The Nats have a long way to go to make it top 10, but at least they have adult supervision now.

I see lots of potential major leaguers

The guys you mentioned, first of all. Marrero should probably end up being a decent bat albeit at COF/1B. Desmond and Espinosa both have the potential to be above-average major leaguers, questions with them revolve around polish. Burgess was always going to be a project but he has the raw tools to put on his best Glenallen Hill impression. All the guys in the lower tiers of the system, many of whom are extremely raw but with a ton of upside.

I don’t think the system is all that hot, but it speaks more to the fact that the Nats draft like the Phillies and develop like the Pirates than a true lack of talent.

Justin Maxwell

Why? He will be 26 at the start of next season and hasn’t done a ton since 07. Not that I don’t think he has tools and will be ok in the bigs, but not #8

I guess that late season walk off grand slam vs K-Rod left quite an impression.

Yeah, Maxwell isn’t a top 10 prospect. Very pleased to see Burgess on this list. He’s so, so young, I’m happy that BA hasn’t forgotten about him.

As far as Hood goes, he had the exact same peripherals last year in the GCL as he did this year (both times with a K rate below 20%). His IsoP in Rookie Ball was a phenomenol .284, but I suspect he struggled with off-speed stuff at Lo-A. Hood will be 20 all year next year, and will hopefully split the season between Lo and Hi-A. He struck out a bunch but I have a hunch he’ll control that better next year. I’m going to buy into the massive power potential. How he adjusts to more advanced pitching will determine his success but frankly I think he’s going to take awhile.

I don't agree with this ranking

It should go- 1.Stephen Strasburg 2.Derek Norris 3.Danny Espinosa 4.Drew Storen 5.Chris Marrero 6.Ian Desmond 7.Brad Meyers 8.Eury Perez 9.Destin Hood 10.Marcos Frias

Be real with yourself.

Aaron Thompson

What I don’t understand is why he’s getting no play as a possible top 10 guy. I thought I remember him learning a new pitch with surprising effectiveness upon his trade to the Nats, which accounts for his increased K rate.
