Elias releases MLB free-agent rankings
Personally, I'd be peeved if my favorite team signed one of these Type A free agents at the expense of a first-round draft pick. It appears that some of them are locks to stay with their current teams (i.e. Rafael Betancourt) strictly by virtue of a club not wanting to yield its first-rounder.
Also, check out the link to the interesting story from Driveline Mechanics on the outdated criteria that the Elias Sports Bureau uses to determine their free-agent rankings.

Off the bat:
Darren Oliver, Billy Wagner and John Grabow shouldn’t be Type A.

Re: Off the bat:
Agreed. I also don’t think it would be inaccurate to say that 90-95 percent of Type A relievers are not worth the first-round pick it costs to acquire them.

Adrian Beltre is a type B.
Orlando Cabrera is a type A. So is Troy Glaus, who played in about 15 games this season.
Something is very wrong here.

Re: Adrian Beltre is a type B.
I think the rankings are calculated using two years of data, if that helps explain some of the curious designations.

I know exactly how the rankings are calculated
They’re a bizarre concoction of ancient statistics, with playing time treated as a separate category instead of modifying the other statistics. The whole thing is unbelievably idiotic.

i accidentally voted no
obviously i meant yes. it needs to be radically overhauled. and it needs to include defense some how, but that will be difficult until a more sure fire way of determining defensive value is found.

What I think is More Likely
Is they will change the value of compensation. The players union is pissed that their players aren’t getting signed to anything close to market value because of the draft picks involved…

Yankees
Have to be happy to see Damon listed as a type A. They’ll offer him arbitration, since they’ll gladly take him on a 1 year deal, and when he declines, they’ll either resign him (when everyone stays away due to the required comp) or get a 1st round pick and a supplemental pick for a player they have no long term interest in.

but we have to be upset
about Hairston not getting the B that seemed obvious. Don’t really care about Matsui too much though he should have been too. He is slightly more dangerous to offer arb too. Damon and Hairston would have gotten us some major draft picks.
I really wish Bruney was a free agent too. lol at that type B. lololol.

It's a joke.
It’s just as much a joke as the gold glove awards. We’ve made humongous strides in terms of player evaluation the last ten years, and Major League Baseball has stood frozen in time. I wonder what it will take to get the league to take action?

I expect there to be changes in the next CBA
I’d guess that the players, owners, and agents are all generally unhappy with the current system.

Re: I expect there to be changes in the next CBA
You’d have to wonder if the owners and agents know that there are more sophisticated ways to evaluate defense than fielding percentage, and I’m not sure that they do.

Why didn't they release the entire rankings this year?
They released all player rankings last year, not just the rankings of free agents. What’s up with them holding back the entire list this year?

It's not like we aren't going to ridicule them anyway.
