Community Prospect List - Royals
On to the Royals. I see tons of potential lists. Melville, Montgomery, Hosmer, Lamb, Moustakas, Crow, and Myers are all possible top 5 candidates. This system is really top heavy and could be another top 8 system.
My list:
1. Mike Montgomery
2. Hosmer
3. Wil Myers
4. Crow
5. Melville

Been pondering this one for quite a bit
and will be curious what some Royals fans, like doublestix, have (although IIRC, he posted his top 5 in another thread recently),
I’m thinking, as of right now
1. Aaron Crow – I’m not sure I like this, but I also think he has the most upside of all their arms and I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt on being advanced enough.
2. Mike Montgomery – I think he’s dang good, and there’s a part of me that thinks his body of work should give him the edge over Crow, but I just don’t love him.
3. Danny Duffy – I’m probably overrating him, I know that. But I can’t help it. I think he’s almost a bit underrated.
4. Eric Hosmer – He’s young.
5. Mike Moustakas – He’s young.
My brain’s telling me that I should move Hosmer/Moustakas up one each, slide Duffy to 6, and move Myers in at 5. They’ve really got a nice group of talent, albeit, a lot of it very far away.

Finally the minors are seeing some real talent
1. Monty
2. Duffy
3. Moose
4. Hoz
5. Melville
If Crow has a good showing in the AFL he could jump into the argument.

2. Danny Duffy
3. Aaron Crow
4. Eric Hosmer

H.M. Tim Melville, Jeff Bianchi, William Myers, David Lough(OF), Carlos Rosa ?
Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?
I tend to think so

I like Myers at two...
but I was wondering why you don’t have Montgomery higher and why you have Crow so high. I think Crow will be a bust because his lasck of a third pitch and terrible delivery.

lack of third pitch?
nope

All I know is that
Crow has, without a doubt, 2 pitches (fastball and slider) that grade out as plus, if not better. On top of this, he is almost major league ready. Montgomery looks good, but I don’t believe he has the ace upside of a Crow-type pitcher. Montgomery’s repertoire doesn’t strike me as excellent, although he is a lefty with a lot of talent.

Crow to AFL?
I remember reading some rumors when he signed that Crow would be sent to the AFL this season. Anybody hear anything recently on whether that will happen? I don’t see anything specific by searching Google news.
by jibs on Oct 10, 2009 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
apparently not
rumor was that he would, but i don’t think so. think he’s just going to throw in instructs and the “junior AFL”

Lack of an average third pitch anyway...
he has good potential, but many believe his mechanics will be his downfall. He has the worst mechanics I’ve seen from this past years draft. If he doesn’t get hurt, he could be a force at the end of a bullpen, but I just can’t see him being a starting pitcher.

PGCC, BA, MLB.com...
Not only did Crow impress scouts with his fastball velocity, but he held it deep into games, got good movement on the pitch and worked efficiently with it to both sides of the plate low in the strike zone. He complemented his fastball with an excellent slider at 83-85 mph and a quality changeup.
2008 – His changeup can become a solid third pitch, but he has had little use for it in college.
2009 – Crow used his downtime to get stronger and to work on his changeup.
Changeup: Much improved from a year ago, it’s a Major League average pitch now.

Major League Ready?
I don’t know if you can make that statement. He’s barely pitched in the last year. The lost year and the concerns about his delivery make me tentative to really endorse him.

Almost major league ready...
and I can see that. I just can’t see him being a starter without fixing his mechanics.

Yes
Neither offer any defensive/positional premium and both have major question marks about their ability to be impact offensive players. Plenty of time to turn it around for both of them, but I think the arms and the catcher are better prospects at this point.
by jibs on Oct 10, 2009 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
that's fair
but I don’t really see Melville offering that much either. I remember BA saying his ceiling is most likely a #3, if all works out. Moose’s home/road splits show the difficulty of hitting in Wilmington, if he struggles next year in the TL, there’s no excuse.
by MightyMoose on Oct 10, 2009 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Melville
The scouting report that BP posted in September had his fastball consistently 92-94 with movement, sharp curve and a solid changeup. 96 Ks in 97 innings in full season ball at 19 years old. With some sharpening of his command I see a future impact major league starter.
I agree that Moustakas’ home stats this year were pretty fluky and made his season look worse than it actually was, but I still have big concerns about his ability to take walks and get on base. I’d have Moustakas 6th and Hosmer 7th on this list, so it’s not like I feel they’re non-prospects or anything. I think that ranking either of them above Melville right now would be almost solely due to their draft pedigree, and even at that Melville was considered the top prep arm at the start of the 2008 “draft season” so he has pedigree going in his favor as well.
by jibs on Oct 10, 2009 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, it was really tough for #2.
I ultimately went with Myers, because I believe he can be a major offensive force at catcher, but Melville has everything going for him.

5. Duffy
Melville and Duffy is pretty much a toss up for #5 and I’m not a big Crow fan.

Anyone want to take a chance on where Daniel Guiterez would land in the Royals top
10?

Montgomery

Hosmer
Moustakas
Duffy
Melville
Crow
Dwyer
Lamb
Bianchi
I really like Dwyer and could see him or Myers being number 1 a year from now.

My Top 5
1-Crow
2-Montgomery
3-Duffy
4-Moustakas
5-Myers
….Then would go…
6-Hosmer
7-Melville
8-Lough
9-Lamb
10-Dwyer
Myers, Melville, Lamb, Lough, Hosmer, Dwyer, Bianchi
I think this is a pretty deep Top 10 (but I might be a little Royal-biased), and I’ll be considering 8 of them for my Top 100 or 150 prospect list this winter.

top ten. I think all 10 players you have listed have a decent chance to be above average major league players.

I still like him and think he could be a solid player.

platoon 1B/DH for me
he’s a LH hitter so that could have some value. not convinced he’s a starter on a good club though. gonna rank him kinda low on my top 25…probably in the 14-17 range.

He’s still a better hitter than almost anyone on the major league roster.

than Jacobs and Teahen.

yes
that was one of the biggest f ups of the year. not seeing if he was better than jacobs. maybe he’s not, but there’s really no excuse to not give him a shot at DH.

Never liked him
Decent bat, like his patience, but he’s a guy with zero defensive value and his success has all come when repeating leagues with old ARLs. I dont doubt he’s made legit improvements over the past few years, but I just cant see him ever being even an average 1B/DH… so really, what kind of prospect is that? He’s old now, too. He could be a nice bench bat and play a major league role, but he’s very unexciting.

everything i've read is that scouts still love him.
legit power, had a rough learning year, etc… believe me, by about July i was thinking he was terrible… idk. gotta go with the scouting reports sometimes

The Royals top 5 is deep - here's my shot
1. Mongomery
2. Moustakas
3. Duffy
4. Myers
5. Crow
Hosmer takes a drop to 6 as his first full season was a disappointment. Montgomery’s great season with Wilmington/Burlington might have him starting at AA after his first season. Tim Melville is a good prospect too but won’t crack this group.

Just A Bit Of Info
7 players have gotten votes. 5 possible spots makes it 35 possible placements. Only 6 squares are not filled.
Or in an easier to explain way.
4 players have #1 Votes
6 have #2 votes
All 7 have had #3 votes
6 have had #4 votes
and 5 have had #5 votes.
And all the players are top 100 material.
That’s what you call a strong and balanced system.
