Fantasy Trade: Perez/Holland for Stras
This was a fantasy trade I completed last night. As usual, I'm having some buyer's remorse, so I wanted to get some community feedback. I have a rebuilding team with tons of young talent, too many draft picks to use for the upcoming draft, and a nearly full minor league roster.
The way I see it, Perez and Holland both have huge upside, and although Stras' is higher, I hedge my bets a little in that I essentially have two chances instead of one. And Strasburg's value may never be higher.
I trade Strasburg and an inconsequential draft pick (something like 100th overall) for Martin Perez and Derek Holland.
You all know wunderkind Strasburg, but here are some numbers for Perez and Holland.
Perez:
Sally league: 93.2IP 105K 33BB 2.31 ERA 1.58GO/AO
Texas league: 21IP 14K 5BB 5.57 ERA 1.25 GO/AO
Holland
AL: 138.1IP 107K 47BB 6.12 ERA

's the right move
Quantity > quality when it comes to pitching prospects.

…particularly when it’s Quality Quantity. I thought long and hard about having Perez over Strasburg on my top prospects list, but couldn’t pull the trigger. Long story short, production and talent>talent alone.

stras = injuries
also definitely to an extent quantity over quality for pitchers

meh...
could have done better. If I had Strasburg, I’d want a proven commodity for him if I was going to trade him. Why trade him for two guys who just as likely to flame out as he is?

Yes,
But in this case, you get two high potential pitchers instead of one- there’s a bit of insurance there.

Wow the vote is closer than I thought it would be
But this is pretty much my reasoning. Strasburg has the highest ceiling of this group, but I think there’s just as good a chance he flames out as compared to Holland or Perez.
I was also a bit concerned with injuries and just unsure if Washington could develop a pitcher. Of course, I guess that would have to go for Texas as well.

I went Strasburg
but if you’re in a really deep league, then I see the argument for Perez/Holland. While there are always injury inconcerns with any pitcher, which has been the criticism of Stras. in this thread, you must also account for the fact that Holland and Perez are going to be pitching in Texas. That stadium has to off-set something here.

Holland + Someone else = Strasburg
I’d buy into the 2-for-1-ness here if the deal was for Holland and someone else closer to or already in the big leagues.
I’m not knocking Perez in a real world sense, because I understand the enthusiasm over an 18-year-old who’s already reached AA. But, not surprisingly, he struggled there, and it wouldn’t be shocking at all if he struggles there next year as well. Realistically, he could still be three years away from contributing in the big leagues to the extent that Holland did this year. As good as he’s been so far, his youth still makes him a high-risk proposition.
Of course in fantasy you have to find the team that matches up best, not just pick any two highly touted pitchers. But I think in this case if Perez was piece #2, I’d have hung on to Strasburg.

If I was trading Strasburg
I would want Perez or Holland (probably Holland because Perez’s ETA is roughly 2012) and a proven #2/3 SP commodity like Ted Lilly. This way you hedge your bet even more. It all depends on league size, though. This trade works better in a much deeper league as mentioned above.
Now here’s a good question, Brett Anderson or Strasburg straight up? I have Anderson in an 18 team league and the owner with the #1 pick has already offered it to me for Anderson. I’m fairly certain I’ll turn it down as I suspect Anderson will own a Cy Young award by 2020.

by 2020?
Are you serious? You’re playing for ten years from now? I agree with the first part though. I’d want a stud prospect, and a proven major league pitcher If I was going to deal Strasburg.

It's a dynasty league...
I neglected to mention that in my original comment. So I own Anderson (or Strasburg) for the length of their MLB career. I’m just saying sometime before he turns 30 Brett Anderson will put together a Cy Young season. Strasburg may as well, it’s more about who will have the better career overall and at this point I’d lean towards Anderson.
