2010 Middle Infielders
The second part of my series is now up on my blog, and it takes you through the top five college and prep middle infielders.
Here's an excerpt on Rick Hague of Rice:
Hague played third base for Team USA this summer, but he’s probably going to stick at shortstop in pro ball with some improvement. He’s a solid hitter with some work to do with his approach, but he’s got the natural talent to be an above-average hitter from the shortstop position. He might eventually have to move to third base, but he proved he’s an excellent fielder there this summer, so that’s not necessarily a horrible thing. Projected draft slot: Mid-first to early-second round.
Included are Christian Colon, Hague, Jedd Gyorko, Derek Dietrich, and Ross Wilson on the collegiate side, with Manny Machado, Yordy Cabrera, Justin O'Conner, Anthony Wolters, and Zach Alvord on the prep side.

Colon
I think he wins this one pretty easily. I am rather intrigued by Justin O’Conner though. BA had a couple of glowing write-ups on his tools in July.

I met Hague over the summer while he was playing in Cary with team USA
and he was a really nice guy and he also is pretty good on the diamond so I’ll be pulling for him wherever he goes (except Bos/NY of course).
that being said I went with Colon watching him in practice/games over the summer with team USA he has a great bat for a MIF and is also a solid base runner (although he did make a few mistakes on the basepaths but that should improve with experience).

I like Cabrera...
but he won’t stick at short. He could play a good 3B though.

What am I missing with O’Connor?
He’s a gifted athlete, solid hitter and fielder and has elite arm strength. Also has a future on the mound if the bat doesn’t come around.
Why isn’t he a top 10 guy?

Just doesn't have the polish and elite athleticism.
To be a top ten guy as a prep shortstop, you have to have Tim Beckham-like skills as a prep combined with elite athleticism. While O’Conner’s gifted, he’s not elite, and he’s not the most polished kid. But he’s still a first-round candidate, so I’m not saying there’s nothing to like.
