2010 Outfielders
Hey guys, I'm starting a series on 2010 draft prospects where I look at each position grouping and examine the top prospects from the college and prep classes. First up was the outfielders.
Here's an excerpt on Jarrett Parker of Virginia:
A center fielder, Parker’s someone whose draft position is up in the air. He was absolutely horrible on the Cape, and even though it was probably due to exhaustion from a long season, he looked incredibly out of sync. He’s a power-speed type of guy and he should be about average as a pro center fielder. I like his overall patience, but the summer hurt his stock. Projected draft slot: Late-first to late-second round.
Included are Bryce Brentz, LeVon Washington, Parker, Todd Cunningham, and Gary Brown on the collegiate side, with Austin Wilson, Josh Sale, Chevez Clarke, Brian Ragira, and Reggie Golden on the prep side.
What do you think?

bentz
was maybe the best hitter in college last year was definitely the best statistically

Was going to go Brentz
but I think Sale will pull some late helium and pull in the back half of the top 10. I eally don’t expect any of the OF to go in the top 8 as it is.
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook
I like Reggie Golden a lot...
but he isn’t going first. Bryce Brentz will probably tear the cpver off the ball this year and go in the top ten picks. This class of outfielders doesn’t have any really big talents, but it has a lot of depth.
Brian Ragira getting no love?
I think he will have one hell of a year next year.
Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?
I tend to think so

Andy,
Do you think Steve Sabol stays at C or moves to CF? Seems silly to put 6.3 speed behind the plate. If you rated him as an outfielder where would he fit in compared to the guys listed above.

Probably below these guys.
His bat isn’t as strong, and though the athleticism is there, he’d need time to really hone his defensive skills at the position.

Austin Wilson
For the people that say there is not much big talent or huge upside then they obviously haven’t seen Wilson. The kid is huge and athletic as hell. I watched him play in a few showcases and he stands out as a man amongst boys. 6’5", 230 pounds with room to add more size and strength. He looks exactly like Michael Taylor did at the same age.
The raw power is obvious, he can throw 94mph from the OF, and runs like a deer. Only question is whether he puts his raw talent together
Only question is whether he puts his raw talent together
That’s exactly the problem. The opinion on him goes all over the place, with some seeing the tools with enough polish to become a superstar, and others afraid to touch him because they think he’ll bust despite the tools.

re
but that can be said of about 95-99% of all “toolsie” HS studs. Look at the last few HS OF 1st rounders- Donovan Tate, Anthony Hewitt, Aaron Hicks, Levon washington, mike trout, wendell fairly, etc.. all had serious upside but were considered far from the sure thing. The Uptons and Griffey’s (the tools player that is 100% sure thing) come along only once a decade.
IMO, unless there happens to be another sure fire Justin Upton, what I’d look for in a “toolsie” high school OFer is projection and level of competition. Wilson has more projection taht anyone in the draft, including college players, and his level of competition has been high playing year round at a private school in baseball crazy souther california.
Not yet.
It’s probably going to be the spring (draft season) before they take the leap.
