Twins

The Twins are favorites but remember, it is ONE GAME…..anything can happen in one game.

by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2009 5:07 PM EDT reply actions

baker granderson

Scott Baker and Curtis Granderson….two of my favorite players

by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2009 5:08 PM EDT reply actions

infield

Ugh. Tolbert at third. He’s a good utility player but the ghosts of Gary Gaetti and Corey Koskie are offended.

by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2009 5:12 PM EDT reply actions

baker

Baker looks pretty good so far….a couple of lazy flies and a strikeout. Fastball looks like it has some movement high in the zone.

by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2009 5:13 PM EDT reply actions

lineup

If I were managing the Twins, I think I would have gone with an outfield of Span/Gomez/Young, with Kubel as the DH today.

by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2009 5:17 PM EDT reply actions

mauer

A couple of ground balls, then a Mauer double to center.

Gawd I love Joe Mauer.

by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2009 5:19 PM EDT reply actions

inning

first inning, 0-0.

Remember my prediction yesterday….Twins 6, Tigers 4…..Porcello gets through the first three innings fine then the wheels fall off in the fourth.

by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2009 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

second

Hard hit double by Cabrera, bloop hit from Raburn.

Now Inge up. Double play? Maybe…though Baker is a fly ball guy

by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2009 5:28 PM EDT reply actions

With another Granderson flyball out, what do you make of him this year?

His FB% has increased dramatically, his GB% decreased dramatically, his BABIP decreased. Because of these changes, his BA and OBP fell dramatically, as did his OPS. His wOBA has decreased each of the past two years (from an amazing .395 in 2007 to .374 in 2008 to .337 in 2009). But he did hit an all time high in home runs… What Curtis Granderson do we see going forward?

by lions1 on Oct 6, 2009 5:29 PM EDT reply actions

inge

Inge nailed it but right at Cabrera.

It looks to me like Baker isn’t really fooling people right now.

by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2009 5:30 PM EDT reply actions

grandy

Good question. I haven’t thought about Granderson’s future.

by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2009 5:32 PM EDT reply actions

baker

baker got out of it with the popup.

As for Granderson….lions1 you seem like you’ve got all the numbers laid out there well. I’d prefer the way he was a couple of years ago personally.

by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2009 5:33 PM EDT reply actions

Granderson

I think everyone of us would as well but, using XBABIP to account for the types of hits put into play as well as luck, his BABIP should have been .303 this year instead of .276. Now this is obviously lower than the .362 and .317 he hit in the previous years, but it still brings his “should-be” line to .273/.353/.472 and an OPS of .825. Not bad at all. But I guess my question for you is actually, would the Tigers be better served to have him hit in the third hole or cleanup? Although he doesn’t have the quintessential body type, his numbers suggest he should be a middle of the order bat and his pop seems to be wasted in the leadoff spot.

by lions1 on Oct 6, 2009 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

"should be"

Well….“should be”….I’d hit him third myself.

by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2009 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

delmon

Delmon looked bad there against the high fastball….there’s another guy to think about, what happens to Delmon? Does his second half performance presage a 2010 breakout?

by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2009 5:37 PM EDT reply actions

I think Delmon Stays and finally produces

like he did the final 2 months of this year for most of 2010

Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?
I tend to think so

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Oct 6, 2009 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Not in my opinion

He did this last year. He’s shown himself to be a better second half hitter. His defense and plate discipline are still awful.

by Mike I on Oct 6, 2009 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I somewhat disagree.

I agree that he is still dreadful at taking a walk, no doubt about it, but for the past 3 months combined (July, August, September), he has brought his K% below 18%. Through the first half, he was around 30%. That seems to be a significant adjustment and maybe some progress.

by lions1 on Oct 6, 2009 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

delmon

I haven’t looked at his defensive numbers lately. As for the bat….I’d feel better about it if his plate discipline were better. I guess I still don’t trust him.

by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2009 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

He's -14 UZR this season, -16 last season.

He’s amassed a -36 UZR over the last 3 seasons so I think it’s pretty safe to say his true talent level is somewhere in the -12 to -15 range which is beyond awful for a left fielder.

And he already didn’t come close to the ball that Cabrera hit and to me it seemed pretty catchable for a slightly above-average LFer, or maybe I’m just to used to Carl Crawford out there.

whiffs

Whiffs….Jose Morales. Looking good so far for Porcello….his second inning was much stronger than Baker’s.

Porcello looks like he has it today

for sure

Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?

It amazing that his velocity has gone up throughout the season, just hit 95.

Porcello fans Kubel to end the threat. 3-1 Tigers.

Kubel

I know you wrote a prospect retro on him last winter, but what do you think of his year? Can he repeat this kind of season?

by Jeff Reese on Oct 6, 2009 6:08 PM EDT reply actions

yep

Yeah, I think it’s for real. this might be his career peak but I think he can retain the general shape of this season going forward.

by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Emotion talking

But anyone who has a problem with Porcello’s numbers is out of their mind. He’s 20, and held his own. Remember the knock on Verlander used to be he didn’t strike enough guys out, and he just led the league. Porcello can absolutely become an Ace.

by drwmsu1 on Oct 6, 2009 6:09 PM EDT reply actions

He was way lucky on ERA though

He was probably worse than Derek Holland performance/components wise

by viktor06 on Oct 6, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

No

Holland has more K’s that’s about it.

Porcello had a lower BB/9, lower FIP, gave up less homers, and much much better GB rates. Hitters had a .855 OPS against Holland and only a .740 OPS against Porcello.

Besides strikeouts, Porcello was better at basically everything.

by nyy601 on Oct 6, 2009 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

K rate

Verlander fanned about 6/9 as a rookie. It was about 10 this year. I absolutely believe guys with stuff can increase their k rate, and that Porcello has the stuff to do it.

Porcello out for Zach Miner. Hmmmmmm

You could certainly see Porcello’s tremendous talent in this game. He hasn’t put everything together yet, but all-told, considering the jump from A-ball, you have to be very impressed with what he achieved this year.

Looking forward, can he 1) avoid injury 2) domimate more consistently?

On the plus side

Going into the playoffs with a short bullpen is probably a good thing. Right? Right?

No, huh?

different form, but

5-4 Twins is pretty darned close to 6-4 Twins.

Where is Randy Bush when you need him?

John wishes the Twins had guys on the bench who could hit.

Tigers got screwed

Inge got hit, the walk woulda driven in a run..and who knows what would have happened.

AWFUL

TIGERS DESERVED THIS GAME!!!

Yankees disadvantages

1) Unproven post season pitching outside of Andy. Sabathis 7.92 postseason ERA, Burnett never has pitched a postseason game, he could Javy Vazquez this one. Joba, Hughes unproven in big spots. Andy has a bad shoulder, and Guadin is hit or miss.
2) The turf helps the twins and ton and will hurt the yankees.
3) The A-Rod factor, they haven’t won since he’s been there
4) The managers, Gardy has been in the postseason, Girardi hasn’t yet as a manager.
5) Intangibles, the twins have the edge here

by Bravesin07 on Oct 6, 2009 9:52 PM EDT reply actions

heh

So let’s break this down.

  1. Totally conjecture with the exception of Sabathia, who probably just needs more starts to have his career playoff numbers regress back towards his (considerably high) typical level of performance.
  2. Says nothing about the playing ability of either team.
  3. Says nothing about the playing ability of either team other than A-Rod, who has an .852 career OPS in the playoffs.
  4. Says nothing about the playing ability of either team.
  5. Says nothing about the playing ability of either team.
