Moose/Kalish
I think Kalish should be ahead of Mustakas. They are right next to each other on this list. Even park and luck adjusted kalish smokes him.
And perhaps I am singular but I prefer d"arnaud to Espinosa. They are also close on this list. Espinosa has more power but d’Arnaud makes more contact. Espinosa may be the better fielder for all i know.
Overall this seems like a good list. I think the rankings are more in line with mine than cal league list, and happy to see d’Arnaud make it after his very similar half season line couldn’t crack the SALLY top 20.

Danny Espinosa is the best SS prospect in baseball.

good argument
Not that I made much of one myself.
park and luck adjusted numbers:
d’Arnaud .296/.400/.479, Espinosa .276/.383/.477. Espinosa more power and walks a tad more, d’Arnaud strikes out less. Espinosa supposedly has a good glove, and d’Arnaud supposedly ok too. Both a decent threat to steal a base and at a decent rate too.
Is Alcides Escobar still eligible? Ivan De jesus, Jr. missed this year but he is pretty good. Jiovanni Mier? Hak Ju Lee? Too far away? Reese Havens? Will he be 2b?
Not too deep right now.

Disagree
I’d rather have:
Alcides Escobar
Jiovanni Mier
Dee Gordon
Grant Green
Tim Beckham

I would take Espi over all of those
guys minus maybe Escobar.
Espinosa does everything well except hit for contact.

They just don't know, they just don't know.

I would take...
Escobar
Mier
Green
D’arnaud
Over Espinosa. Tim Beckham is SO overrated and I don’t think Gordon or Catro has proven they will be good enough yet. Castro has a much higher ceiling than Espinosa though. D’arnaud is just a good all around player. There are very few holes in his game and I could see him becoming an above average shortstop.

a prominent top 100
did not list Espinosa even in the honorable mention section (d’Aranud either), with 6 guys making the list and 2 on the honorable mentions-not counting Wilmer Flores since no one thinks he’ll stick. It’s a pay list so I will leave it at that.
On 9/1 project prospect did their top 25 position players, which with honorabe mentions took the list to 61. They omitted Espinosa as well, with Escobar, Dejesus and Desmond all in there somewhere.
Which doesn’t mean much but it doesn’t seem like there is much support for the concept that Espinosa is the top ss prospect in baseball. BA had Gordon at number 3 in the cal. Not a huge fan, but he gets a lot of scout love.
Espinosa is intriguing, of course. A ss with plus power for the position.

If Danny Espinosa is not the best SS prospect
Then why was he the starter in the FuturesGame this pass summer? Why didn’t they go with somebody better?

Yeah, that is a really stupid argument, Dagerrrrrr
There were plenty of shitty prospects in the Futures Game. In no way was it indicative of the best prospects in baseball.

d'Arnaud
does everything well and hits for contact (his iso was not that far below espinosa, .186 to .196). I bet Espinosa is a .260/.330/.430 guy, maybe peaking slightly higher, but that’ll be his average from 26-31. A Stephen Drew type, maybe a few more walks and steals.
Starlin Castro and Ruben Tejada are also nice ss prospects. Espinosa again has more power than those guys. Not saying they are as good.
And the Nats have a guy who may be better. Ian Desmond. Although I like Espinosa’s higher walk rate.

castro side note
side note is that castro is expected to develop power as he physically matures, and he is expected to have a plus glove. Basically, most expectations are that, the Castro you see now isn’t close to what he might become, but the keyword there is might.

it's really not that bad
there’s a ton of good prospects in this league for only having 8 teams.

Where is Brad Meyers?
He was one of the best pitching prospects in the Carolina league.

23 year old with 6.5 K's per 9 in that league...
not exactly the profile your looking for of a top 20 prospect.

Rizzo/D'Arnaud
Very interesting neither cracked the Sally top 20, but ranked 12th and 13th in a stronger league.

quality varies
This league’s top 10 or so is awesome, but there’s definitely a dropoff in the quality level after that. Dan Duffy, Rizzo, and D’Arnaud are basically the “best of the rest” here.

d'Arnaud/Rizzo
should certainly have made the Sally list ahead of Melky Mesa.

Danks
What is the projection for Danks?
100 years would have been nice, but 101 years still has a nice ring to it.
by airweino on Oct 7, 2009 1:45 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It's hard to get a good read on Danks...
Is he gonna be a 10-15 home run guy // 20-25?/
Is he gonna cut down on the strikeouts?
Can he stick in CF?
I can’t answer any of those questions, but I love me tha toolz.

Danks
Probably more of a 10-15 HR guy.
He NEEDS to cut down on the K’s to be successful. Could be a Grady Sizemore type with less power? That’s probably an overshoot though.
There’s no question he has the ability to stick in CF. He has speed, great defense, and a plus arm. A move to RF might make sense if you want someone there that has a good arm.
