Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Upcoming Schedule

As always, this is what I want to do ideally, pending falling pianos.

Tuesday: Liveblogging the Twins/Tigers Game
Wednesday: Rookie Review: Andrew Bailey
Thursday: Rookie Review: Jeff Niemann
Friday: ??

Right now I want to review 2009 rookies, how they looked as prospects compared to how they panned out. Anyone in particular you want looked at? I'd like to focus more on guys who weren't massively heralded pre-season (Bailey for example) but who performed well.

Next week I'm going to start writing the 2010 book, so we will start transitioning to organization discussions and prospect lists at that time.

alex avila

Double A to the majors and held his own, can we find out more?

Ricky Romero

He seems to fit your description.

Elvis Andrus

IMO that would be one of the more interesting Rookie Reviews. IIRC a lot of the pre-season buzz was about whether he would break a .600 OPS.

Andrus first

than Holland followed by Borbon. Maybe Feliz when you get time. :)

Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year

I understand what you'd like to do

But I’d like it if you looked at some massively heralded prospects that were way hyped and then struggled. Porcello and Cahill come to mind. What do they need to do to get where they were expected to go?

porcello struggled??

for someone that never pitched above A ball and is 20 years old and has a 4.00 ERA in the AL!!!!!! that is doesnt sound like someone who struggled…

FIP and tRA

Mr. Sickles, do you pay attention or give much credence to FIP and tRA when evaluating players? This is something that I have been wondering for a while (same for wOBA when it comes to hitters). You are a very progressive thinking baseball analyst/scout/thing so it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if you do, but I also realize that these are very new statistics and they often take a lot longer to catch on with the professionals than with the amateurs like Kinslerhomer and myself.

3.83 is his 2008 A+ FIP

Fangraphs has him at 4.81 for the year. He had a slightly better year than Cahill, and both had slightly high HR/FB rates (Cahill: 13.2%; Porcello: 13.9%). I don’t think it’d be wise to get too down on either of them.

Chris Coghlan

Coming into the season you ranked him 9th in the Marlins farm system at a B- grade. Your comment on him was “Nice steady contact hitter, won’t be a star but should have a long career”.

I would be curious to see a rookie review and your projection on him going forward considering he should finish top 3 in the NL ROY.

Thanks.

Id love to see a write up on Latos and Holland

Garrett Jones

Garrett Jones or Delwyn Young. Both nice pick ups off others scrap pile for Pittsburgh.

Dan Hudson

Went from A ball to the Majors in one season. I’d also like to see Alex Avila.

Colby Rasmus

Also Dan Hudson, if he is considered a rookie.

Kris Medlen

Hanson is the obvious one for the Braves staff, but Medlen looked decent in his 60ish innings, too

Agreed on Medlen.

I think Rzepczynski & Happ would be interesting as well. Flashes in the pan or legit MLB starters?

Brad Bergesen

He probably over-performed in comparison to projections more than anyone.

Casey McGehee

You’re not going to get less heralded than Casey McGehee. He came out of nowhere and hit .301/.360/.499 with 16 homers for the season, most of that after taking over second base following Rickie Weeks’ season ending injury.

by jwaltz on Oct 6, 2009 10:06 AM EDT reply actions

As a Brewers fan

I would like to see one done on McGehee as well.

Ryan Perry or Alex Avila would be nice please

Blue Jays trio...

Romero, Rzepczynski, and Cecil.

All three will likely have rotation spots next year. What should we expect?

by PissedMick on Oct 6, 2009 7:01 PM EDT reply actions

I would like to see one on Fowler

Many UZR people thought his defense was awful while other systems thought it was average, good, and from my eyes he seemed to be a natural in center. Is it because of Coors gigantic outfield?

Impossible not to have positive thoughts.

I want Sam Deduno to pitch already.
