where is the cutoff for giving up a first round pick if you sign a type A free agent

does texas give up their first rounder if they sign a Type A?

what about the Cubs?

The first 16 are protected.

Usually it’s the first 15, but the Rangers’ #15 overall pick is a compensation pick for not signing Matt Purke, so it’s really pick 14(a). So up through the Cubs at #16.

Andy

Have you thought about forwarding the link to the draft order to MLBTR instead of them using ESPN insiders draft order link?

Easy pub for you, much more user friendly version for everyone to see…

You can if you want.

I was just posting it on here for discussion, but you’re free to pass along any link of mine you want to.

The only difference is the Rays' compensation pick.

And since they’re at 30(a), they’re going to slide in at #31. I don’t know why he has them at 28(a). They didn’t pick at #28 this year. If he’s using the (a) scenario from the 2009 draft to say that Tampa Bay actually picked at #28, with Washington and New York having (a) picks, then Texas would actually be 13(a). He’s kind of contradicting himself.

Angels could possibly pick up 2 or 3 additional pics in the first round.

Lackey, Abreu, and I think Figgins are all type A’s.

First we had a Salmon and now we have a Trout, let's see the same results.

Gotta offer arb.

Don’t think Guerrero would turn down something in the mid-teens for a year…

guerrero would accept Arb in a heartbeat

and laugh while he makes another 15 mill for 1 year while abreu makes 5 mill

Valverde should be a no-brainer and if they don’t resign Hawkins I think he’s worth the risk too. But, he may have learned from Juan Cruz last season since he’s a Type A and accept arbitration – the way he’s played for Houston, though, he’d be a welcomed holdover, especially with Valverde gone. I don’t see how Tejada is offered it, he’d accept for 10+ million easy.

o dog

should the dodgers offer him arb??

his base salary is 3.5 but made over 8 mill in total with incentives…. what would the arbitor give him for 1 year? so does he get a raise from his 3.5 mill base salary or his total of 8 mill??

i think they should offer arb and if he accepts, get him back for 1 more year happily and if he doesnt accept, take the picks happily…. win win situation for the dodgers..

by matthewmafa on Oct 4, 2009 11:54 PM EDT reply actions

It's based on total salary.

So every conversation would start at $8 million and go up from there.

ohhh

damn then the dodgers might have to think twice before they offer arb cause they might be on the hook for 10 mill if he accepts

The arbitrator and MLB revenues

Revenues are down roughly 6% (supposedly, though believeable given the economy/attendance figures) and could be worse next year, does the arbitrator take this into account or is it just business as usual as if it were 1995-2007 because the CBA doesn’t allow these types of adjustments?

by two fishsticks on Oct 5, 2009 1:08 AM EDT reply actions

I believe it is business as usual.

The Arbitor gets to pick between the team’s offer or the players. Keep in mind that these cases happen after most of the FAs sign over the winter. If FA salaries are depressed again a player might price himself too high and the arbitor would choose the team’s lower salary.

Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year

Players havet to accept arbitration

before they get to to talk to any other teams….. so basically a player has to believe they cant do better then 1 year of whatever they expect for arb in order to accept… I think the past few years only like 2 or 3 pending free agents have accepted arb.

Its very rare that you would make more money in arb then on the free market… last year was one of those very rare years… i doubt it will be like that again.

Woohoo 6th pick.

Hopefully we can make something out of it.

Anyone have any idea on who might be selected in that spot and how good they’ll be?
