Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Community List - Blue Jays

Another really weird system. No real stand out players, and I'm really curious what people think. To be honest I could barely think of anyone off the top of my head. My list is probably way off, and any suggestions would be great. This is mostly based off my statistical analysis and past scouting reports. 130 AB/50 IP

1. Zach Stewart

2. Chad Jenkins

3. Moises Sierra

4. Carlos Perez

5. Henderson Alvarez

Yohermyn Chavez, Eric Thames, Pastornicky, Dopirak, Marisnick, and Collins are some other names.

What a weak system now.....

top 5

1. Zachary Stewart (what the hell were the Reds thinking? )
2. Chad Jenkins
3. Moises Sierra
4. Eric Thames ( I like blood-related prospects)
5. Brad Emaus

H.M. Carlos Perez, Josh Reinecke

what happened to the corner-infield prospect?….name escapes me..

Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?
I tend to think so

Kevin Ahrens?

It looks like he may be holding the wrong end of the bat.

If they would have signed a few more draft picks like...

Barret and Paxton this would be a much stronger farm system.

by joegonzo on Oct 3, 2009 8:59 PM EDT reply actions

Paxton

Ugh. My least favorite non-signing of the draft. I picked him in the draft portion of one of my leagues. I expected him to sign, dominate SS or A ball, then be #1 prospect for the Jays.

Failing to sign Paxton and Eliopoulos were incredible failures

Whoever was reluctant to go over slot, the F.O. or G.M., really failed the team. Having two top CANADIAN prospects would of been great just from a PR perspective, something the Jays really need right now in terms of attendence and in the media. Also, missing out on Barret really destroyed a potentially impressive draft.

Weak system

1. Zach Stewart
2. Chad Jenkins
3. Moises Sierra
4. Eric Thames
5. Josh Roenicke

Hard for me to think w/o looking system by system, but this might be very close to the bottom. W/o the mindless Rolen trade (from the Reds’ prespective), this system would be nothing. Move everyone up one and 4 and 5 would be Emaus and Perez.

I’m quite interested in tracking Carlos Perez, but I don’t think he’s far enough along yet to be considered top 5 in the system.

It's weak, but....

in fairness to the Jays, they did graduate a lot of talent this year- Travis Snider, Ricky Romero, Mark Rzepckynski, Brad Mills, Brett Cecil, and Scott Richmond. So while their system is weak right now, they do have a good amount of young talent.

Brad Mills

didn’t pitch enough to graduate, did he??

David Cooper still belongs in his conversation as well. Yes, he had an uninspiring first full pro season but he started out at AA, how many other 2008 draftees started out that high? Yeah, it worked for a few (Beckham, Smoak, Wallace), but most of the college guys (Alvarez, Matusz, Posey, Alonso, Davis, Weeks, Castro) started at A+, succeeded there and THEN they moved up.

Cooper instead started right at AA, struggled, then started to show improvements (was solid, yet unspectacular, from June onward). He was pushed too fast, I think there is no question about it, but still minorleaguesplits’ adjusted #’s for him would be an OPS of 806 on the season anyway, which is not THAT awful everything considered.

I’d have Cooper 5th at the lowest, in part b/c it’s too early to write him off and in part b/c I’m just not that high on guys like Chavez/Sierra, but I hope I’m wrong about them.

+1

ahh yes, David Cooper was whom I was referring too above.

I believe he is certainly a top 10 ’spect in the Jays system.

I really like Jenkins profile even though I am conservative with recent draftees

1.Jenkins
2.Stewart
3.Alvarez
4.Pastornicky
5.Chavez

Sierra is very intersting, but I am skeptical of his numbers surviving AA very well. I love Pastornicky in that he is very polished for a player his age. I have plenty of faith in him and Tolisano doing well but I want to see them preform at AA before I see their value jump.

For sleeper, Danny Farquar and Darin Mastroainni are two interesting subjects now that Collins has become a know quantity. Farquar has the numbers and stuff of a potential relief ace but is lacking the command for now. Mastroainni was an unheralded draftee in the 16th round in 2007. However, this year he has shown off excellent speed and a great ability to get on base at A+ (.425) and in AA (.370) this year.

The Jays really need to hope some of their large 2007 prep and college draft class works out. There are plenty of young players with excellent potential but raw skills in their low minors; Fuenamayor, Antonio Jimenez, Kenny Wilson, Ahrens, Tolisano, Justin Jackson, Pastornicky, Sierra, Chavez, McDade, Marcus Brisker, John Talley.

Nobody likes Tim Collins?

13.5 K/9 across two levels and very young. LHP is smaller than Lincecum and just a reliever, but a very good one.

Alex Anthopoulis

….the new GM, was quoted earlier this season as saying Alvarez might be their top prospect.

He’s got a ML changeup already and a 96mph fastball. He’s 20 and still learning to pitch, but missed more and more bats as the season progressed.

Off the top of my head, I’d say:

1. Zach Stewart
2. Henderson Alvarez
3. Chad Jenkins
4. David Cooper
5. Moises Sierra
