Gave up another run in the second
Got Dustin Ackley swinging on a curveball. 1 beats 2 on at least this occasion.

He needs time in the minors
He will have a hard time in the Majors IMO if rushed.
by Bravesin07 on Oct 22, 2009 4:20 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He would be fine in the majors
Depending on the expectations you have.
If you expect him to have an FIP of 3.50 you aren’t going to be happy. And he will be looked at as having a hard time. But he will be above replacement level in his first season and probably beat 5.37 FIP that replacement level was in 2008 for NL SP

He's having a bad day. But you have to also account for the fact that this is essentially
the equivalent of early March for him. He’s had 5 months off from pitching competitively. Most people playing in this league have had at most a month and probably less than that when accounting for team instructional leagues.

I could see him...
having an ERA in the low 4s and having a 8+ K/9. He will get a lot of swings and misses and will dominate at times, but he still has stuff to learn. I think his rookie year will be slightly better than Tim Lincecum’s was.
by joegonzo on Oct 22, 2009 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Tim Lincecum had a FIP of 3.63 his rookie year.
He was fantastic. I could definitely see him being better than that, even quite a bit better than that. He’s one of the 5 most talented pitchers on earth today. But he could just as easily be a slightly above league average starter and not come close to being that good.

tim lincecum at least had some time to develop in the minors
i see no way strasburg succeeds like lincecum if he gets NO time in the minors…

RE:
First, I wasn’t saying he would be replacement level. I am saying that if your expectations are for him to be in top 20 SP in baseball, you are probably going to be let down in his rookie year without any minor league experience.
Second, talent doesn’t = success.
Third, Lincecum is the exception, not the rule.

Desme with another HR.
"Carter's 25-game hitting streak isn't any normal streak. He's 46 for 97 (.474 average) during the run, adding 16 walks and compiling 81 total bases in the process. I'm out of superlatives for what he's doing." - Kevin Goldstein

94-98 mph Curve????
damn whats his fastball clocked at???
by PHGold09 on Oct 23, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Haha!... KG had this
In his first three outings, Scheppers has faced 16 batters and retired 14 of them, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out six. As good of reviews as his 95-98 mph fastball obviously generate, his breaking ball is earning nearly equal raves. It’s a true power curveball with heavy top-to-bottom action that he delivers at 80-84 mph, the kind of velocity some pitchers have on their slider. Few pitchers in the game need the ol’ ‘if he can stay healthy’ mantra in front of any projection, but if he can stay healthy, he could be elite.

Rangers homer question alert
Is there anyway at all that with a poor performance in the AFL, Feliz could open up the season ahead of Stras as the top pitching prospect in the game?

Well
MiLB has him going to the VZL, so he’ll be facing some ML guys at least. He’s good, but I’d put Strasburg ahead of him even if he blows up.

people need to relax
it’s one game. He will have dominant outings here and he will get shelled too. This is his first time pitching professionally. He will be fine. Barring injury, he will be a stud. The stuff is too good. He needs to adjust, everyone does.

Sure he'll need to adjust to big leaguers
but I’m not sure what he’s doing now is even adjusting. More so getting his feel for pitching back after 5 months off.

As a Strasburg owner in two different leagues
I think he’s just getting his feet wet. Of course, hopefully his feet aren’t getting wet by the same methods as Moises Alou’s hands.

Moises Alou was so gritty, he pissed grit.
He used to wear batting gloves, but the grit gritted right through them.

I am starting to get a little upset I didn’t draft this guy when I could have and now someone else in my league has him. Not to let a few games in the AFL influence me or anything.
