Community Prospect List - Diamondbacks

My apologies. I totally forgot Allen was still eligible. And he makes a pretty big change in lists. So REDO.

On to the D-Backs. Let's just say that if this draft never happened, this would be easily the worst in the league. I have 3 09 draftees in the top 5. And I could have had four. That's how bad this system is. 130 AB, 50 IP

1. Jarrod Parker

2. Allen

3. Borchering

4. Owings

5. Davidson

6. Schlereth

Other names are A.J. Pollock, Helm, Belfiore (yes, three more draftees), Wheeler (another), Cole Gillespie (who I really like), Harden (liked him before this year), Eichhorn, and Nick (yes, another draftee)

Best 09 draft IMO

1) Parker
2) Borchering
3) Davidson
4) Allen
5) Pollock
6) Owings

Allen at 4 might look a bit low, but I see Borchering and Davidson emerging as the 2 best prep bats out of this year’s draft.

Fasho

We got some big time mashers in Borchering and Davidson, then we got a toolsy college guy in Pollock, and lastly we got a true dirtdog a la Dustin Pedroia in Chris Owings.

hard not to

When you have that many high picks and none of them have really even had the opportunity to disappoint yet, it’s obviously going to look really good.

by mrkupe on Oct 21, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but there were

a handful of questionable 1st round picks.

It really looked like the D-Backs truly went with the best available at each selection.

eh

I don’t really see any questionable first rounders . . .the draft was relatively deep but not very strong in terms of individual talent, and lots of guys could have jumped into the first round.

I think the Dbacks did okay for themselves all things considered. Pollock is interesting but has rather serious questions for a first round college bat. Davidson and Borchering are high upside bats but both carry a lot of risk. Owings is just okay . . .he’s got good makeup but his tools are pretty average and he’s probably not a shortstop long-term. He reminds a lot of Charlie Culberson, another signability overdraft who hasn’t done much at all.

by mrkupe on Oct 22, 2009 3:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

pollock

profiles as a 4th ofer and was obviously a signability pick after borchering

by ScottAZ on Oct 23, 2009 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pollock...

has good tools.I could see him becoming an Eric Byrnes type player or at least the type of player Byrnes used to be.

by joegonzo on Oct 24, 2009 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Byrnes.....

so again, a solid 4th OFer (which is all Byrnes really is)

You don’t spend the 17th pick of the draft on a kid that profiles as a solid 4th Ofer.

by ScottAZ on Oct 26, 2009 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Byrnesie ain't no 4th OF.

A 5th then?

He certainly isn’t a starting LFer with a career line of 260/321/442.

And back to the original point, you don’t draft a guy that “could” turn into Eric Byrnes with the 17th pick of the draft

by ScottAZ on Oct 26, 2009 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm pretty sure that D-Backs view his ceiling as more than a 4th OF.

I personally was sickened by the Red Sox 1st round pick of Reymond Fuentes, but they must view him more highly than that of the majority of Red Cox fans.

byrnes

I would say his ceiling has been pretty much established at this point since he’s about to turn 34.

With the combined line of 213/271/380 he has produced the past two years its easy to see he is on the down side of a mediocre career. Outside of 2004 and 2007 he has never produced a season with an ops of over 800, and that goes back to 2000.

Fuentes looked like a reach, but if I were a Red Sox fan I would have more faith in Theo’s deicisions than what most Dback fans have felt towards our upper management since Colangelo left. And also at least Fuentes has a somewhat high ceiling, Pollock profiles a skillset of a 4th OFer

Diamond Backs

This system isn’t all that bad it might be in the middle 1/3 of the league…maybe

top 5

1. Jarrod Parker
2. Bobby Borchering
3. Brandon Allen
4. AJ Pollack
5. Daniel Schlereth

H.M. Wheeler, Owings, Eichorn, Davidson, Gillispie, Kevin Mulvey -does he qualify?

Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?
I tend to think so

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Oct 20, 2009 10:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Didn't know one could delete a post

then again, i haven’t bothered to write one yet.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on Schlereth at #6 over Pollack, Gillispie, Harden since I wasn’t able to read your response if you had written one. Does Schlereth really have multiple years as a closer type ceiling because I certainly don’t see it?

As a reminder my list was:

1. Parker
2. Borchering
3. Allen
4. Harden
5. Pollack

by two fishsticks on Oct 20, 2009 10:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Schlereth

He flat out dominated the minors this year. He has very good stuff and seems to be a closer. At the very least, a dominating setup man.

I’m not a fan at all, but Pollack does not impress me at all. Gillespie I’m a fan of, but seems to be a very good fourth outfielder from what I heard. Harden’s low K rate this year really disappointed me.

Re-Post

1: Parker is still a stud at the top if healthy.

2: Borchering has huge power, but is much more dangerous from the left side of the plate then the right. Also questions on him sticking at third.

After those two, throw em in a hat.

So much improved from Last season!

1. Parker
2. Borchering
3. Allen
4. Davidson
5. Pollock

dbacks have many guys from 09 draft in the top 5

would they be in the top 5 of other teams or are they only there cause their system is that weak.?

by matthewmafa on Oct 21, 2009 2:08 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

A bit of each

Dbacks system ranked #26 last year by BA. But then they had 5 picks in the top 50 this draft (due to supplemental picks for Hudson/Cruz/Lyon). I’d say most of these guys would be top 10 for most systems, but the top 5 is still a bit weak here. It’s just hard to be sure with teenagers in rookie ball. In another 2 years, some of those same names might look like a very good top 5.

by acerimusdux on Oct 21, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

1. Jarrod Parker
2. Bobby Borchering
3. Brandon Allen
4. AJ Pollock
5. Matt Davidson

6. Marc Krauss

I wanted to put Krauss in the top 5, but I just couldn’t justify putting him ahead of Davidson.

by jar75 on Oct 21, 2009 9:16 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'd personally bet on Krauss over Davidson.

But if you’re just looking at it from a raw talent level, yeah, Davidson is significantly higher. But I’d bet on Krauss to be the Major Leaguer between the two. Davidson’s got a long, long way to go.

by Andy Seiler on Oct 21, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This system is weird...

you could rank the top 6 or 7 guys anywhere and it would make sense. Parker has injury concerns, Borchering and Davidson are very raw, and Brandon Allen just isn’t that big of a prospect. I would go

Parker
Allen
Borchering
Davidson
Pollock
I also love their draft this year. Got a good combination of upside and college players with high floors.

by joegonzo on Oct 21, 2009 4:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

not sold on pollock

in hindsight he looks like a reach to me. he doesn’t have much power, doesn’t have burner speed, has a weak arm, and is not considered a very good CFer. His only strengths are his ability to put his bat on the ball, a good eye, and above ave speed.

so we spent a 1st round pick on a guy that profiles as a 4th OFer

wasn’t there talk of him moving to 2B or is that dead now?

Draft guru in training.

by tj.hendricks on Oct 21, 2009 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

2b

he played 2b at Notre Dame his 1st two years there, moved to CF in Cape Cod 2008 and has been there since. The Dbacks plan on keeping him in the OF for now, but he was so bad in CF that he split time between there and LF in A ball.

From what I’ve heard on Dbacksinsider is he is terrible in CF. He has above ave speed (not burner), but has no instincts and a well below ave arm.

by ScottAZ on Oct 23, 2009 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

For all the buzz pre-draft about Pollock as a polished bat, I dreaded the idea of the Cubs drafting him. Guys with his skillset can be found later in the draft. Now, maybe he pans out, but for me, Pollock isn’t significantly more talented than say, a Sam Fuld or a Brett Gardner. Just didn’t see the point of drafting him in the first round.

by toonsterwu on Oct 21, 2009 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

think I'd rather have Gardner

at least he has 70 speed, Pollock is 60-65 speed.

If they were set on a toolsie college OFer they should have taken Jared Mitchell from LSU. Mitchell has elite speed, solid power, playable arm, and is a solid defender.

Thats not too mention all of the arms that were still available at #17- Gibson, Miller, etc

Only thing I can think of is they wanted to save some money at that spot knowing they would have to spend to sign Borchering

by ScottAZ on Oct 23, 2009 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

1. Parker
2. Allen
3. Borchering
4. Davidson
5. Pollock

by jarjets89 on Oct 21, 2009 6:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

My official picks are

1. Jerrod Parker
2. Bobby Borchering
3. Brandon Allen
4. Daniel Schlereth
5. Ryan Wheeler

I actually want to put Borchering at #1, but considering his limited (and reatively poor) time in pro ball, I will make the more conservative choice. I’m also tempted to move Schlereth up.

The wind is in the buffalo.

I was operating under the assumption that he would need TJ surgery anyway. I still think he’s the best prospect in this system.

Mine

1. Jerrod Parker
2. Brandon Allen
3. Bobby Borchering
4. Ryan Wheeler
5. Matt Davidson

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

by WayneCampbell08 on Oct 22, 2009 10:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Mine

1. Parker (even with the TJ, even though the timing is late)
2. Allen
3. Schelereth
4. Miley (still like him)
5. Borchering

6-10 (in no order): Pollock, Gillespie, Davidson, Wheeler, Cowgill

Still a weak system
