Rule 5 moves

Who are some of the bigger name guys/top prospects who teams will be forced to put on the 40 man rosters come the Rule 5 draft?  I know it's signed at 18, in sysytem for 5 years, or signed at 19, in system for 4 years.  I am not sure of a good place to look up exactly when contracts were signed, so some guys it's tough for.

As a start, I believe that both Jeremy Hellickson and Desmond Jennings will have to be put on the Rays 40 man to protect them.  It looks like maybe Logan Morrison might have to be protected as well.  Who else can you think of?

Cubs

AzPhil of TCR does a good job of keeping folks on track with his list. It can be seen on www.thecubreporter.com in the right side panel.

3 Guys that I hope are kept (in order):

Welington Castillo – Still think he’s a bit underrated. Cubs could put him as the 3rd catcher. I’ve compared him to Bengie Molina before. Defense improved according to some, and his offense got better in the 2nd half, after being a bit unlucky in the first half. If Soto doesn’t bounce back, Castillo could fight for PT come 2011.

John Gaub – Lefty in the DeRosa trade tore through the minors. That said, with the Cubs likely to resign John Grabow (according to reports), and with Marshall/Gorzelanny, Gaub isn’t as significant as before. Still … good depth to have that could help save some money.

Blake Parker – Former catcher with a good low-mid 90’s fastball and a solid slider. Some control issues, but imo, has some setup potential.

Two guys I hope are kept:

Rafael Dolis – I wasn’t leaning this way earlier in the year, but he’s supposedly looked sharper in instructs (according to AzPhil) with his secondary stuff, and he was always a hard throwing big dude. Worth the risk.

Alessandro Maestri – Was leaning Maestri as a borderline must keep, but Dolis has a higher upside, and while Maestri has a better slider than Parker, they are similar and Parker probably has a better fastball and is a bit more developed. That said, if we can keep 5 around, sure, would love him.

Others (random order):

Jeremy Papelbon/Jayson Ruhlman – Earlier in the year, I was somewhat leaning towards hoping that Papelbon was staying due to the Cubs lefty pen issue. But with Grabow likely to return and Gaub’s development, neither of these guys are that important anymore, and it’s doubtful that both would get picked.

James Adduci – Somewhat similar to Sam Fuld, he produces, but unlike a guy like Fuld, is probably not as well-rounded to be anything more than a depth OF (whereas Fuld has a really borderline shot of being a regular … but still a bit more chance than Adduci, IMO)

Chris Robinson/Steve Clevenger – Potentially decent cheap backup catchers for some team. The former’s a bit better defensively, the latter is iffy defensively but has a solid enough bat. That said, Castillo should be ahead.

Greg Reinhard – Arm the Cubs got in the Jae-Kuk Ryu deal (along with OF Andrew Lopez) had a decent season out of the pen. Average stuff, IIRC, so losing him won’t hurt, but could perhaps be a cheap 12th arm for some team that eventually gets stashed.

Robert Hernandez – So frustrating. Two years ago, he was a really young arm that was succeeding in low A with a solid fastball good changeup. PED suspension and 2 years later, he’ll likely start 2011 in Peoria or Daytona still looking to step forward. I’d love to have him around, but he’s not important enough to protect right now.

Thomas Diamond – Signed with the Cubs due to his former coach in college being in the org as Asst. GM I think. If we can, so be it, but there’s enough arms to ponder that he shouldn’t rank high.

Matt Camp – Will never be more than a 13th or 14th man, but he has played almost everywhere.

Diamond

I could be wrong but i don’t think he is rule 5 eligible. He was on the 40 man roster this season and ran through waivers. I believe that precludes him from rule 5 eligibility. I could be wrong however

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Rockies

The Rockies will have, most likely, three or four available spots on the 40-man roster, depending on what they do with Yorvit Torrealba’s option (the Rockies might try to bring him back at less than the $4 million they owe him on the option) and whether or not they let go of some of the fungible players on the roster.

It depends on how many open spots are on the 40-man, obviously. Two players the Rockies will almost certainly look to protect are Chaz Roe (too much invested in him) and Michael McKenry (too much potential not to protect him.) Will Harris is an interesting relief prospect, but after pitching only one inning in 2009 due to injuries, the Rockies might chance it. Cole Garner has been Rule 5-eligible for a couple of years, I think, but then this is the first year the Rockies will consider protecting him. Daniel Mayora is eligible but looks more like a utility man at this point, and the Rockies are fairly deep in minor league middle infielders and set there at the major league level.

One interesting guy is Scott Beerer, originally drafted as a pitcher in 2003, converted to hitting this season and tore up the Cal League in the second half. The Rockies might not bother protecting him on the 40-man, but has obvious talent.

Yankees

I thought we were looking at specific players like top50s, but I’ll give my team analysis.
Yankees have a ton of roster spots opening. Hairston, Bruney, Hinske, and Matsui are unlikely to be resigned. Nady is in that category too, but he doesn’t have a roster spot. Josh Towers, Sergio Mitre, Jon Albaladejo, Edwar Ramirez, Shelley Duncan, Freddy Guzman and possibly Chad Gaudin can be DFAd. (I say Gaudin b/c of all the relief pitching surplus)
Possible DFAs also include Damaso Marte (anyone want him!) and Chris Garcia. Andrew Brackman is a longshot at a DFA. We may also want to look at the status of Melky Cabrera and Juan Miranda. Wang may be non-tendered.
Our team has a couple of obvious protections. The first one is Austin Jackson. The second is Ivan Nova. The third is Ed Nunez. The fourth (which I am against because he can’t hit in AAA) is Reegie Corona. The fifth is Kanekoa Texeira. The sixth is Kevin Russo.
Then we get into the questionable category. Two players we put in the AFL are here. Colin Curtis and Grant Duff. Colin Curtis is looking like a very good 4th OF and Grant Duff is a reliever who throws 99 mph. He didn’t come on until late in the season. The Yankees may consider protecting Lance Pendleton (strikeout starting pitcher), Jon Hovis (decent reliever), Tim Norton (overpowering, but injury prone reliever), Zach Kroenke (very good lefty), Romulo Sanchez (starter or reliever from trade w/ Pirates. Throws upper 90s), Josh Schmidt (side armed reliever), Chris Malec (organizational corner IF. I am against him, but he keeps succeeding), Kevin Whelan (very good reliever. Wildness had gone away), George Kontos (TJS in May I believe) and Humberto Sanchez (transition to reliever has gone pretty well)
Now that is a lot of players. You have the 6 definites. On top of that, I put Whelan, Kroenke, Pendleton, Hovis, and Humberto Sanchez. If Chris Garcia is taken off, I would put Kontos on. Tim Norton is a little old and injury prone to be protected. Malec and Romulo Sanchez are likely to be taken. Schmidt may or may not be taken. Those 12 would take enough spots. Then you have someone to sign to replace Matsui. There is still enoguh room for Marte/Gaudin, Miranda, Melky Cabrera, a Matsui replacement (possibly Melky, Miranda, or Austin Jackson so a FA at a different position can be signed) and Andrew Brackman.

Yankee Thoughts

I agree with some of your thoughts here, but certainly not all of them. Andrew Brackman isn’t even a consideration for DFA, nor is Damaso Marten (would be traded before that happened). I don’t believe Chris Garcia is either, but he at least is possible. Gaudin, Albaladejo, Ramirez and Bruney are all still under Yankees control and would be traded before just being released.

When looking at the roster you realize it is really a 42 man roster, as we have 2 players on the 60-day DL to consider. Then you have a definite list of players that are free agents – Damon, Nady, Matsui, Hinske, Hairston, Molina, Pettitte, Towers, Mitre. That guarantees 7 openings, though some may need to be kept in case they decide to sign them again. Guzman, Miranda and Duncan all likely have seen the end of their time as Yankees as well, though Guzman has one tool (speed) that could keep him around, though maybe as a Minor League FA. That gets us up to 10 openings. Add Wang to the list and that makes 11 (I really believe he will be back with the Yankees, but on an agreed to in advance minor league deal. With the guys like Albaladejo and Ramirez, both are out of options (I believe) so they either make the team or get let go, so those 2 are place-holders (and with the depth of the bullpen arms, not likely to stick for very long). That makes 13 spots. I am guessing 3 of the free agents will be back on the 40-man roster (Matsui, Pettitte and Hairston are my guesses, but Damon wouldn’t surprise me). That leave 10 spots to play with.

Some guaranteed guys are Austin Jackson, Ivan Nova, Eduardo Nunez and George Kontos (though he may be OK since he had TJ surgery). The other 6-7 spots (depending on Kontos) could go a number of ways. Kevin Russo is also likely. I like Romulo Sanchez (98 MPH fastball is tough to teach). Kevin Whalen is showing better, though another reliever. Reegie Corona is a nice player, though I don’t think he sticks with another team either.

There are a decent amount of options to fill out the roster and I wouldn’t rule out a deal of 2 prospects for 1 to allow for further options/flexibility.

Wow man

You basically hit every single point I was gonna.

The only guys that I consider adding the roster are:
Austin Jackson
Ivan Nova
Kanekoa Tex
Reegie Corona
Eduardo Nunez
Grant Duff
Zack Kroenke
Romulo Sanchez
Jason Hirsh
Josh Schmidt
Humberto Sanchez
George Kontos
Kevin Russo
Kevin Whelan

Kontos had TJ so he won’t be added. I definitely do not add Pendleton, Norton, Hovis, Malec, etc. Jackson and Nova are locks. The most important guys besides those to get on are Russo, Nunez, Corona, Kroenke, and Romulo Sanchez.

Man, this is going to be a tough offseason.

Guys that will likely be off the 40 man this offseason:
-Chris Garcia: he had ANOTHER major surgery
-Freddy Guzman
-Josh Towers
-Shelley Duncan
-Edwar Ramirez
-Sergio Mitre
-Jose Molina will be let go for Cervelli
-Probably one of Hairston/Hinske will be re-signed.

Kontos

I read on wikipedia that he can be kept on 60 day DL until he is ready so that worries me. They just need 90 days and if they don’t reach that they continue the following season. Also Hirsh I wouldn’t consider really. Albaladejo is ehh. He might be traded for like a PTBNL or cash.

Rangers

Might add: Zach Phillips and Michael Kirkman. Doubtful: Chad Tracy, Beau Jones, Johnny Whittleman.

The 2009 Texas Rangers offense: sigh...
