AFL - Day Three
Three more games today, with two on this afternoon. Of note, Mike Leake takes the mound in his minor league debut. I confess I don't know much about him, but maybe Reds fans can fill us in on things to watch with him.
Some notable performances from yesterday include the following:
Dustin Ackley 2-4, run
Cole Gillespie 3-3, 2BB, RBI
Josh Vitters 3-4, double
Dom Brown 2-5, 2doubles
Jenrry Meijia, 1 IP 3ER only 21 of 39 for strikes
Donnie Veal, 2IP's 3K's
What are some of your impressions for the first couple days? Has anyone seen any of the games, would be interested to hear the observations? Post away.

Mike Leake
Above average to plus control is his main calling card. His fastball isn’t going to blow guys away, but its an 88-92 MPH (tops out around 94) sinker that is supposed to induce lots of groundballs. Above average change and above average slider. Also throws a curveball that is average.
I am more concerned with how his stuff looks at its best in the AFL than the overall results. He didn’t throw from June-Mid October in a competitive environment. As long as he stays healthy, this Reds fan will be fine with the results no matter what they are.

any comparables for him?
sounds like a good #3 guy, maybe even a #2, if all works out.

The two comps I have seen
were Tim Hudson and David Cone.

His slider isn't comparable to Cone's.
But then again, it’s hard to find one that is.

Hudson
would be a decent comp. I watched Leake at Arizona St the past few years and his strrengths would be his control and athleticism. He was probably our best SS at ASU but didn’t play much two ways because the arm was too valuable. (Hudson was a two way player as well).
I don’t see much Cone in him, as Cone had way filthier stuff. Cone had one of the top sliders of all time and (early in his career) an explosive fastball in the 95-96mph range.
Leake sits mainly around 88-91mph but has good control over his slider and change and will mix a curve in once and a while.

Those are some very odd comps.
Hudson and Cone…
So he’s either a hard sinker throwing ground ball machine or a guy with insane movement on his fastball, curve, and slider strikeout guy.
Fans are typically idiots.

your boy Iglesias
goes deep. seems like he’s putting some of the doubts about his bat to rest.

Fasho mang.
Let’s see if he keeps it up.
Things are looking on the up and up that The Brujo is going to start next year in AA at 20 years old.
He just got HBP’d, because the Suprise team couldn’t handle his effervescent, divine presence.

LOL...Yes, you're right, they couldn't
I need to mention that Josh Stinson, the pitcher who gave up the home run, has allowed 1 HR in 78.2 IP this year!
I didn’t want to get too exited about his hitting but the boy is not helping me: If he keeps hitting, I think he’ll get invited to spring training (Imagine the same player going to Instructional League and ST in 6 months span: Crazy) and start the season at Pawtucket.
"That was a lot of fun… You just keep pounding balls into the gap. The one thing you don’t want to do is hit a home run. That’s a rally-killer." Jeff Francoeur

If Hudson
is the high side, i’m sure the Reds would feel pretty happy about the pick. I thought he was considered a bit of a reach there, maybe for signability reasons. Thought they really liked Crow and was surprised they didn’t take him.

Big Day for Mighty Moose
good to see him performing, RBI double yesterday and HR, Doulbe and 5 Rbi’s so far today. Go Moose.

Taking Alonso and Leake the last 2 yrs could make or break their scouting dept, especially when some might consider them abit overdrafts when there were just as good or better players on the board. Add in another top 10 pick in stubbs a couple yrs ago and pressure on them to produce

Just about everyone
takes a player when a better player is on the board in the long run. As for taking Alonso and being an overdraft…. He is going to be one of the Top 20 prospects in baseball at the end of this year. Hard to suggest that he was an overdraft.

Not so sure he's top 20,
but I understand what you’re saying.
I think he’s more like #30, but I’m really just splitting hairs.

Baseball America
Had him in the Top 15 at midseason (#15).

That list was a tad fishy, though.
See placement of Castro and Freeman.

Alonso
Was number 20 in project prospects 9/1/2009 ranking of position players (so lower than that overall). He was 52 overall in one list at year end (with several 1Bs ahead of him). He was ok this year. Injured. He still has star potential.

Smoak
In retrospect yes, everyone misses on guys.
But even at the time, taking Alonso over Smoak was a mistake. There was no reason why he should not have been the first 1B off the board. Texas got a steal there.
Alonso needs to learn how to hit LHP before I declare him even a top 50 prospect. He’s got bust written all over him IMO.

high fives for Royals fans
People have been pretty down on him this year so if he lost any confidence, then a strong performance in the AFL might regain it. Also, if he handles himself well with some of the better talent here, hopefully it will lead to a breakout in AA next season. Here’s hoping.

Gutierrez
3 IPs 0er’s 2bb’s 2k’s
Thought it was a bad deal at the time and he is continuing to perform at higher levels. I don’t think he’s going to be a star, but he should be a serviceable arm so Rangers fans must like the return in that one.
by MightyMoose on Oct 15, 2009 5:26 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yep
and if he can get his change to average fringe average then I think he could be a solid #2 great #3. I think Tim Smith is going to be a nice player too.
The 2009 Texas Rangers offense: sigh...

Connor Graham
He must be hurt, or something. No control, and his velocity was way down. Very sad, I really liked him.
