Pick an Amateur SP = Aroldis, Ynoa, Cole
Okay. These are 3 high ceiling amateur SPs. Lotto tickets if you will. Garret Cole looks like the top SP prospect in the 2011 draft, although a lot can go wrong and change between now and thin. Aroldis has an otherworldly FB for a young lefty (Cubans who have played in international tournaments usually have a kosher age), although nothing elite after than. Ynoa took the 2009 season off essentially, still should have the same ceiling that he had a year ago but I guess the elbow concerns lower his floor.
Which would you think has a better MLB career and why?

My innate loyalty to Ynoa's eyes
make me vote for him no question.
Also Gerrit Cole is a jerk.

Wait, seriously?
How is Chapman not running away with this? There was talk that he’s the best non-Strasburg prospect in the game at points this year. I have yet to see a respected Top 100 list that includes Ynoa.

Cole had 2 plus pitches
at 17 years-old, and could touch 98.
I’ll go with him, I suppose.

he should not be in this poll. he’s not an amateur.

Of course, the amateurs have actually all, you know, pitched more
Technically not an amateur, but in practice he pretty much is.

Gerrit Cole...
is the only one of the three who won’t have the huge learning curve of learning how to play in America with teammates who may not speak the same language as you. He also has an amzing fastball and a very good curve. If he develops a change, he will be on almost the same level as Strasburg. Chapman has supposedly hit 100 mph with his fastball, but is still very raw and has huge bust potential. Ynoa, should not even be considered in my opinion. He is the most raw, has the worst stuff right now, has an injury history already, and has the most bust potential. I don’t even see his ceiling being as high as Cole’s or Chapman’s.

Cole
Chapman was close, but we know a bit more about Cole so I gave him the slight edge. Ynoa didn’t even get my consideration. Chapman and Cole would be slam dunk top 25 prospects while I’m not sure if I’d even put Ynoa in a top 200 list.

Cole
Gotta go with what you know. Cole’s the clear-cut #1 guy for 2011, and that puts him in a top ten prospect status for me.

Why is...
Cole in last place in the poll, but is getting the most love in the comments. People voting for Chapman and Ynoa need to give reasons. I believe the people voting for Ynoa are just Oakland homers because he doesn’t even compare to Chapman and Cole.

this should be deleted
michael ynoa is not an amateur.

He could change the name...
to pick a pitcher. It doesn’t really matter if he is an amateur or not, he doesn’t deserve to be on this because he is not as good as either pitcher, not because he is not an amateur.

IMO
It should be Gerrit Cole. He has the moat well rounded stuff of any ofthw pitchers inthis list, 2 plus pitches and can probably advance quickly up the minors. Ynoa is very raw, has already shown that he is susceptible to injuries and hasn’t displayed progress yet. Chapman has shown his stuff in the olympics and the WBC and it’s outerworldly for a lefty to have that type of stuff. But he is also quite raw, I hear that he has funky mechanics that might need to get ironed out and he needs to display two other pitches that grade out to average to be an effective starter. He could be a hell of a closer or reliver. I won’t be shocked when the Yanks roll out the red carpet for him.

Chapman
I thought his slider was a borderline plus pitch? He relied heavily on the fastball in the WBC, but the slider looked like a decent pitch from what I remember. He’ll definitely need to get some work in the minors and iron out his control, but I think he could be a very good starting pitcher. Barring injury, his floor is as a late inning reliever. I don’t think you can say that about Ynoa. We just don’t have any idea what he actually looks like yet as a pitcher yet.
I do agree that the answer is Cole though.

Aroldis Chapman
He is obviously destined to be a closer. His first name is an anagram for Rolaids.

Ignore the Amateur Comment
My bad.
Yes, Ynoa is “signed” but has yet to throw a professional inning thus we know no more about him than we do any amateur pitcher.
Very surprised to see Ynoa leading the poll as I thought that this would be a battle between Chapman and Cole.

It has to be...
a bunch of Oakland homers voting for him because there is no way you can justify voting for Ynoa other than to piss people off. You might as well just take ynoa off the poll.

I'm an Oakland homer, and like I've said before
Ynoa isn’t in my Top 20 A’s prospects. Guy is a non-entity until he proves he actually, you know, exists.

one bullpen does not a top prospect make.

Cole
He’s not far from being the new Stephen Strasburg.
by UncleBuck44 on Oct 11, 2009 9:09 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
The difference is that Strasburg came from nowhere in college.
We had a lot less time to pick apart his flaws. Cole was a known entity from his days as a star prep pitcher to now, and he’ll be picked apart a lot more.

There was a full two college seasons plus the Olys for picking apart Strasburg
The reason that there weren’t many flaws found is because there aren’t many there.

The thing about Aroldis
Is that while he can hit 100, I hear he ranges from 90-100. Which is a terrifying prospect in a young pitcher, and suggests a proclivity to injury.

Inoa
this poll is ridiculous in so many ways:
First off the affermentioned fact that Inoa is not a amatuer.
Second, how about the hush-hush already surrounding Inoa’s arm troubles? Lets see, 17 years old and already arm troubles? How could anyone pick a kid that is 3-4 years away from the Show IF everything goes to plan?

3-4 years is probably being generous
He’d have to dominate to move that quickly.

The Poll or the Results are ridiculous?????
I concur that the results are silly as Ynoa should rank 3rd.
Ynoa’s stock is similar to that of a HS pitcher who at 16 was projected to be the #1 overall pick in the 2010 amateur draft back in 2008. Now it is 1 year later and such pitcher did not pitch at all in his Junior season nor during the summer AAU season. While ceiling may be the same, his floor is much lower and he would have to demonstrate full recovery and dominance to work his way back up the charts.
Get over the semantical distinction that Ynoa is not an amateur as he has yet to log 1 professional inning as we speak those he is ~ an amateur for comparative purposes

Ynoa
I voted for him because I expect him to be the best.
It might be a stupid reason why, but I would take a stab that others have the same voting “strategy.”
Being unknown and handled carefully should not diminish his value IMO. If Chapman or Cole throw less innings next year as a precaution then people will be flying off those bandwagons too. There are many A’s fans on this site than have soured impartial fans from their prospects IMO.
The BP article on Chapman scared me off on him.
I always have found BP and BA to have “respected” top 100 lists.
