BA WAS Top 10
The posting is not up online at Baseball America yet, but per the mailed copy of NL East Top 10 Prospects issue ...
- Jordan Zimmermann, RHP
- Ross Detwiler. LHP
- Chris Marrero, 1B
- Michael Burgess, OF
- Jack McGeary, LHP
- Derek Norris, C
- Destin Hood, OF
- Adrian Nieto, C
- J.P. Ramirez, OF
- Esmailyn Gonzalez, SS
There are three players from the 2008 draft (Hood, Nieto, & Ramirez) all crack the top 10 list. This system is without question a work in progress. Still no premium prospects, though Strasburg might change that in 2009.

Detwiler
Kinda shocked he didnt fall a few places because his poor 2008 and his subpar AFL showing. What was the deal last year? injury or the Nats making him work on other stuff/changing mechanics?

Mechanics
The reports were that the Nationals changed his mechanics and that he didn’t get that comfortable with them.
I saw him pitch in person a few times and the thing that stuck out to me was an inability to get guys out after getting ahead in counts. Saw lots of 0-2 counts turn into 7+ pitch at-bats

Detwiler
In November, Joe Sheehan from BP didn’t seem to have much faith in Detwiler:
“Ross Detwiler just doesn’t have enough stuff to be a mid-rotation starter; he’s fringy at best.”

All you ever hear about Martis is that scouts don’t like his stuff. BA rated his changeup as the best in the organization, and I’ve watched his fastball register consistently in the 91-94 range at times, in the Olympics for example. Maybe it doesn’t have good enough movement, or maybe it’s down in the 80s some of the time, I don’t know. His breaking stuff is regarded as mediocre, but I don’t think anyone would say that it’s flat out bad, and for goodness sakes, he was 21 and pitching in AA/AAA/MLB last year. He’s either got a heck of a lot of pitchability (since his numbers haven’t declined despite the quick ascent), or BA’s take on him underrates him. Also, he walked a bunch of guys and gave up several HRs in his MLB stint in September, but I think you have to be impressed with his hit and strikeout rates. In 20.2 IP (four starts and a relief appearance), he gave up 18 hits and struck out 23 (12 BB, 5 HR). That’s really not too bad for a 21 year old going through lineups multiple times in most of those games.

what is a premium prospect?
I’m not trying to give away BA content, but they basically said Zimmerman is a stud in the making, I mean he’s probably top 30 I would assume, possibly even a top 25 or higher, Marrero is also the same guy who was rated ahead of a lot of very highly regarded prospects before he got injured, they have some talent, this could be a big year for several of their guys…granted they are the Nats so who cares
