Pohlad and the future of the Twins...

With the death of Carl Pohlad what do you think that the future of the Twins are?  It sounds as if his sons will take over so they shouldn't have a situation like the Red Sox had in the early 90's with the Yawkey Trust.  Pohlad set a budget every year and during the Terry Ryan era seemed very inflexible even if the team was in contention wouldn't go beyond his budget.  Even so, he had been a cheap owner who had tried to cash in his franchise less than 10 years ago.  Do you think that future ownership will be more likely to go all out during the draft, and become slightly bigger players on the FA market.  Bill Smith is overmatched, but now he may have a little more money to spend

Money

I don’t think the Twins are going to spend any more money any time soon.

Sure their total team payroll will increase slowly over the next 2-3 years but even so. I don’t see them changing their spending habits or changing their FA Targets..

I see it has just a slight boost (hopefully) to pay the young players that they already have in the system as the cost for even an average starting pitcher (#3 type starter) over time is Probably what 4 Million a year now?
12 million over three years?
Mauer is due for an extension probably right NOW!!!
….guys like Slowey, Liriano, Kubel could be next and maybe Ramos down the line could be tagged as a DH/Catcher and locked up long term for rather big bucks…

$4 million?

Try twice that, and that’s just for a guy who’s done it once. If you want consistency, you’re paying $10-$12M a year.

minnesota money

for sports is pretty much non-existant….i would not be surprised one bit to see payroll go up in the new stadium, but fan fickleness in minnesota is horrid….during my time in college, the dome went from nowhere near 10,000 at a rival game to a game i attended when the rays where still a last place club where the attendence was over 30,000…that was in a span of 4 years….the attendance isn’t that good right now, and unless they really make a push deep into the playoffs in the next few weeks, the fans will start falling away much like the fickleness of atlanta fans in the 90s….

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
