i believe i’ve seen a john olerud comp. any others ?

by giantdonkey on Jan 6, 2009 11:10 AM EST reply actions

I was surprised a bit but I believe Callis said in the latest BA chat that Morrison would be behind only Hosmer/Lars in his personal top 100 and that all 3 were top 20.

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/ask-ba/2009/267394.html

12. Hosmer
13. Anderson
14. Morrison
19. Smoak
32. Villalona
39. Alonso

Then he has Alvarez at 3 I believe who some still think will land at 1B. Seems I’ve been undervaluing Morrison for some time.

Thoughts on Blake Brewer and Edgar Olmos

Tow high school pitchers from the 08 draft, Id like to hear some thoughts on these two.

I like Galloway a lot

I was hoping the O’s would take a flyer on him, and I think the Marlins stole him for $245,000. I think he projects as an Aaron Rowand type player.

what kind of question is this

how would he possibly be garbage at this point in his career?

by Future Fish on Jan 6, 2009 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

Well

Brett Sinkbeil went from first rounder to garbage pretty quickly, so he’s probably just having deja vu. But i know what you mean, it’s too early to tell.

Ryan Tucker

Curious to see his grade. B last year and this from John in the Prospect Review in Aug08: " 1.38 ERA with 64/31 K/BB in 78 innings for Carolina, 8.39 ERA with 26/22 K/BB in 34 innings in the majors. Great stuff but command was not ready for the Show."

Gaby Sanchez

Will he be staring 1b this year? What do Marlins fans expect from him and how does his future look? League avg. 1b?

by The Colonel on Jan 6, 2009 7:11 PM EST reply actions

Sanchez

He’ll probably start in the minors. I think Cantu might be moving to 1b

by PhillyPhanatic on Jan 6, 2009 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

Gaby

It’s his job to lose in Spring Training

by Future Fish on Jan 6, 2009 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

by znyfan on Jan 6, 2009 9:02 PM EST reply actions

Chris Volstad

Not eligible for this list (84 IP in the majors), but curious to hear what people think of him. I’ve always rather liked him. Very young with solid secondary pitches, and a sinker that is an absolute thing of beauty. Gave up only three HRs in the majors this year, and one of them was to Aramis Ramirez who went golfing and got lucky.

by mrkupe on Jan 6, 2009 10:44 PM EST reply actions

Volstad is tall and can put great sink on his pitches…he doesn’t throw particulary that hard but has great control…As a marlins fan I really like that he will be the 3 starter this year behind Nolasco and Johnson. A good fact about him is that his ERA his seinor year in high school was 0.00.

Stanton

Do you think this guy is going to be the next Ryan Howard or next Grady Sizemore like…the guy can hit and has a fantastic arm.

by mlefkee2 on Jan 6, 2009 11:11 PM EST reply actions

Really like this one

He’s pretty much nothing like Sizemore. But he’s a really good athlete with size and raw power that’s already playing up. Best of all, it sounds like he’s got a pretty good head for the game and making adjustments. Big time raw talent + present production + makeup = winner.

Chris Coghlan

Does he have any kind of chance to make the team? His numbers look solid and he could be a nice 2B if they move Uggla to 1B or 3B.

You went full retard. No one ever comes back from that. - Sgt. Osiris

nope

not unless Uggla is moved

How good is Sean West

I know I really like him…but
is he as close to major league ready as some people say he is? (Gammons)
also is he like a B+ type of grade or more of a B- type of Grade?

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Jan 7, 2009 2:36 AM EST reply actions

I like him a lot

Ive heard good reports about him coming back from labrum injury and if you look at his numbers as the year went on they all got better. He decreased his walks and increased his k’s

by FishHead on Jan 7, 2009 11:56 AM EST up reply actions

Some think he may be destined for the bullpen

I read a quote from an AFL scout that said that to date West has the traditional “tall guy problem” of not being able to repeat his delivery on a consistent basis, and that the resulting control problems could mean that the best use of his stuff would be to stick him in the pen and just let him blow batters away.
