McPherson vs. Laroche

I have been trying to figure out my 3b situation for the upcoming season. I currently have Andy Laroche at 3b. I've been looking over Dallas Mcpherson recently and noticed that both he and Laroche have a similar risk/reward going for them. I was wondering what everyone thought of these players and which one they think will have the better season and/or carreer. Laroche has Pedro Alvarez waiting right behind him as does McPherson with Matt Dominguez.  Mcpherson if healthy can mash HR although with a high K rate. Laroche is a big mystery. He has a great k/bb ratio and if healthy can hit for avg. with 20-25 Hr. Who do you go with here? I also have Matt Dominguez in my minors so would it be better to grab Mcpherson so I at least have the starter and replacement?

very good question

I have nearly the same exact question (which I posted a few weeks ago and didn’t get many responses to), except I already have LaRoche and McPherson. As of right now, it looks like McPherson is going to be given the chance to start at 3B for the Marlins with Cantu moving to first. I think Alvarez is more of a threat to force LaRoche aside , although I could see LaRoche moving to 2B, increasing his fantasy value if he can put up expected numbers. McPherson’s future is up to what he does in the first half of 2009. If he does what he can do, he’ll be a force for the next few years, whether it’s with the Marlins or another team. Right now, I have more faith in McPherson than LaRoche, but mostly because McPherson is in a better lineup with HanRam and Maybin setting the table for a lot of RBI opportunities.

McPherson

After the season he put up in Triple A, I would bet on FLA giving him every opportunity to succeed…especially since they moved Jacobs! For some reason(nothing scientifical, just gut) I have a feeling McPherson has a breakout season and lives up to some of that hype he brought to the table years ago. I see Mike Jacobs type #’s but with alot better OBP.

As far as Laroche goes…he doesn’t do it for me. And in all likelyhood he will be Waiver Wire material in short order.

Mcpherson

he magically learned to take pitches last year, upping his walk rate frm about6% to about 14% in AAA. Still whiffs about 35% of the time. Tough call. He has a lot of upside, especially in a points league that does not subtract K’s….

McPherson the next Hamilton?

McPherson is eerily similar to Josh Hamilton in his insanely high prospect status, then failure and missing a lot of playing time, to coming back strong. Hamilton broke out last year, and I’m hoping that McPherson does this year. Is he Hamilton – doubtful, but as a 3B he COULD put up monster numbers. I’ve had an offer for him on the table for the #2 overall pick in a 10-team dynasty league (I already have the #1 overall pick). The pick is essentially of newly added prospects to Yahoo – my 1st choice is obvious (Wieters), but I have 3 options: a) keep McPherson or b) trade McPherson for #2 overall and select somebody with it or c) trade McPherson for #2 and spin off the #2 for somebody (hopefully) better. I’m still torn between these options, though.

Ironic Comparison...

I was very close to posting that same comp…but held back…that would be a huge leap forward for McPherson. But if that is what you believe, DO NOT trade him for a #2 pick…he will pay a much greater dividend later if your comp is right, or…you’ll be kicking yourself come July.

or...

i’ll be kicking myself come July when he gets hurt again…haha. I agree that it would be a HUGE leap, but I believe there’s at least a slight possibility of seeing something like it (with a lower BA and more Ks).

Doubtful

Josh Hamilton is more of a freak than anything. He struggled his first few years in the minors due to psychological issues more than anything else. Then he got hurt. Then he got suspended. He had this sudden revalation that he was screwing up big time, re-devoted himself to baseball and is now probably the best OF in baseball (or at least in the top 5).

McPhereson always struggled with his K rate, hardly ever took a BB, and hurt his back. Completely different set of circumstances. McPhereson’s struggles are more due to performance and injury, not mental.

The comparison

I only meant for production purposes, I think his numbers could be Hamilton like. I am very familiar with the LIFE turn around Hamilton made…one of the most impressive things I have ever heard.

Trade McPherson if we are talking 08 draftees you could take Matusz or Smoak and have 2 studs in the meantime with a little bit of patience and if McPherson was that great how come the Marlin’s didn’t give him a shot earlier?

by mseward on Jan 5, 2009 5:42 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think the Marlins did the right thing...

They let him do something LAA hadn’t let him do since 2002…play a whole season at one level and get comfortable! Triple A at that, and the #’s were sick. They had no reason to bring him up with Jacobs and Cantu holding down the corners. I think the Marlins know they have something good in McPherson, and that is why they had no problem trading Jacobs!

But, depending on the quality of “prospects” available, I might make that trade for a #2 if players of Wieters capabilities are available! You said it was Yahoo though, and they usually don’t list players unless they are already called up, or a shoe in to start(ala Wieters)

re

the good news is that i already have the #1 overall pick for the prospects, and then i start off the year with the #1 waiver priority (the benefit of finishing well in last place in my league next year). because of this, i don’t necessarily NEED the #2 pick. i’m still torn.

What kind of players are available in this draft

Give me some names besides Wieters…I would take players of his caliber over McPherson everyday…

names

that’s just the problem – I don’t know who will be available until Yahoo starts posting their fantasy baseball. Generally, as you mentioned, they only list players who are a shoe in or have already been called up. so, essentially anybody who wasn’t called up last year and is expected to start spring training on MLB rosters (your guess is as good as mine), there’s no way of knowing who they’re going to add, and when (obviously they would need to be added before we do our draft, which is usually a week to a week and a half before opening day).

Maybin might be an option

He has had 2 stints in the bigs and should be starting out of spring and possibly leading off for FLA. So if you need HR’s go with Mac, if you need SB’s and runs, trade up to Maybin.

maybin

I already have Maybin. i’m stacked with young’uns already, including HanRam, Justin Upton, Stphen Drew, Jay Bruce, LaRoche, Iannetta, McPherson, Snider, Antonelli, Ka’aihue, Maybin, Nelson Cruz, Ian Stewart, Brandon Wood, Clay Buchholz, Garza, Andrew Miller, David Price, johnny Cueto, Parra, etc.

Original question

Having said i’d rather have an 08 draftee or recent prospect than McPherson I have to go for McPherson over LaRoche. Only a couple of years older and led the minors in HRs while LaRoche has been awful in the majors

by mseward on Jan 5, 2009 5:46 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

is this a video game league?

cause you might want to make some transactions of laroche and mcpherson are your options, you should probably get guys that can play in the majors

re:

No it’s a 24 team DMB league with 10 reserves and 15 minors slots. I have Laroche currently at 3b and am trying to upgrade at 3b but i may not be able to and stay under our offseason cap (We use actual player salaries). I can possibly deal laroche and upgrade other spots and get Mcpherson in return. Hence the original question. I also have Dominguez in my minors so i was curious.

I apologize for being ingnorant but what is DMB

I have seen this on the sight a few times and can’t figure out the ancronym.

Diamond Mind

is the greatest thing ever. A good DMB league is light years better than fantasy baseball.

+1

I joined one right before the 2003 season. Haven’t played fantasy baseball since.

re:

it’s essentially a Dynasty league where you keep your entire roster year after year and keep minor league players. Each type of league is different but that’s the basic jist of it.

McPhearson vs. Laroche

I actually wrote both up in “Can this Guy Play” pieces on my blog last season. They are different types of ballplayers for sure, but they will go so late in fantasy drafts that neither presents much risk.

LaRoche

McPherson
