Daryl Jones or Andrew Lambo?

I have one spot remaining on my minor league roster (keeper) and am torn between two players, Daryl Jones (STL) and Andrew Lambo (LAD).  I am a big fan of both hitters, however, there is only room for one on my team.

Who would you choose and why?

If it helps, I have provided some statistics below:

OF Daryl Jones (STL) - Born 1987

Hi A (FSL) - 300 AB, .320/.399/.463/.862, .385 wOBA, .150 ISOP, 9.4 BB%, 19 K%

AA (TEX) - 124 AB, .290/.409/.500/.909, .389 wOBA, .210 ISOP, 14.6 BB%, 19.9 K%

OF Andrew Lambo (LAD) - Born 1988

Low A (MWL) - 472 AB, .288/.346/.462/.808, .348 wOBA, .173 ISOP, 8 BB%, 21.2 K%

AA (SL) - 36 AB, .389/.421/.750/.1.171, .469 wOBA, .361 ISOP, 5.3 BB%, 23.7 K%

Comps are fun, let's hear yours...

Depends on your needs

Jones should be a nice contributor in multiple categories, a possible 25 SB/ 15 HR guy. Lambo could be a guy who could hit around 30 HR, possibly comparing well to Joey Votto. So I’d say if you need more speed production go with Jones, if you need more power go with Lambo. Either one is a good choice however.

Comps

Votto is actually a pretty good comp for Lambo. Never thought of that.

As for Jones, I’ve been reading Crawford/Granderson comps on various sites and blogs.

Jones

My favorite Daryl Jones comp is Johnny Damon

Interesting

Funny, I picked up Lambo last week (tip from a thread on this board) last week and plan on picking up Jones or Jefry Marte next week…

Being a Dodger fan, I preferred the flier on Lambo

wow

It’s tied 30-30!

I was hoping to get swayed one way or another, haha. I guess I have good reason to be really torn about this decision between protected Jones or Lambo, lol.

I went with Jones

The guys at BA were going on about his upside in the podcast last week.

Then again, BA just named Lambo the top prospect in the LA system

And?

That doesn’t really tell us anything in relation to Jones.

by FI2 on Jan 31, 2009 12:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Why?

Why is this post so rec.? Im not knocking the person who wrote it or saying its a bad post. Its perfectly reasonable post with a valid question but does it need to be rec.? Just to recomend this post casue Dewey wrote it childish, stupid and does this site a disservice IMHO.

Here is an interesting question...

Would you take either of them over Aaron Crow?

I could protect BOTH

If I were to cut Aaron Crow. Thoughts?

See, I am not a huge fan of Crow

His severe decline towards the end of last year right before the draft, coupled with the botched negotiations with the Nats (where both parties were at fault) make me hesitate to be a believer in him. I’m just not sure he has the mental makeup to be a successful big league pitcher.

I’d go with both Lambo and Jones myself.

Crow - Decline at the end of 2008?

I watched Aaron Crow against Ole Miss in the Coral Gables Regional last May on ESPN and he was one of the most impressive college pitchers I’ve seen in some time.

He was 91-94 with great arm side run, sick slider that he commanded very well and a serviceable changeup. Ole Miss never stood a chance in that game. He was way more impressive than Kyle Gibson who pitched later on in the postseason and is soon to be a 1st round pick this June.

And just looking back through his starts, the outing before that regional game, he shut down Oklahoma in the Big 12 tourney. And the outing before that he shut down Nebraska. The outing before that he shut down Kansas.

Crow had a couple of rough games in the middle of last year, including the 40 MPH wind game against Texas where Priday hit 4 HRs. But in Crow’s last 4 starts of the year he gave up like 2 earned runs.

I went through stage 3 testicular cancer last year

And I don’t hope that on anyone. However, I do get the gist of what you are saying. People are ruining this site and all the hard work John puts into it to try to be funny.

Re: recommends

It’s only taking 3 or 4 recommends to get Dewey’s posts into the Recommended Fanposts section. Part of the issue is that the rest of us never recommend any other posts…

I hope.....

you weren’t serious in what you typed there. If you were, you are more pathetic than the person who rec’d Dewey. In fact, your post was moronic!!!

Jones

Both of these guys have similar skill sets, though Lambo likely has more power potential for the future. But Jones’ BB rate is much stronger than Lambo’s, and I could easily see Jones settling into that #2 slot in the Cards lineup in 2010/11.

This pairing would make for an interesting smackdown though.

jones

i think jones hits leadoff with rasmus hitting 2nd

Hey fewgoodcards

As a leadoff hitter, what comparables do you have for Jones? Crawford/Granderson too optimistic?

comps

crawford is a good comp for me in terms of hitting ability, but i don’t think jones will ever steal 50 bases. i think he is more of a 20-25 steal guy. those stolen base numbers put him closer to granderson, but i don’t think he quite has granderson’s power.

overall i would say i would expect him to hit .280-.290 with 30 doubles, 10 tripes, and 15 homers per year on average with 20 or so steals. that doesn’t put him quite in the league of crawford and granderson, but that is still a darn good leadoff hitter.

by fewgoodcards on Feb 2, 2009 8:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That would

still make him a decent contributor at the ML level. As a Cards fan, I’d take that.

Jones

Does he have the speed of Crawford? I always thought he was bit slower than CC

Lambo

Sweet polaroid man!

i am a big jones fan

and am tempted to be total homer here, but I would take Lambo, myself. His average was driven by a higher than usual LD% and BABIP and his track record is… well…

He did have LASIK and really could have put things all together, I believe he may have, but his “bustability” potential seems to be fairly high. I think he could have much more fantasy value than Lambo at his peak, but I have a little more faith Lambo will actually reach his.

I'll be the one overrating these Faberge' eggs, thank you very much!

I don't think that Jones will bust

His three main assets are walks, speed and defense. Those things never really go into a slump. Even if he his for a relatively low average and his power never develops, he could still end up being a pretty valuable player.
