Viciedo no longer a fatty?

Hey slow news day, here's something to keep you busy:

From Rotoworld:

"Manager Ozzie Guillen said Thursday that Dayan Viciedo has lost considerable weight since signing with the White Sox in mid-December.

"I got great news about the former fat guy,'' Guillen said. ''Now he's a big man. He's a strong, big kid. When I saw him the first time, he was overweight, there's no doubt." Guillen indicated that Viciedo has a legitimate chance to make the Opening Day roster, but it remains likely that the 19-year-old will get at least some minor league seasoning."

Haha leave it to Ozzie to be upfront, the quote is at least as great as the news.  But this could be a good sign for big V as one of his biggest criticisms was his weight, motivation to succeed and attitude, and it seems that this is becoming less of an issue now.  Maybe this also reduces any injury risk and increases the chances that he can be adequate defensively at third base?
I'm a big fan of Viciedo, and even though John gave him a C+ initially he did change it to B- after some video, and I would think with this news it could raise even more.  Do you think he'll make the opening day roster, and if so, what can we expect from him?

Big V

There can only be one. His name is Angel Villalona.

interesting

that Villalona is actually one of Viciedo’s most frequently used comps. It remains to be seen who is the real Big V. My guess is it’ll probably be Villalona though, I guess Viciedo will have to settle for medium V.

haha

man, i was just playing, but you’re right: we’ll have to see who can claim the title of the true Big V. Viciedo is damn near Bill Brasky on the international scene. When Baseball America named Blake Beavan its amateur player of the year two years ago, they cited his complete game shutout for the US Junior National Team vs. Cuba in Cuba. The pitching coach talked about Beavan striking out Viciedo in a big spot in that game and was quoted as saying that Viciedo was the best hitter on earth at that age. It was funny how casually he said it. He was around 16 at the time.

Villalona’s 17 bombs playing mostly as a 17-year-old is pretty impressive in the context, but I’m still concerned that his lack of strikezone knowledge and discipline will prevent him from either succeeding at higher levels or unleashing the potential of his powerful bat.

Comps

That’s kinda weird if you think about it. How often is someone listed as a comp for someone older than them?

a player in the best shape of their life?

never heard of such an article being written. i will certainly take this article at face value.

I know it sounds like just another spring training cliche...

But I think this is kind of different since this is a 19-year old kid with big potential and serious conditioning/motivation issues who we don’t know much about. If this news is true, it could have a significant impact on his likelihood of reaching the majors and succeeding, at the very least because he has already made a positive impression on his eccentric manager, with the spot for the third base job currently up in the air.

I think this is much more newsworthy and notable than some 30s something player with an already established career stating that he’s losing weight, building muscle, or claiming he’ll steal 50 bases, etc.

maybe.

i think i’ll just wait and see. it’s january and he’s talking at the fanfest. these stories are a dime a dozen, both about rookies and veterans, this time of year.

shoot

a dime a dozen, yeah, when they started to talk about andruw jones coming to camp way too big that obviously ended, errrrrrrr, had no impact on his career

viciedo

im just not that impressed by him – has talent but there are not only quetsions about his body (a la big V) but about his work ethic and we hear that he is lazy…

and its ozzie. he of the mancrush on michael young

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

the point is ozzie has a lot to say without having the gift of gab. that means hes annoying.

the michael young thing was kind of a joke

What?

The one thing you have to give Ozzie is that he knows how to speak interestingly.

plus he plays for the white sox

clearly, only a loser would do that

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

a lazy one at that

Michael Phelps can swim faster than you can run. He can probably swim faster than you can break the sound barrier. If you and a friend are swimming, and Michael Phelps is coming to eat you, you only have to be faster than your friend.

Just kidding. Michael Phelps will catch up with and eat the shit out of both of you.

Good to see...

That Viciedo was motivated and committed during the off-season. These were some concerns about him during his signing time. He’s a legitimate 30+ HR threat.

Huh?
He’s a legitimate 30+ HR threat.

Oops

I didn’t mean right now. Eventually.
