Minor League Draft coming up...
I'm in a 1st year 20 team dynasty. We're done drafting MLB players, but our MiLB draft is coming up next week.
I have the #3 overall pick, and I'm preparing for Wieters & Price to go 1 & 2.
Who do I take? Looking at Snider, Heyward, Rasmus, and Alvarez right now...but I'm torn.
What does everyone think?

Looking at your team, and thinking about the four guys you listed, Alvarez would make the most sense. You could really use a third baseman (and even if he ends up at first, he will be very valuable there as well). The outfielders are all better than him at this point, but on a strict needs standpoint, alvarez makes sense.
+1
Alvarez makes the most sense from looking at your team, but there are some really good bats left. Also, if you get Alvarez you could eventually move DeRosa back over to second.
Do the rules require them to have played in the minors or have been drafted?
If not, I’d consider Stephen Strasburg. If so, I’d consider taking Bumgarner over any of those guys. I know you shouldn’t draft for need generally, but it looks like you should be set in the OF for a while, barring an injury, and there are a lot of questions about the shape Alvarez is in. Obviously there’s more risk inherent in picking a young pitcher over a more developed outfielder, but most of those guys are probably going to make the bigs this year and then just rot at the end of your bench.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Don't forget
Whoever you do decide on for the third pick, just make darned sure that you do not become so enamored of him that you miss either Wieters or Price if they drop to you. This happened to me once in a football league where I was sure of the first two, and somebody surprised me by taking someone else at number two. Instead of taking my original number two, I picked the guy I was going to take all along at 3. It was a major failure on my part that year. So, IF Wieters or Price falls to you, make sure you take them.
Otherwise, I’m not too enamored of #3. I’d probably take Snider, but I’d rather trade down if I could, then take an Alvarez or Bumgarner or Cahill or whatever.
if your league doesn’t penalize for offensive Ks then Mike Stanton might be the best prospect in all of the minors behind wieters and price, i’m only half kidding….otherwise heyward might have the most upside, but any of those are good choices according to most

Heyward
I dont like the Alvarez pick at all..if he moves to first (which looks like there is a good chance) then why would you rather not have Smoak?? Assuming you dont want to go with a SP, I think Heyward is your guy.
I would rank my top 5:
Weiters
Price
Heyward
Bumgarner
Smoak
"Why would you rather not have Smoak"
Defense doesn’t count in fantasy, and Alvarez should be the better hitter in the money categories.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
re
I dont think that is correct at all…Alvarez does not hit lefties especially well and Smoak projects to hit for more power. So what money cats are you talking about? Batting Avg? If you take a minor league player because you think he will hit for 20 points higher than another guy you are foolish and wont develop a very good team.
"Smoak projects to hit for more power"
Every scouting report I’ve read on Pedro GLOWS about his ability/potential to hit for power. If you want to call it a wash, okay. Just don’t try to make “power” a point in Smoak’s favor.
actually...
The more I look at your team, the more I think you might want to try to win in a few years an rebuild.
Thome
Manny
Oswalt
Lowe
Rivera
Are all past their primes, and your 2B and 3B options arent very good. I do realize this is a 20 team league, but with my experience in them, you want the best fantasy performers you can find, regardless of position you want studs. That combined with I dont think yu have a great window to win, I would probably take Smoak.
Best Player Available
I wouldn’t be drafting based on what your team needs – I would draft based on whom you think is the #3 prospect in baseball. The problem with your position is, IMO, there is no clear cut BPA at #3. You can make a solid case for Heyward, Snider, Rasmus, Bumgarner, Neftali Feliz and a few other guys. There is a clear dropoff from 2 to 3. See if maybe you can trade down and pick up some extra picks. The difference between #3 and #13 is quite marginal.
If you fail to move the pick, then just go with your gut on who you would rank #3 on a prospect list.
hah
Yep…it sucks. I agree there is a real drop off after the top 2. I’ve tried to move the pick, but it’s getting tough.
My gut tells me Snider or Heyward…but I can’t decide
FWIW
I have Heyward ranked #3 and Snider ranked #7 on my personal top 100. Snider’s K rate worries me just enough to keep him out of the top 5, but there are plenty others here that would disagree with me.
--> like me
RE: Snider – I’m not too concerned yet, given the age vs level argument. But #3 or #7, not too much to argue with there. I’d probably lean towards Snider, but admit some of that may have to do with his proximity to majors.
Also, I tend to slide pitching prospects, especially those below AA, down on my fantasy draft board, so guys like Feliz, Bumgarner, Porcello, etc. would fall outside the top 10 for me.
