Predict this years Mike Stanton
Last year Mike Stanton came from a 2nd round pick to 39 homers and close to .300 AVG. who will be this years mike stanton? Not who will hit 39 homers but who will come from the International scene or the draft in their debut and set the prospect scene on fire? A couple off the top of my head are Destin Hood and Isaac Galloway. I have high hopes for both of these two and cant wait to see how they progress in their debuts.

Dixon popped into my head as well
But I do not expect him to really take off this season. I imagine he will start the year in extended spring-training before going to Short-Season ball in Vancouver.
I think that he has the potential to be a CFer who can put up great power numbers, but that he is too raw to really become a top prospect next year.

I agree
for the most part…but did anyone honestly think Stanton would take the next step so soon?
He was also considered extremely raw leading up to the 2008 season.

Yea, it's hard to predict
But my reluctance is mainly because I think he’ll play in short-season ball next year. It’s tough to “break-out” when your season doesn’t start untill July.

Brett Lawrie
Table for one. The kid is going to put up 1B numbers from the C position.

Wasn't he a 1st rounder?
I vote for Derrik Gibson of the Red Sox

You know Stanton was a 2nd rounder, right?
I don’t think anybody saw 39 HRs out of the guy, but the talent to be a big time producer was certainly there by most accounts.

Yes, that's why I didn't understand how a 1st Rounder like Lawrie would be comparable.

He was their 2nd rounder
I donno if he can have a big power year yet. He is rail thin when I talked to him in september in Oneonta when Lowell played the Tigers. Great kid and sounded like this kid wanted to be great, very humble.

Hm...
Some possibilities out of the 08 draft:
JP Ramirez
Tyler Massey
Adam Milligan
Tim Fedroff
Gabe Jacobo
Juan Carlos Perez

Ramirez
Everything I’ve heard about Ramirez says he has a great stroke, but one that will hit more for average than power.
What can you tell me about the rest of the guys on that list?

From their draft profiles:
Massey: Great makeup is always the first thing people attirbute to outfielder Tyler Massey. Coaches and scouts love the way he plays the game and handles himself on and off the field. He’s also athletic and was a multi-sport standout in high school. At the plate, he has raw power and a feel for hitting, with natural strength. He has a short lefthanded stroke with leverage and uses the whole field.
Signed for $525,000 in the 14th
Milligan: Milligan is athletic and has plus raw power from the left side… has a big, strong, athletic body… may have as much raw power as anyone in the junior college ranks
Signed for $350,000 in the 6th
Fedroff: Fedroff is an offensive-oriented player with one of the best pure swings around. He is also the most athletic of the Tar Heel players eligible for this year’s draft, with above-average speed (6.7 in the 60), an average arm and an ability to handle center field… he has strong forearms and wrists and packs a powerful punch at the plate. With a compact lefthanded swing, Fedroff has hit for average and power this season, leading the Tar Heels with 12 home runs in the regular season
Signed for $725,000 in the 7th
Jacobo: Jacobo was a late bloomer in high school who stuck with his Sacramento State commitment even after other, higher-profile schools tried to recruit him late. He intrigues scouts with his athletic ability for a player his size and with his bat. Jacobo ranked second in the Western Athletic Conference in home runs as a sophomore with 14 and had 13 this season. He has strength in his short swing, enough bat speed to catch up to velocity and a high finish that gives him loft power.
Signed for $110,000 in the 10th, excellent debut this year
Juan Carlos Perez: Juan Carlos Perez put up the craziest statistics in the state. Playing at hitter-friendly Western Oklahoma JC, he set a Division II junior college records with 37 homers (one short of the overall juco mark) and 102 RBIs while batting .465 with a 1.102 slugging percentage. While his stats might be inflated, the 6-foot, 185-pounder has legitimate tools. He has a sound swing with bat speed and easy power, average speed and arm strength, and a chance to play center field. The bigger issues with Perez are his age (he’ll be 22 in November)

Let me think...
I’m gonna go with Angel Morales. I don’t think he’ll hit 39, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see him slug 20-25 homers which would be pretty damn impressive for a 19 year old in the MWL.

Smoak
I don’t think anyone would be shocked if Smoak hit 30+ homers next season. People are think more along the lines of sleepers to have a huge power season.

Yanks
Not his debut, but Abraham Almonte could be a good candidate. Kelvin de Leon? Eduardo Sosa? Addison Maruszak?
Pitching wise some candidates (just based on DSL numbers and age) could be Jose Quintana and Melvin Croussett.

Nico Vasquez
I think if he does not spend the whole year at pitcher friendly Palm Beach he could put up some nice numbers.

Juan Duran
The comps to Dave Winfield, Vlad Guerrero, and Juan Gonzalez can’t be ignored.
I also expect Wilmer Flores to continue to marvel people beyond his years.

to go one further
jefry marte gets overshadowed by wilmer but it wouldn’t surprise me to see him blow up this year.
and aderlin rodriguez is another IFA who sounds like he could start his pro career much in the same way as marte & flores.

Here's one for ya...
Fernando Martinez
He’s had parts of two seasons too get aclimated to AA ball, is STILL young for the level, has shown he can play when healthy and has played great this winter. I think he will really, really shine this season and I predict he will make an impact in the show thus season perhaps as well.
I know, I know, the question is about DEBUT players. How about Eric Hosmer, Pedro Alvarez, and Yonder Alonso? I realize anything Alvarez or Hosmer could do wont be unexpected but I think that Yonder, if he debuts in the FSL will post an OBP over or near .500 and continue by creaming AA ball as well. He’s my dude man.

Debuts
I tend to think of one’s first full season as really being their debut, or chance to breakout. Usually short season ball is such a small sample size anyways.

Depends on what we are looking for..
Kyle Russell will hit a pile of HR’s. Adrian Nieto will outplay his draft status as will Brett Hunter and Tim Fedroff. Rolando Gomez will be an amazing defender and get the attention of many. The guy that I think will move up the propect ladder faster than anyone thought is Jaff Decker. This guy can rake. Maybe another Travis Snider??
