Kris Medlen last night
I hadn't heard of him, although seems to have gotten some comment here. 9-5-0-0-0-12 in Southern League playoffs. The 12ks/0 walks caught my eye and he did have a nice ratio. Converted from reliever. Smallish, but that doesn't bother me much. 5'10" 175 lbs. Maybe he can pull a Jurrjens next year. With Hanson gives them some nice rotation potential.
As an aside, would you rather have Hanson, Chacin, Alderson, Brett Anderson or Cecil?

I would say
Anderson, Hanson, Alderson, Chacin, and Cecil
this is based purely on potential
Anderson, Hanson, and Alderson are front of the rotation starters while Chacin and Cecil are mid to front of rotation guys.

Anderson
Isn’t he a 89-92 lefty with a plus change? Its not bad, but its not a groundbreaking repetoire.

So nothin on Medlen?
He’s been really impressive since moving to the rotation. If the Braves were planning to move him back to the ‘pen, certainly they’ll have to rethink that at this point. His size and high-ish BABIP are cause for mild concern, but he’s been one of the best pitchers in AA since he began starting.

pardon?
I’m a bit new at this, but I was under the impression that a high babip would be a good thing, as that would mean that it would be likely to improve?

Sometimes it’s a good thing, sometimes it’s bad thing. Pitchers, like hitters, have some control over their BABIP. The same way that some hitters consistently put up a higher BABIP than would be expected, so do some pitchers. With Medlen, it’s too early to tell if he’s a high BABIP guy or just having bad luck, so it’s less something to be concerned about than just something to keep an eye on.

Well put
I’ll just add that the traditional argument is that high-BABIP pitchers tend to be weeded out by competition early in their careers. I expect Medlen’s BABIP to regress towards .300 a bit, but it’s possible that his BABIP could stay above that mark. And that would tend to be a bad thing for him long-term.

not hanson or chacin?
I am a little surprised people are so much higher on Anderson. I picked up Hanson in our weekly draft yesterday. Anderson, Alderson, cecil, chacin all still out there.
Anderson’s stat line this year is skewed by one really bad start right before he got hurt. Still, I hear confluicting rports but assume he doesn’t have a blazing fastball.
I like him, but chacin’s numbers seem so much better. I think also John was surprised chacin did so much worse than madbum in the poll.
Love my young starters I have in my keeper league. Neftali Feliz, Dereck Holland, Tommy Hanson, as well as Morrow and Pelfrey. I had hughes, but unlike the yankees i packaged him to get Johan Santana.
And, hard to believe, i could still snare Anderson and/or Chacin, cecil et al.
Hitters I am much weaker. Logan Morrison, Angel Salome, Aaron Cunningham and Wilmer Flores. Not as much left on the table there. Michael Taylor, Eric Hosmer, Daryl Jones are the biggest ones left, I suppose.

GO/AO
Hanson gives up a ton of fly ball outs. That’s probably not a bad thing when you’ve got Jordan Schafer roaming your OF, but it means he could be at risk to giving up a lot of HRs at the ML level, which would certainly hurt him. Don’t get me wrong, even with a high HR rate, he’ll be successful if he continues to keep runners off the bases, but it is something to worry about.

hanson go/ao
Hanson is a flyball picther, but so is Santana. You can succeed going that route. If Anderson was extreme go pitcher I’d see it, but he isn’t. Cecil and Chacin are extreme go guys, so I’d go with them over Anderson if one is go obsessive.
I do like go pitchers, and that’s why cecil and Chacin seem more intriguing (but from a fantasy perspective chacin will need it in Colorado). Hanson’s K rate and H/Ip were so good though I placed him over Anderson.
I can still get Anderson, Alderson, chacin or Cecil next week. Actually, i have 2 picks, although i need another hitter, maybe Michael taylor.
