Conor Gillaspie called up...
is it just me or is it crazy that a guy drafted just 3 months ago has already been called up to the show? He has 24 games of professional experience at 3B with numbers that are far from impressive. I just dont see why any team would call someone up so quickly. Has anyone heard about this possibly happening or seen this before with a position player? I know its been done with relievers but i dont recall any position players.

The only way this makes sense is if Gillaspie, who was reportedly reluctant to sign, had a handshake agreement with the Giants that they would call him up in September this year.
I’m not so sure that’s what happened, but I’m hoping.

Response
Considering there were rumors that one of the hangups in the contract negotiations was that Gillespie wanted a major league deal, this seems possible, perhaps even likely.
Maybe the team preferred the financial structure of a regular signing bonus rather than major league deal? Not sure how those things work.

could’ve been a way to avoid drawing the ire of the commissioner’s office, and give the effect of an mlb contract to a sandwich pick.

i actually love the idea of giving borderline talents like gillaspie a major league deal
the key to it is that you don’t waste an option year in the first or third years. if the guy is as close to his potential as gillaspie is, you don’t really lose anything by fasttracking him like this.

Gillaspie
He was the first of the Giants’ top 4 picks to sign this year. Had the Giants given him a major league deal, that may have made negotiations with Buster Posey that much more awkward and difficult, as Posey would have demanded a major league contract as well, plus the big money he was asking for. Thus, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a side deal regarding a call-up.
That Gillaspie was signed for slot money (despite reportedly high bonus demands) makes much more sense if this side arrangement was part of the deal.

Yep. Plus, the giants management is giving two contradictory lines:
1) They want to evaluate him for next year.
2) They aren’t planning to play him much.
That likely means 1) is just cover the illusion, and it was an arrangement.

Just back from my San Jose game
It was a nice win. Posey had a key single that helped a rally.
Anyways, WOW! How could Conor be called up so fast. Wasn’t Ryan Zimmerman the last to be up the same year as drafted?

The Nationals seem to like to call their prospects up right away. They also called up Chad Cordero when he as drafted (at the time there were still the Expos).

Zimmerman
He was called up just months after being drafted a few years ago. Of course he had also torn up the minors in his limited time down there too.

While groug may be right, it’s usually wise not to try to make sense of giants management.

He was called up as a reliever in 2006, I think
And then a starter in 2007.

Andrew Miller, Russ Detwiler, and Justin Verlander all had contract clauses
which guaranteed them a callup in their first year of pro play.

Verlander....
I didn’t know that about him. I knew he was given a pro contract when he signed but I didn’t know there was a clause that he would get the call his first year. He only had two starts that year in the majors if memory serves me well, and both were one game call ups when they had double headers and needed the extra starter. You could be right though.

It doesn't really seem like it's helped Andrew Miller either so...
Not sure what way you’re trying to go with that comment.

"Wasn’t Ryan Zimmerman the last to be up the same year as drafted?"
Miller(2006) was up after Zimmerman(2005) in the scenario being discussed, so i felt it necessary to mention him as no one else had mentioned him.
