BTW
sorry if the format of my post looks crunched up. I haven’t updated to the latest Safari yet. I guess that is why….

I love the topic BUT
you forgot to include the KC Royals. They are sixth worst in the league after plumeting through August. I’m not going to guess that it’ll get much better facing all those AL Central teams who beat up on them the rest of the season. Any thoughts on the Royals?

Hmm...
No way Gorski goes anywhere near that high, i dont see Fishback going that high either. For the fun of it ill throw out some early guesses.
Washington- Dustin Ackley
San Diego- Gratnt Green
Seattle- Alex White
Kansas City- Stephen Strasburg
Pittsburg- Matthew Purke

signing difficulty?
It’s hard to see the Nationals ponying up for him, but I’d be surprised if San Diego and Seattle both passed on him. You get a new GM in Seattle with a plan, surely part of that plan would be to draft the best guy available if he’s there.

He's supposed to be a generational talent
And I’m not speaking in metaphors- he’s supposed to be a great pitcher, barring injuries.
Everything I’ve heard about him says he’s worth the money.

Strasburg
Is Strasburg being represented by Boras?

Thanks
That’ll definitely affect his draft stock, especially if Washington ends up with the first pick.
I caught one of Strasburg’s starts in the Olympics and, if his arm holds up, he should be something special.

The Mariners, however...
have seemed to have no reservations about dealing with Boras.

True
Seattle is a definite possibility. As is Kansas City.

Why i have Strasburg dropping
Obviously because of signability concerns here. You have to remember the Nationals are also going to have the 10th pick this year. The slot recommendation for the 10th overall pick is going to be $2 mill +, now add that to what Strasburg is going to be asking for (im going to say ($6.5-7 mill bonus) thats almost $9 million of your scouting budget you’ve just blown up within your first 2 picks.
To put that into perspective the Kansas City Royals spent just over $10 million dollars to sign their top 10 round picks, that was the most in all of baseball. You also have to add in the factor that the Nationals have prefered to spend their money on the guys they take outside of the first round like Burgess, Smoker, McGeary, Hood, Nieto.
The Padres would be an obviously place for Strasburg to land because of the San Diego connection, but you also have to realize how brutally bad they need hitting. To me, im just not sure that they are going to wanna pay all that money for Strasburg when they badly need hitting and a stud like Green is available. I think they will save the extra money and go with the guy thats getting the Longoria/Tulowitzki comps.
Now we come to Seattle and frankly i just think that that front office is such a mess that they wont make a smart decision there. I’ve heard that they really want to cut salary there after the season and i dont really know if who ever is in charge there will be able to take a guy like Strasburg and pay him.
As everybody has mentioned it obviously too early to be doing this but it is a fun debate to have, heck we dont even know if this will be the draft order but its still fun

This Talk Reminds Me Of...
2005, when everybody was coming up with scenarios where Justin Upton drops. When all was said and done, the D-Backs took the top talent. I don’t see how the Nats, or whomever gets the #1 pick, can pass on Stasburg unless suffers an injury, or performs at a level that actually makes people question his vaunted status. The Nats just moved into a new park, they have a handful of good pieces at the big league level, and a very talented system, they can’t go cheap now. Now maybe if Grant Green goes ballistic this year, it could be sort of a Mauer over Prior situation, without the hometown factor. If the Nats are that worried about their draft budget, then reach with their other picks, but don’t blow the chance to land two top 10 talents for the sake of spreading the wealth in the following rounds.
As an M’s fan, I hope you’re right though, because it’s killing me that the M’s are so bad, but so far not quite bad enough to get the Strasburg. So I’d love them to get a shot at him. Grant Green is making the prospect of only getting the #2 pick a little easier to swallow though.

Strasburg
There is no way that San Diego passes on Strasburg.

If the Nats have the top pick, they have to take Strasburg I think especially after missing out on Crow this past draft (I never was to high on Crow but that hurts a bit).
I think Grant Green at 2 makes a ton of since for the Padres.
After that, it gets a little shaky but I think Kazmir2657’s top 5 players are a good guess just no the order I think it will fall.

Doesn't really hurt them much, if at all
They get a replacement pick for Crow this year.

I’m aware but you aren’t going to get that much talent at 10 this year. Just isn’t going to happen.

Think again
2007 #10 pick: Madison Bumgarner
2006 #10 pick: Tim Lincecum
2005 #10 pick: Cameron Maybin
I think the owners of the #10 pick have been pretty happy with their returns in recent years. I haven’t seen anyone predicting the 2009 draft class is going to be the worst in five years.

All of those guys fell (except Bum who still needs to show he has more than a FB) and as the poster below said, the Nats will have considerably less bargaining power since I don’t believe they just keep getting that 10th pick if they fail to sign them. They will lose that pick if they pull another Crow and I think it’s 50/50 that Bowden will still be there.

They’re going to have to take an easy sign guy with that #10 pick…

it hurts them quite a bit
because now they have no bargaining ability for that #11 pick, so they either get a guy who promises he will sign before hand or have to make a signability pick.

I seems like Grant Green is on everyones Padres list
I have to say, it is quite a stretch to predict the first 5 picks In early September. But, yea, Green and Stasburg are almost sure to go in the top 10, assuming the don’t get injured.

Never too early for Draft talk!
I love Grant Green – in the most recent BA, he was compared to Evan Longoria meets Troy Tulowitzki. Who knows if thats how he’ll end up. I think he was pretty clearly the best player on the cape this summer.

Kyle Gibson
This guy is going top 5 for sure, possibly as high as number 2.

Did the NCAA
reinstate him? He was supposed to pitch in the regional we went to in Stillwater this year. Then he was suspened for his contact with an agent I believe.

i don't know
But if not, he could pitch in an independent league and still keep his draft stock high.
The suspension sounded like BS to me considering he’s DEFINITELY not the only one to contact agents…

Us royal fans
always interested in the draft before virtually anyone else. I can’t wait until the day when we can watch the big league team make a run at the postseason…or at least a winning record.

the legend of 2003 lives on...
In all seriousness, hopefully the next winning season is LEGIT, rather than a big fluke. That season hurt us more than it helped.
