What to make of Josh Outman
Josh Outman has been pretty dominant this year with 86 K's in 98.1 IP while allowing only 90 hits. His control hasn't been too great with 45 walks in those 98.1 IP. All of this adds up to a 3.11 ERA and a 1.12 Whip. Generally speaking, these are great numbers.
One obvious problem. Is he better off as a reliever or SP. He was a SP up until this season when phillies tried to convert him to reliever. Obviously the A's are being careful as Outman can be a key part of their future and right now is in their bullpen, hitting 95-97mph consistently
He's still just 23 years old and his numbers indicate he can still pitch. Only question is: Will he be a reliever long term? Or, will he start?
Anyone hear anything or remember any similar cases? Anyone see his outings thus far?

I was assuming that this was a satirical commentary on the Elbert post

Man.....
stuff like this makes me ashamed that we follow the same team. Do you ever have an original thought, or do you only cut/copy/paste other people’s ideas for A’s prospects? It’s pretty uncool to continually do that to people who take the time to create unique FanPosts. If you can’t develop your own post without blatantly stealing someone else’s idea, maybe you should just not make a post.

And they wonder....
why A’s fans tend to annoy me.

Because
your using a stereotype?? I myself am an A’s fan and have no problem admitting when someone is over the line like this post, but to say A’s fans annoy you is, well, annoying. Most real A’s fans are quite knowledgeable and enjoy all facets of the game, not just the A’s and what is happening in Oakland.

The post below this one.
Seriously, the only posts he has created has been copy and paste jobs, or at the very least the ones I have seen.

The last time he did it, it was obviously mocking the prior poster
Perhaps that’s not admirable, but unless he says otherwise I’m assuming it’s satire, not plagiarism.

To be honest
it didn’t bother me a ton, but if you look at other posts, he brings up Outman. I do think it was laziness, though it isnt the end of the world. There isn’t much point in satire towards Elbert or myself – is there? Makes no sense…

Also
Everyone knows that A’s fans only enjoy talking about how smart Billy Beane is at developing hitters and how Chris Carter is the second coming of Ryan Howard. ;)

In a bizarre twist of fate...
I love Josh Outman and thus will give a brief reply. The A"s view him as a starter. The Phils had viewed him as a starter but I believe had concerns about his control. Pretty simple really.
Also – copying and pasting a post like that is pretty lame. Agreed.

What irks me about this is I'm actually curious to know what peoples' thoughts are about Outman
Because, while he wasn’t an afterthought in the Blanton deal, he was a distant second behind Cardenas. It’s a shame that most of this thread is going to be (rightfully) lambasting Asfan4ever723 for his poor judgment (again) in copying a post, and a good opportunity for analysis will be lost.

if anyone has anything interesting to add about outman just put it in the thread. i’m sure the guy is embarrassed enough as it is.
I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

If he's really hitting high-90s, his upside is a lot higher than people thought
There are only a handful of lefties— hell, there are only a handful of starters, period— who consistently hit that kind of velocity. It’s obviously the world’s smallest sample size, but his 94.6 MPH fastball would put him third in baseball right now, and almost a full MPH higher than the next-highest lefty, CC Sabathia.
With that said, I think we have to assume that his velocity in a starting role is not going to be that high until he proves otherwise. If he’s merely good and not amazing, the question then becomes how effective his offspeed stuff is and whether his fastball has sufficient deception, which are not questions I can answer at this point.

Not much movement; no bite at all
they sort of spun up there and sunk a bit at the end. He wasn’t throwing them for strikes, but that was a blessing given the quality of the pitches.
One game, though, and it’s pretty common for pitchers to not have breaking pitches working on various nights. It would be a shame to waste that fastball in the bullpen, especially since the A’s have such great depth there, so I hope he spends next year in AAA working on a changeup or on making the breaking pitch better. (Assuming, of course, that I’m right that he lacks an “out” pitch, which might be wrong.)

I agree with you about Outman
I do think he’s worth talking about. I’d say his upside is probably a #3 starter, his 85th percentile or so is as a setup guy(if he can really maintain mid to high 90’s in the pen), 70th percentile a 4th or 5th starter, his 60th percentile a LOOGY, 50th a long man, and a AAAA guy below that. I think he’ll be a solid piece to the A’s pen unless he’s traded, because he’s probably the 10th guy or so in the starting pitching pecking order. I think he could be part of a trade package this offseason as well, the A’s-Brewers deals mentioned in the Delmon/Garza thread are very interesting ideas I think, and Outman could be helpful in MIlwaukee.

You think there's a 50% chance that Outman will be completely worthless?
Wow, I thought I was harsh on pitching prospects.

Well....
it does seem a little harsh in retrospect, and I do like Outman. But I want to see a little more from him in either the upper minors or the bigs before saying I think he’s got a better than 50% chance of being valuable. His K/BB rate was 1.76 the last two years in AA/AAA, that worries me a bit. I need to see some drop in the walk rate before I get any more bullish on him. I love that he can generate some groundballs with his stuff-that’s one of the reason why I like him. But he has his questions, and they need to be answered.
