Wanted: Dynasty League Advice
I am in a 14 team Dynasty Sim League (using Diamond Mind Baseball). We use 75 man rosters and have a waiver system in place to lock in on new players. The owners are quite savvy and are usually all over the best minor leaguers and college players.
I'm working on rebuilding my team and currently have the following minor league and college players:
Xavier Avery, OF
Emilio Bonificio, 2B
Michael Brantley, OF
Corey Brown, OF
Allan Dykstra, 1B
Tyler Flowers, C
Todd Frazier, SS
Carlos Gonzalez, OF
Wes Hodges, 3B
Lucas May, C
Mike Moustakas, 3B/SS
Carlos Santana, C
Tim Alderson, SP
Jake Arrieta, SP
Trevor Cahill, SP
Brett DeVall, SP
Jaime Garcia, SP/RP
Carlos Gutierrez, RP
Derek Holland, SP
Joshua Outman, RP/SP
Jarrod Parker, SP
Max Scherzer, SP/RP
Daniel Schlereth, RP/SP
James Simmons, SP
Rick van den Hurk, SP
Jordan Walden, SP
Christopher Withrow, RP/SP
Ryan Jackson, SS (College)
Cody Adams, SP (College)
Michael Zunino, C (HS)
Junichi Tazawa, SP (Japan)
Basically my question is, who should I cut loose, and who should I target as sleepers? If you suggest a player, I'll need to cut someone since I'm at the 75 man roster limit already.
I'm very interested in opinions on Xavier Avery, Carlos Gutierrez, Joshua Outman, Daniel Schlereth, James Simmons and Chris Withrow. If you have info on my college/hs players, that'd be great too.
Any help on "under-the-rader" type guys would be great!
Thanks!

as for getting in the league, we’ve had a pretty stable group of owners, and the commish usually recruits the new members…so i can’t promise anything.
thanks for the thoughts – i think i’ve done good work rebuilding my minor league system. i graduated joey votto, jeff francis, kevin youkilis, adam wainwright, ben francisco, kevin slowey, andy sonnanstine, and travis buck in recent years.
but i’m always looking for the next big thing…

no problem.
I’ve been a Cahill guy for a long time.
I’ve written about Holland and Brantley, and follow a lot of those others.
But seriously, mention me to the commish. Maybe someone will leave this offseason.

if you are looking to join a DMB Simulation league, email me at sirkit76@hotmail.com. It is looking like we may have as many as three openings this coming offseason (that have been hinted at. Could be more). We are a 30 team league with 25 man active and 25 man reserve rosters. All three of the expected vacancies are teams that either made the play-offs or just missed out on them this year (Oakland, Tampa Bay, and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim). Two of the teams were managed by wives of other GMs and they grew tired of it, and the husbands have been doing most of the work and are tired of it. We sim once a week and you can set all your depth charts and such before every Friday. You can check out the league website at:
http://nsbl2004.brinkster.net/index.htm
We try to keep the website updated well, but we do fall behind a little. You do not have to have the program, me or the commish run the sim (we alternate seasons). We run a 3 round draft each June/July that consists of any minor league, college, or other MLB Draft eligible players that aren’t on a roster already. We have a bidding style free agency with a fluctuating salary cap depending on improvement or regression in your team’s performance. Drafted players are under your control for 6 seasons (with an increasing salary every year you use them) and you have the option of signing them to a longer deal after their 4th season at a competitive price… but it keeps them off the free agency market. The rules aren’t completely updated, but most of the committee members can usually answer any of your questions in a timely manner.
Apologies for being late replying to your email. I am a procrastinator. So if it takes a few days, you know why. In the email just let me know the extent of your fantasy/simulation experience. I already know that you know baseball well enough, so you don’t need to try to prove that lol. I can then forward your email to the rest of the committee members.

I’m in a league with some of those guys (Jim Krug, Tyler, Ross, etc…), always cool to see more DMB leagues out there. It’s possible I could have openings as well Sully (guessing this is the same sully from PP). You can reply back or e-mail me if you are interested but I don’t really want to post the URL link since it isn’t open to just anyone and I’m not entirely sure these sorts of threads are even allowed to be honest. I imagine our structure is somewhat similar to Boxkutter’s:
- 30 teams
- 70 man rosters with both active and 40-man roster (are going to expand 5 every year)
- Free Agency
- 5 round amateur draft (is going to expand to 10 rounds eventually)
- Rule V draft
- team payrolls based off of team performance
- salary caps (different for each team but it’s set at 150 so only affects Yankees/Red Sox)
- revenue sharing system to increase parity
- luxury tax (like the cap, is only for amounts over 150 so really isn’t a factor but there to keep things from getting ridiculous)
I could go into more details but that should give you and anyone else interested an idea. Dues will most likely always be less than $10 dollars a year (they are $3.50 for next season). Kicking off our post-season right now and then need to recalculate salary/arb increases for all the players which takes some time but we should be ready for the off-season by November 1st. Like I said, really don’t want to post the URL but if you or anyone else is interested just e-mail me or let me know some other way.

Cody Adams
is no longer a college pitcher. He was a 2nd (i think) rounder of the Brewers this year, signed and spent the fall in the Pioneer League.
Hes a nice guy to have.. good arm, good athlete, good control

Drops
You can probably find better than these guys -
Outman
May
Withrow
Van Den Hurk
There are a few more questionable guys as well. I’m in a league with 30 minors and don’t make a habit of keeping relievers around.

I’m probably a little too attached to van den Hurk. I think it is cool he’s Dutch, and I found him on my own a few years ago. His K rates have always been nice and he was rushed…I always find a way to talk myself into him.
I agree on Lucas May, esp since I have Santana and Flowers coming up behind Baker, Laird, Ruiz and Buck. He’ll probably be cut in conjunction with my next claim.
Do you know if Outman is going to be stuck in the bullpen in Oakland or if he has a shot at starting next year? That would determine if I held on to him.
Isn’t Chris Withrow supposed to have a big time arm? However, if his ceiling is closer or big time set up man, then I can probably do better. Does anyone know where Withrow projects? Starter or reliever? Anyone know how his injuries have affected his velocity?

TJ? Google search confirms this. Blech. Good point, I’ll have to consider cutting him loose. Any other opinions on whether Garcia will be the same pitcher post-surgery?

Corey?
I’m not sure I understand the Corey Brown enthusiasm (not here, but in other threads). In a 14-team league, he’d be on my list of candidates to trade or cut, especially since you can apparently draft players who aren’t professionals in the US.

I’ve been hanging on to Corey Brown purely for his power potential. His walk rate isn’t terrible, but his strikeout rates and contact rates might not be good enough for MLB stardom. We’ll see about him going forward. If I can find a better power prospect that is sitting around on waivers, I’d consider a change.
