halman, hicks, flowers, revere, borbon, triunfel?

Which of these guys would you prefer to have on your fantasy team, or any other "sleepers" out there (well, not sleepers, but folks unlikey already to be picked up).  I guess i assume Flowers is blocked for now and triunfel will be a 3b.  Let's see, i like Jefry marte as well, and he's available.

Guys in my league read this site so may not even end up helping me, but i am curious. :)

Revere

I would go with Revere. This guys screams ‘FUTURE BATTING CHAMPION’ and has speed to burn which is great for any fantasy team. Halman is a great talent and potential 5 tool star but has a lot more risk then Revere.

thx billy

I should add that our league doesn’t give SBs equal rank with home runs, etc. (i.e., same points for 1st in SBs or first in home runs). We spun-off from an old Stats, inc. league which counts across a broad spectrum of categories, so you get points for SBs, but also deductions for caught stealing, you get more points for a homer than an SB, we count double plays, outfield assists, etc.

Seems to be some division on Revere, although Sickels and Kevin Goldtein had some very positive comments and he obviously had a nice season.

Its dependant on time frame for me

If you know you are going to need an extra trading chip, Borbon should be up around the ASB.

Hicks, Revere, Halman, Borbon, and Flowers are all high BABIP guys so its more of who you project to keep the high BABIP.

by laxtonto on Sep 26, 2008 1:50 PM EDT   0 recs

What's BABIP?

Just kidding.

Our league has gotten a lot more into building the farm system and as you can see most of the guys left all have some hair on them in one way or another. Lotsa other dudes abvailable too, so it is hard for y’all to gauge. I think Saunders still available, Burgess, Cody Johnson.

I think Micah Hoffpair (sic?) is available. :)

I went to the Mets game last night and the guy seemed like a lefty Albert Pujols. By the end of the game when he came up everyone in y section was like, dear god, here comes Lou Gehrig again.

I like:

In this order:

Halman (Future 30-30 guy? Move down though if strikeouts hurt you. Soriano comp)
Flowers (Great power potential. The new Max Ramirez?)
Borbon (Nice and close to the majors)
Revere (I just worry about him developing. Less room for error than most.)
Hicks (What the Hell right?)
Triunfel (Still so far away. Could make a case to move him up a spot or two)

nice to see you spreading the flowers love.

a few times actually, i’ve said the following about him, you know, trying to hide my overflowing enthusiasm:

if he’s an elite hitter, he’ll be an above average 1B.

if he’s a good hitter, he’ll be an above average C.

if he’s neither, he won’t make it, but that’s true for just about any prospect. i think the odds are about 50% that he’ll be a successful ML hitter, but i also think the odds are much higher that he’ll be a productive major league player.

i think that with his on base skills and with his power, he’s got a very good chance to be elite. i am very happy that i landed him when i did.

Flowers

I think that he may be better than Ramirez overall, but I’m not sure that he has the pure hitting ability that Max does.

I was referring...

more to the likelihood that neither will stay at catcher.

Having watched him this year

I think that Ramirez is a catcher. Haven’t watched Flowers enough to have a personal opinion on that, but I have Ramirez.

+1

i’ve watched him as well and think the same thing. rather, i haven’t seen any indication as to why he’s not. if i were the rangers i’d trade laird & salty and keep teagarden & ramirez. ramirez can play 1b, dh and spell tea once or twice a week.

I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

They're not terrible hitting comps either

Though Max Ramirez seriously stepped up his game this year, which Flowers will have difficulty replicating.

age?

what about the fact triunfel is 18 and Flower’s 22? At same level? Although triunfel obviously gets High Desert inflation. Carlos will be in AA at 19, when, say, jeter was in Sally league.

Oh well, we’ll learn more about carlos next year I guess.

i've seen this sentiment expressed before, and i've gotta say it's bullshit

just because a guy is younger, that doesn’t mean he has a higher ceiling or will be a better player. flowers has tremendous plate discipline and growing power potential, plus he plays passable defense at a premium position. that has quite a bit more meaning than another player being 4 years younger. in 4 years, truinfel might be just as good a player as flowers is now, but at the same time, flowers will be entering his prime, and likely still improving.

Just my thought

I don’t like Revere at all. No matter how great his bat control is, he just doesn’t have enough power to keep major league pitchers honest, and that will come back to haunt him as he moves up to higher levels. If you think he can even develop 10 HR type power (or even gap doubles power), then I can see taking the risk on the investment, but without even so much as that type of power, his absolute ceiling ends up being that of peak Juan Pierre.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

i don't know

revere has three elite skills, so i can;t imagine that he’ll be anything less than a platoon starter.

he’s a pretty easy player to project actually, since all 3 skills (contact hitting, baserunning, fielding range) are currently major league ready.

by variablesdont on Sep 28, 2008 5:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't doubt that

I just don’t think he has a ton of upside. Players who only have those three skills don’t tend to be all that great.

I'll give Hicks some props

Yes, the strikeouts are scary. But by all reports BH is very solid defensively, he’s got tremendous power and in previous years had good strike zone judgment. Now a fair guess would be that it’s better breaking balls he saw at a higher level that gave him trouble this year, so not saying to disregard his Ks this season, but he was also in a tough hitting environment.

I don’t know: I think I just like the defense and power combination at a key position. The flaws are obvious, but….there’s a lot to like, too.

aaron hicks

I was talking about Aaron. I should have specified, but nice to see someone’s opinion on the other Hicks.
