Player Options Status for all 30 Major League Teams - 2009
Most of you have probably had a conversation with a friend or on your team blog about which players were going to crack the 25-man opening-day roster of your favorite team, and which ones would get sent down.
And because this blog attracts such a great, sophisticated fan base, that conversation probably involved a discussion of the options status of some of your team's end-of-the-roster players. Whether or not a player has options remaining has an impact upon whether or not he starts with the big club or gets sent down to AAA.
This week I'd like to develop a list of players who will be out of options for 2009 on all 30 big league teams. If you happen to know players who only have one option left in '09, you could list that too. That's an ambitous project.
For me, one of the last remaining baseball mysteries on the Internet is the option status on players around the league. I wish there was a place where you could go to find that type of information, so that's what I'm trying to create here. As a community, we can create a great project, just like we did with Zonis' terrific Community Organizational Prospect Depth Chart, which required at least one hardcore fan from each team.
If you already know of a team blog that keeps this options information current, save us some time and please post it in the links!
If you need a refresher on option rules, you can find them here at Cot's Contracts.
You can list the info in any format, but for an example, you might write something like this:
Oakland A's
Out of options in '09:
Rajai Davis, Dan Meyer, Jack Hannahan,
Only one option year remaining:
Chris Denorfia, Dana Eveland, Matt Murton, Eric Patterson, Javi Herrera (2?)
2 or more option years left:
Richie Robnett, Carlos Gonzalez, Travis Buck, Aaron Cunningham, Petit, Pennington, Daric Barton, Landon Powell, Gallagher, Gio Gonzalez, Jeff Gray, Henry Rodriguez.
*You don't really need to list players who have 5+ years of service time, or guys who likely will never get sent down again. If you're unsure on a player when you categorize him, you can use a question mark after his name and someone else will hopefully clarify.

I think thats accurate. Maybe some other ranger fans can either verify or correct me.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Shealy
I am really interested in what happens with Shealy. Does anyone think he can be a decent 1B if given a chance to start on an everyday basis?

I dunno
He’s almost 30 now. I would have liked to have seen what he could do this year, as he was hurt in 2007, but Dayton insisted on seeing Ross Gload at 1B.
Shealy got off to a slow start in Omaha, but ended up well. I think he could still provide decent power off the bench, but I’m not sure I see him as a starter anymore. Probably a AAAA player, a nice bat off the bench for an NL club at best.

I didn’t include anyone with 5+ years service time, because those places can refuse options, though some (like Chris Capuano) have one or more left.
