Denard Span's power potential.
He hit 2 HRs today, and has more this season (9) then his first four seasons in the Twins organization combined (7).
As far as I can recall, no one has EVER projected him developing much power. Is it for real, and what's his ceiling, HR-wise?

I'd have to say he's hitting it.
I really never thought he’d hit 10 or more in a season. Who knew… I believe he’s pushing his power potential right now. I believe he tops out at about 8-10 annually, but Span could push 15-18 in a career year.

He's certainly performed better than this season than I'd ever have predicted.
I like Mike (Saunders)
Only if you specify which than that that that refers to.

15
Kenny Lofton hit 6 homers in 4 minor league seasons, then he topped out at 15, and hit 14 twice. I can see Span hitting 15 in a few years.
Span's future
OK, maybe he’ll hit a few HRs, but who is the real Denard Span? Lat’s say he gets 600 plate appearances next season…any predictions on his line?
winn
Lofton wasn’t meant as a comp. I was thinking maybe Randy Winn, although maybe his ceiling is higher given how well he’s played. Winn had some decent seasons though.
Span
I think that Span should be the Twins CF going forward. He was a former 1st round pick, and his defensive range, while not in Gomez’ class, is plenty good to play CF in the majors. Right now, he’s an above average fielder, and should get better as he gets experience. He’s also much more fundamentally sound with his routes, throws and fielding as opposed to Gomez, who is prone to bobbles, slipping down and airmailing throws to show off his gun of an arm.
Let’s also recall that Span had LASIK surgery this offseason, and all his rates (bb rate, k rate and line drive rate) have spiked this year vs. what he has done in the minors. When you consider that all those things improved as he moved from AAA to the majors, you have to believe that this is no fluke, and that his new visual acuity is the primary cause of his offensive gains. He’s a plus player right now offensively and defensively, and has a shot to have a Lofton without the steals type of impact on the Twins. That’s not all bad.
He’s for real.

Eating Crow
I think a lot of Twins fans are eating crow in regards to Mr. Span this year, including myself. I think many of us were thinking a AAAA or 4th outfielder at best. I have to believe that Span is for real. He ended last year really well in AAA as well as how he’s done so far this year so it’s more than just one season of improved performance. I really wish he could have done this a year ago though so the Twins wouldn’t have picked up Gomez. If the Twins had went for one of the Red Sox packages centered around Lester/Lowrie they’d be even deeper in good starting pitching and have their Middle Infield problems basically solved.
I don’t think Span will hit more than 10 a year on average but who knows, he is young and maybe his new found power is legit and he can become a 15-20 HR guy.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
If they went for one built around Lester
they would be in the playoffs. Though who knows if those deals were ever actually on the table.
Lester and Span are actually sort of similar… they both were liked for their tools/stuff over the performance… and both came in and blew up this year.
remember
…that span was really 3rd on the twins list of who they wanted to see take over the cf job this year….they also essentially gave up their starting shortstop, who was at least league average offensively and defensively to acquire jason pridie in the garza/young deal…..span really never showed any reason for twins fans to think he wouldn’t be a productive major leaguer, but the twins felt he was a season away….
regardless of how you look at it, the twins should have stayed after seattle…..the twins chose to pull out of talks with seattle…..santana wanted to rejoin his best friend silva in seattle, was willing to talk salary with them, and seattle had made public an offer similar to what they sent to baltimore Ireportedly adam jones, morrow, and tillman with rumors of tuiasosopo/triunfel being made available as an addition as well) for bedard, and they were reportedly willing to go even deeper than that….
but it’s not quite true that twins FANS did not like span….most twins fans preferred span if they were going to rebuild rather than getting anyone immediately ready to take over hunter’s spot….the front office saw something most fans did not, though, and thought they could compete again in 2008, so they went for immediate return, which is why they reportedly went for gomez over fernando martinez….

Santana to Seattle?
I remember hearing that Santana only wanted to go the the East Coast. It seems to me if the Mariners were really offering Jones and Morrow, the Twins would’ve taken that. Jones/Morrow versus Gomez/Guerra seems like a no brainer.

late run
seattle made the offers early when santana wasn’t interested in the west coast….he suddenly became very interested when silva signed in seattle….silva signed 12/21….by then, the twins had been negotiating for two months basically with other teams….
and i 100% agree with the talent comments….

hmmmmm.
I can’t disagree more with a lot of what you said.
Span never showed any reason for Twins fans to think he wouldn’t be a productive major leaguer
Until this year Span had posted an OPS over .700 only once. That was a .746 between high A and AA as a 21 year old. So to say he never showed any reason to think he wouldn’t produce is false. He’s always shown some good plate discipline but still didn’t look like he would be much more than a bench player until he turned it on late last year and did great this year.
As far as the Seattle trade, yah, great but just like the one I mentioned earlier with Boston, we really don’t know what’s been offered. Heck I even heard a rumor the Twins could have made a trade for Hamilton and given up a similar package to what they gave up for Delmon Young. Well that would be a no brainer but who knows if it was ever for real.
As far as twins FANS liking or disliking Span I guess I don’t know all twins FANS. However, I do know that many fans I do know and many Blogs I’ve visited were not very Pro Span until this year.
Also, the Twins are rebuilding they’ve just been lucky enough to field a decent enough team to compete in a weak division. If the Twins supposedly saw something in Span they wouldn’t have been so desperate to trade for a young CF prospect such as Gomez. Gomez had 140 AB’s in AAA and only 125 in ML, so he was far from a sure thing ready for the big leagues kind of guy. In fact he’s shown pretty clearly this year he wasn’t. I can’t say I thought Span was the better option at the beginning of the year but at least he had a full year of AAA under his belt. On top of that if the Twins were making moves to compete this year they probably would have signed a veteran CF like Lofton and kept Santana.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
overanalyzing
i never said that twins fans would have been elated with span or that he was the clear cut best choice in march….but he always produced a decent average, decent speed, and solid defense….for what the twins were needing in their lineup, he’d have done….and every blog (including ones linked from this site and also others) stated in november to keep span, sign a mike cameron type, or go big after a guy in the trade market (vernon wells and to a much lesser level juan pierre were rumored to be available in the offseason at that point…..the fans saw him as a future pirhana-esque player….
as far as trades, the seattle move was actually bavasi overplaying his hand (which came back to bite him in bedard negotiations) by commenting as his team pulled out in november on what the twins were expecting for seattle and why they wouldn’t be able to compete….he mentioned that he had led with a package headlined by those two….which basically made his bedard deal have to include at least one of those two….

Ceiling
Poor man’s Granderson and/or somewhere close to what the Tigers’ centerfielder is doing.
+1
Do people realize that Granderson hits .300 with 20+ HR with a lot of triples? That isn’t even mentioning his fantastic defense. Every time a team has a toolsy prospect who isn’t really great at any one thing, it seems he is compared to Granderson. People seem to forget that Granderson is an all star talent who is a true 5 tool threat. Many people at this site VASTLY underrate Granderson and perhaps more realistic comparisons should be made.

I read another post
I don’t remember where but it was about Carlos Gomez and comparing him to Curtis Granderson. If either one of Span/Gomez can come close to Granderson I would be thrilled. However, I just don’t see it happening.

As someone who watches the Twins a fair bit
I think a poor man’s Joe Mauer is a better comp for his hitting skills. He’ll hit for a bit less average and he doesn’t have the power potential that Mauer maybe, kinda , sorta supposedly has. In the coming years, I think Span’ll begin to walk more than he strikes out though not to the extent that Mauer’s doing it.
Mauer and Span just look similar in the box. They work counts, let the ball get deep on them, and don’t try to do too much with it. This thread was started by someone being surprised by Span’s two homer game, but having watched the game, I think the second homer was an accident. He had runners on second and third with nobody out. It looked to me like he was just trying to pull the ball in the air to move the runners up and it went over the fence. He’s got some pop and can yank one out if it’s the right pitch, but looking at HitTracker, all of his homers have been to right field and none of them went over 400 feet, so expecting more than 10 HRs annually seems a bit optimistic.
I think the increase in power this year versus former is a result of his increased selectivity. He’s swinging at better pitches, hitting them squarer and they’re going farther.
It’s tough to judge the future performance of any prospect, but Span is especially tough because we can’t trust his track record. I think he’s proven that he’s not just on a hot streak. He’s made some adjustments (mostly, I think, in pitch selectivity) that have rendered his pre-2008 stats pretty irrelevant. As for his predicted line? 300/380/430

Please just stop the comps. Just stop it. Now.

I think line of
.290/.350/.430 would be about what to expect if this is real with a peak of something like .300/.390/.460

with his speed, why isn’t he better at stealing bases?
