Young Lefties

Wanted to get your take on a couple of the minors best lefties not named clayton & david in b. anderson & m. bumgarner

Anderson has pitched well at higher levels A+ & AA has a very good K rate & and gets tons of groundballs.  Scouts seem divided with some projecting him as more of a 3/4 solid but not spectacular mlb starter and others arguing that his improved conditioning and development could lead to some upticks in his fastball velocity and when you combine that with his command you are looking at more of a 1/2 starter.

Bumgarner has dominated Low A ball this year but that is somewhat to be expected as a lefty with mid 90's velocity and good command.  Scouts seem to think his secondary pitches are showing good development and he has more polish and command than most expected.  Especially when you consider his age, his ceiling is quite high and could project as a #1 starter.

So which spec is your guy?  Brett or Bum?

MadBum

I realize that he his a lefty with great velocity in the SAL but is his domination really to be expected? The guy just turned 19 and is killing guys that are 2-3 maybe even 4 years older.

To be fair I would expect a good year out of the kid simply because of his handedness and velocity but look at his line.

11-3 1.70era 116.1ip 94h 18bb 125k

I mean, that line isn’t just good. It isn’t just really good. It is crazy stupid good. I think this kid is a Top 10 prospect.

I'm excited

I’m with you here, Woody—or is Cam? :) Mad Bum turned 19 just a week ago yesterday, and not only are his numbers fabulous, they have improved after a somewhat modest start. I saw a video of one of Mad Bum’s early starts, and while his secondary pitches were far from polished, they were much better than I expected.

The only thing I worry about with Mad Bum is his health. When I first saw his motion on his draft video, it worried me. I took some solace in Carlos Gomez’s good review of his mechanics. If Mad Bum stays healthy, it appears to me he could be QUITE good, fitting into the Giants’ rotation between Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain. That might make one heck of a top three.

You mentioned Mad Bum’s age, and I can’t help thinking that while many aren’t worried about Angel Villalona’s so-so numbers for Mad Bum’s Augusta team, Mad Bum is dominating—even though he is only a year and 12 days older than AnVil.

I don’t think we’re getting the bum’s rush here. I think Madison Bumgarner could become mad, mad good.

Angels

Trevor Reckling is an interesting arm in the Angels system that doesn’t get much attention. Really good breaking ball and a low 90’s FB w/ good movement from what I hear.

On the year: 2.97 era 127.1ip 102h 52bb 104k – 56% GB

Had walk issues early on in the season, but has really improved that aspect in the last couple months

Rohrbough called up to high A ball

Not really in the same conversation as these guys (yet/maybe ever) but still an interesting young lefty.

anderson

i read he lost weight and his fastball tops out at times 93/94mph…that should be more than enough velocity…since everything else is plus…two breaking pitches, control, etc

#1 starter?

I agree that Madison Bumgarner could become a #1 starter—but he’s going to have a hard time doing so with the Giants. :)
