Other frequent targets of Skip’s jokes included the Montreal Expos’ mascot Youppi,[8] New York Mets fans, professional wrestling, and the post game B-movie frequently shown on TBS during the 1980s. In one celebrated instance, in order to get back at Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist Ron Hudspeth for a critical column, Caray paid to have an airplane tow a banner above Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium during a Braves game which read, “For a good time, call Rona Hudspeth,” and included Ron’s actual phone number.[9]

Skip is also known for his tendency to identify the hometowns of fans who catch foul balls during Braves games in jest. Fans who reside in the metro Atlanta area are identified by a random suburb, though there is no legitimacy behind these references.

During Game 7 of the 1992 National League Championship Series, Caray delivered his most memorable line, as Francisco Cabrera drove in Sid Bream to win the pennant for the Braves:

" A lotta room in right-center, if he hits one there we can dance in the streets. The 2-1. Swung, line drive left field! One run is in! Here comes Bream! Here’s the throw to the plate! He is…safe! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win!...Braves win! They may have to hospitalize Sid Bream; he’s down at the bottom of a huge pile at the plate. They help him to his feet. Frank Cabrera got the game winner! The Atlanta Braves are National League champions again! This crowd is going berserk, listen!

Caray also delivered the call for the Braves’ World Series win in 1995.

I moved to Florida when I was 10 years old and pretty much grew up on Caray and the sad-sack Braves. Turning on TBS and hearing his voice made everything good again. You knew he was a homer but he was a homer for your team. As a little kid I actually believed him when he started to name those people who had caught foul balls. He must be a pretty popular guy if he knews all those people, I thought. LOL.

And like jrose said in his post, he had some pretty famous calls, too. I, in fact, will NEVER forget the bream race from second. The only guy slower, I think, is Mike Lowell (or maybe Brian McCann). I’d pay to see McCann race Lowell. :-)

nowhere near worst in franchise history as some have suggested, or any sort of “curse”, but the franchise has been seemingly struggling since the day ted turner sold away his rights as owner to aol…since then, the braves have seen their payroll diminish, right along with their minor league system, which has now affected the major league squad fully….the team has also lost some former greats recently…..

baseball is losing its golden voices left and right…..living in the midwest, herb carneal is one that will not soon be forgotten, nor the well known voice of bob casey in the dome who passed away last year…..the great voices are all nearing their end, and baseball has instead given us drivel like joe morgan and rick sutcliffe to replace those legendary voices…..
