the enigma corey brown

so this 07 draft pick, was touted as one of the better college OF's in that draft. some projected him as a 1st rd pick. fell a bit later. there were some makeup issues in his past. k's alot, etc. had a pretty good NWL in 07. moved to a tough hitting kane county, now the cal league. he's hit 16hr in 170abs there, but the walk rate/obp has plummeted cant hit lefties and still k's a ton. he does have 30hr total in his 1st full season at age 22. likely will be 23  in AA for 09. so he's an interesting power/speed combo in cf, but also has major flaws. would he rank among the group of 07 college OF's like borbon/kulbacki/payne etc? will he be exposed at higher levels? with likely gonzalez/unningham/buck/sweeney et in the majors around 09/10 would he project better than any of them? his grade for 08, maybe b/b-? what's your take?

we don't know

I don’t think Corey himself knows. I seen him a few times this year in the Cal League. He is pretty good in CF, he might even be able to stick there in a Matt Kemp way for his first few years.

He looks like he is playing around with his hitting approach, sometimes trying not to strike out, sometimes trying to kill the ball. He is making lots of subtle changes to his stance and swing, and some of them don’t work, but some of them work bit by bit. He doesn’t have a great two strike swing for fastballs, so that leaves him really exposed to slow stuff in the dirt. He also has problems when the pace of the game grinds down.

But my take is that he is trying to learn. That he is baseball smart and is figuring stuff out. He certainly has the tools.

I like him overall

He’s not a perfect prospect, but I’ve heard several people compare him to Mike Cameron with worse defense. That sounds like an appropriate type for him, and is a good player. It’s not a big star, but I’d take him over Borbon in a heartbeat.

in person

Having seen both Brown and Borbon in person this year, I’d have to say that Borbon is much more polished at this point from the hitting perspective. Borbon displayed good strike zone judgement and put the ball in play with authority.

Brown’s power is legit and his athleticism is quite impressive, but his swing does have some holes. Has a great outfield arm, saw him gun down a run at home.

Borbon projects more as your leadoff or #2 hitter whereas Brown looks more to be a middle of the order guy. Brown looks to be on the right track and if he gets his contact rate up and the k’s down he’s got all the tools to be successful.

He definitely has

legit power, something the A’s are in desperate need of. An outfield of Brown, Cunningham and Gonzalez looks pretty good to me. With Sweeney being the 4th outfielder. Hopefully he can cutdown on his K rate, but I definitely prefer him to Borbon. Although I think Borbon could end up being pretty good.

2010 can't come soon enough

30 HR is huge power

especially when you consider that his overall hitting environment has been neutral to pitcher-friendly (he spent more than half the MiLB season in the Midwest League).

He’s had an almost ridiculous K rate this year, though. He has to cut that down or he’ll be incapable of hitting .200 at the MLB level.

I know he’s a college prospect, but the A’s need to take it slow with him. I can’t see him in the bigs (and successful) before 2011. The athletic ability will keep and he desperately needs more work on pitch recognition. He probably won’t be a true CF, but Carlos Gonzalez looks like he IS a true CF so that’s not much of a concern.

in person vs. tim alderson

After seeing Corey again tonight in person vs. Tim Alderson, it’s looking like breaking balls are one of his main problems. Alderson threw curve after curve and Brown swung and missed at all of them.
