Billy Butler

Anyone notice that he's on a tear as of late?

Since the all-star break, he's at .306/.382/.571, after dominating the minors in his brief demotion. Is this the break out that KC Royals fans have been waiting for all season? And don't look now, but KC is making a belated push for .500. Red Sox fans can't be too pleased that Butler is on fire going into their series next week.

But...

Some discouraging comments made by Dayton Moore today, saying that Butler pretty much has no chance to be a 1B…No link, but it’s on Scout.com Royals forum…I’m a Royals fan, but I have some doubts about whether he ends up as more than Sean Casey at the plate, and a full-time DH. Not that Casey wasn’t a good bat in his prime, but just sayin’.

Don't worry...

...so much.

Billy Butler is going to be a better run producer than “The Mayor” Killer. By a LOT also.

Sorry to hear he can’t even play 1B but is there ANY difference in positional value between a 1B and a DH? Maybe a really good first baseman, but on average I meen.

The kid is GREAT, young hitting talent and there exists a position where he only has to do what he does best. Why can’t they just stick him there and let that be that?

The supposed lack of ability to play 1B should sorry KC fans more

with respect to Dayton Moore/Trey Hillman than Billy Butler, given that they’d rather, in a rebuilding year, use Ross Gload there than try to develop Butler’s positional ability.

I know that defensive metrics are still on their way, but a recent post at royalsreview notes that (in a small sample size), Butler’s RZR and OOZ are both better than alleged glove-man G-Load this year.

Not a Gload fan

but his ability to dig out errant throws is miles ahead of Butler, and has saved us more than a few times this year. That is for more important than range in a 1st baseman.

Get real

LOL. Man, baseball is full of people with hairbrain ideas, isn’t it guys?

offense

How many times has Gload cost KC with his bat? A .346 SLG from your first baseman doesn’t cut it. Basically, his defense should not prevent one of the future centerpieces of the franchise from playing.

a young manny to sean casey?

Great Question

Especially since he’s been starting to fulfill that promise in albeit a very limited sample size since the AS Break.

Butler is a future All Star – maybe as soon as next year. He should be playing 1B every day right now, to see if he can cut it defensively or not. Making him a full-time DH right now just handcuffs the organization into something that may not be necessary.

Just a matter of time.

Even his outs are hard hit balls these days.

Yup

low-average, good walk rate, growing power…

If you’re going to put a guy down, at least pick the right comp: Russell Branyan. They even play the same posititon.

Branyan strikes out at a MUCH higher rate than Gordon

That might be hard to believe…but. True.

Gordon also walks more.

I know

I was just saying that if the guy wants to put down Gordon, that Branyan is more his “type” than Sean Casey.

Put it this way...

If people can KEEP projecting some huge breakout into superstardom for the lines of Rickie Weeks and Howie Kendrick, surely Butler has a little time to do so.
