Fantasy Conundrum
Alright, my team has been too injury wracked to compete, so Im selling off pieces to build for next year.
10 team
AL Only
5X5
Dynasty (with salary cap rules that arent important to this question - suffice to say that rookies/young players make their actual real life salary and other players are got at auction)
Auction/Salary league with 133M cap
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am trading Javy Vazquez (who is under contract for 12M through 2010). Im also throwing in other assets who cant be kept beyond this season (Orlando Cabrera, who is an impending free agent, Alexei Ramirez, who cant be kept because he was an in season pick up, and Bartolo Colon, who is an impending free agent). I have four potential return packages on the table, and I am COMPLETELY STUMPED as to which one to take:
1) Carlos Gonzalez and a First Round pick (in the 2009 Minor League Draft)
2) Reid Brignac and a First Round pick
3) Nick Adenhart and a First Round pick
4) Ben Revere
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am strongly inclined towards offers 1 & 2. I love Revere, but the guy is lowballing me - though to be fair he doesnt want any of the other pieces, just Vazquez himself). Adenhart is a good bit below Brignac and Gonzo in my book.
As for the difference between offers 1 and 2... I just have no idea who to take. I think I like Gonzalez as a hitter more... but Brignac is a shortstop... and its sooooo hard to find a decent SS. Positional scarcity wise, I have to lean Brignac. They are both guys who are basically living off one great minor league season and have underperformed recently... also, by BP's top 100 they were ranked right next to eachother - 25 and 26 (with Adenhart 27!).
Another factor is I have the following outfielders under contract or own their rights for a long time: Ellsbury, Granderson, Delmon Young, Franklin Gutierrez. So Im not hurting for OFers. The only SS I have under contract next year is Asdrubal Cabrera... but I dont really view him OR Brignac as a solution for next season. Im definitely getting a SS in the auction either way.
I have no idea what to do and I need an answer tomorrow. The more I look at the two the more alike they look.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think Im going to ask for the deals to be added on to like this:
1) Carlos Gonzalez and a First Round pick and Chris Carter OR Brandon Wood
2) Reid Brignac and a First Round pick and Josh Fields OR Adam Lind
The bad thing is... if they both accepted... I still dont know if Id be able to decide!
HELP! PLEASE!
Thanks in advance

I’d take Option 1 in both cases. You already said you’re going SS hunting next auction anyways, so Brignac does you little good for a while. If you can somehow get Wood added to the deal, you really need to take it, in my opinion.

What's the difference in 1st round picks?
If it’s # 2 vs #9, for example, that might be enough to tilt the balance right there.
If they’re equal, I’d go with 1. You seem like you’d take 1 anyway if not for position scarcity, but if you get Wood added to #1, he may well be a better SS than Brignac anyway.

We have a draf t lottery
The 4 teams that dont make the playoffs are all 25% to get picks 1-2-3-4. The first two teams eliminated from the playoffs flip a coin for 5-6. The others play out, and since third place finishes in money we go by order of finish.
The team offering option 1 is in 7th right now, while the team offering 2 is 5… but the situation is extremely fluid. I do expect Option 2 team to finish ahead of option 1… but I dont think it will be significant. Either could easily go to the championship and f* everything up, too…
Is Wood really an option at SS for the Halos anytime soon…? I sort of thought he was viewed as a 3B now… I also fear being at the mercy of Mike Soscia’s mixing and matching…
I know Wood is not one of four prospects he considers “untouchable” and also that one of those four is Ian Kennedy… so I think there is a decent chance I can make it happen. i would certainly add things to the deal to make it work.

Again
I very much appreciate the help and opinions.
Im pretty torn over this. I like both these players and its a really close call. Gonna hurt either way.

Gonzalez
I’d take the Carlos option. I think he has more fantasy upside than Brignac, despite the position difference.

+1
Especially if you can get Brandon Wood thrown in… if he sticks at SS, it’s close enough to Briggy so that you won’t regret passing up on offer 2.

Even if it’s Carter instead of Wood, I think that’s fine too. I think Carter’s power will play nicely at higher levels.

I made the trade
I went for option #1.
I sent:
Javier Vazquez (12M through 2010)
Orlando Cabrera (impending free agent – can’t be kept)
Bartolo Colon (impending free agent – can’t be kept)
Remaining 2008 salaries for these players (to make the trade salary neutral)
I received:
2009 1st round draft pick
Carlos Gonzalez
Chris Carter
—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-
I appreciate all the help and I feel great about this trade now. Thanks again.
Wood was apparently not possible… we could have added on to make it happen, but the trade was getting too complex and unwieldy and I felt I would end up losing value.

My team
for anyone that is interested – which I realize wont be many, but what the heck…
10 team AL only. Salaries are either what we paid at auction or for younger players coming from the minors .35M. When guys reach arb its either .35 or what they got at auction or real life – whichever is highest. You may only keep players who stay on the same team. So if they leave in free agency for another team they must go into the auction. If they re-sign with the same team or are traded and stay you have the option of keeping them at their new real life deal or whatever you were already paying them for the real life years – whichever is higher.

I dont know what to do about
FDLS… Im saddened… but dont know if I want to drop him
Spoone… what the hell is going on with this guy????
With two first rounders, a 2nd, a 3rd, two 4ths and a 5th Im actively trying to move picks that I wont be able to use.

Oh one more thing
I was offered a list of four prospects to choose from to pair with the first rounder and gonzalez:
1) Chris Carter (who I chose)
2) Aaron Cunningham
3) Ryan Kalish
4) Trevor Crowe
Did I make the right decision??
My thinking was – no more f*ing OFers already. Which, if you look at my team above… well, you see where Im coming from there. Crowe was out. I like Kalish – but the chances of him being productive fantasy wise anytime soon are remote. When is he going to break the Sox OF? Is he even healthy yet? I also have a bunch of Red Sox already… and while I am a Sox fan – its getting to be too much of a good thing. Heck, I drafted Ellsbury and Pedroia as minor leaguers – and basically because they dropped to me and I thought they were being undervalued. Though all my Sox players are studs… which is nice. I do like Cunningham, but I figure Im getting a guy on the same team who is a better prospect at the same position in Gonzalez.
In the end, although I very much liked Cunningham, I went with Carter because of the raw power… that is the rarest asset and everyone always covets it in fantasy.
I ranked my preferences like this:
1) Carter
2) Cunningham
3) Kalish
4) Crowe
