Any stud prospects in NYP All-Star game?
The only players who really jump out at me in the NYP All-Star game are Brad Holt of the Mets and Travis D'Arnaud. Are they good prospects? Are there any other players who are gonna be in this game who would be considered top prospects? Please help me. Obviously, because I'm in a keeper league that has a 30-man minors roster, I'm looking for high-upside guys with an emphasis on pitchers.

Chisenhall and Norris are two nice prospects.
I also like Dan Jennings, but he doesn’t have great upside.

Pimentel has nice upside. More than you can say for most of that group.

Eric Berger
Lefty out of Jennie Finch’s alma mater Arizona. Had a lot of question marks surrounding his health after a subpar college season coming off TJ surgery. Fell to Indians in eighth round, and could be a huge steal. Through eight starts is 2-0 with 2.12 ERA, 9/41 bb/so in 34.1 innings. Really nice draft for the Indians this year, especially if they get second-rounder RHP Trey Haley signed.

I like your call on Berger.
Can he stay healthy? The Indians draft is looking better. They signed Bryce Stowall, who lit up the Cape Cod league this year. Rumor has it that Haley and Putnam are signed but not announced. The Indians like to dribble out their overslot signings, probably on the theory that Selig’s memory isn’t that good. Big question is the #16, House.

I like Travis D'Aarnaud

Likewise
While he may not be a studly prospect, I liken D’Arnaud to be one of the better catching prospects in the minors

Agreed. d’Arnaud was billed as a fantastic defensive catcher from the get-go, so to see a legit bat with it (.304/.368/.462 in a pitcher-dominated NYPL at the age of 19) is impressive.
And I can’t speak to his defensive ability, but I love Derek Norris’ batting line: .278/.449/.457 with a 44:37 K:BB ratio. Certainly worth keeping an eye on going forward.

Chris Schwinden
He isn’t a “stud” prospect, but he is a “solid” prospect absolutely dominating with an ERA of about 1.09 and striking out a ton of batters. His velocity is decent (90-92) and if he can sharpen up his breaking stuff he can easily become a #4 starter which is great from where he was drafted.

Venditte!
Novelty! Novelty!
I'll warm up with you anytime

In spite of the novelty, Venditte has legit stuff as a right-hander.

Legit stuff us a right-hander?
No he doesn’t. His fastball was topping out at 86 when I saw him getting by with okay location and the off-speed stuff wasn’t good enough to make up for the lack of fastball. As a lefty we all know he is bad his fastball was topping out at 79 and the breaking ball was terrible but he is fun to watch.

He throws harder than that, and will add velocity if he scraps the switch pitching. His movement is his bread-and-butter though. His stuff is comprable to Justin Duchscherer, low velocity but nasty nonetheless. Plus, he’s got lucky Kirk Rueter ears. Kids gonna make some strides.

So you are saying that the scoreboard was wrong and that he is throwing harder? I doubt it I would go with the scoreboard cause it was right on every other pitcher for comparison Holt always being 92-95 and hitting 96 so I don’t see how it was wrong on Venditte. And seeing as it was a home game for Venditte they would never make his velo lower only higher than it actually is.

I don’t know how hard he was throwing that night. I have seen him throw 88-89, and I have read several reports that have him touching 90-91 mph. He sits around 86-88, but he certainly isn’t “topping out at 86” on a regular basis.

KD Kang
has some upside as a hitter.
I’m a bit surprised Nick Barnese isn’t on the squad. 5th in the league in ERA, 2nd in strikeouts, and possibly a better prospect than any pitcher who actually made the all-star team.
Vogt early, Vogt often.

looks like he's injured

Chisenhall and Holt are #1 and #2
Chisenhall was a the 29th overall pick and during his freshman season at South Carolina he was already talked about as a possible 2010 top 10 pick before he got booted from the team for off-field stuff. As a 3b/OF/RHP he was named Baseball America’s mid-season Freshman of the Year before the off-field stuff put an end to that.
Hes a great pure hitter with who can spray shots from gap to gap. Hes got some power but might not be a guy to post huge HR totals. Hes a decent but not great athlete (drafted out of HS as a SS) but hes got a real good arm.
Holt was a projectable RHP who tapped into his production last fall and came out this spring sitting in the low-to-mid 90s for UNC-W and he maintained his velo deep into starts. In a NCAA Regional matchup against another local power armed prospect, Elon’s Steven Hensley – the Mariner’s 4th rounder, Holt was hitting 94 in the 9th inning.

Others
Shane Peterson is probably the 3rd best prospect in the game. He was a top 50-100 pick out of Long Beach St. Hes very athletic as far as 1b/OFs go and makes great contact and hits for high averages with lots of doubles.
Stolmy Pimental has a cool name and is some kind of far-off BoSox prospect but I don’t know much else about him.
Jeremy Farrell is a big dude with MLB bloodlines (Dad, John Farrell, is Indian’s scouting director). He played a solid 3b in college last year before getting hurt and hes got some power in the bat, though he wasn’t ever the kind of college hitter he could have been.
David Phelps was an ace for Notre Dame as a sophomore (1.81 ERA) and has a low-90s fastball but didn’t really have any command of his change or curve this spring… or so they say at least.
Jermaine Curtis is a nice player. Could be an MLB utility man.
Phil Disher entered South Carolina as a walk-on redshirt but developed himself into a starting catcher. Hes still old and raw but he has a plus arm and plus power.. a combo that could make him an MLB backup with some refinement. He definately shown the work ethic to make adjustments.
Chris Demons’ is old and a non-prospect (hes an Indy League vet who can’t hit) but hes supposed to be faaaast. Like 70 or 80 (on the 20-80 scale) fast. His Indy League coach said the only guy hes seen faster was Vince Coleman. He should be fun to watch at least.
Wade Korpi could maybe make MLB as a LOOGY.

Pimental
Has got loads of potential. Keep an eye on him.
by aspeninthewindow on Aug 13, 2008 2:54 PM EDT 0 recs
Holt
has promise with that great fastball. If his curveball stays on pace than he has a nice 3 pitches to work off of. I wish he’d throw the change to lefties more though.

Joel Carreno
I choose him. Good stuff, nothing but success so far in his career.
None of these guys are “studs” though.
