Red Sox pitching: From A(ardsma) to Zink
As per ESPN, Charlie Zink's getting the call-up to take Tim Wakefield's place in the rotation. He's 13-4, 2.89 ERA at Pawtucket.
"Charlie has been throwing real good," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said before Monday night's game against the Chicago White Sox. "I think that everybody felt like it was a breakout year for him."
It might only be a spot start situation (Boston's off the 21st and 25th, and Wakefield's only expected to miss two starts) but it's good to see him finally get the chance.

Byrd
Sox just acquired Paul Byrd. Odds are that he’ll take Wake’s spot over Zink, but Kudos on the headline.
The Dodgers won't win a playoff series until the Cool-a-Coo returns.
Long term...
you are probably right, but I think Zink gets this first start (tonight). I just checked and Byrd pitched 3 days ago (a complete game win, but only 94 pitches) so I really doubt that Boston will use him in today’s game. Of course, it’s always possible that they move the next two SPs up one day and just throw Byrd into the rotation for Thursday (or Friday) depending on when their games are.
But I do agree on giving kudos for the headline. I liked it too.

Zink
I would like to see the guy get a shot to crack the rotation. That being said, I certainly understand the Red Sox position and agree with the veteran pick up of Byrd. If Zink pitches well and has a quality start this evening, give the guy another start.
He’s no lock, but BartROLO Colon is not far from coming back either.
So I would have to think that Mr. Bucholz rotation spot is in jeopardy here one way or another.
So what are the Sox paying for Byrd’s services anyway?
Ripken.....thanks for the memories...
Pretty much nothing
Either a player to be named later or cash. I don’t mind either of them, as the PTBNL won’t be anyone really worth caring about, and the Sox have cash up the wazoo.

Buchholz
The more I think about it, Buchholz to the pen has a nice ring to it.

Buchholz
What’s the deal w/ this guy? I haven’t had the opportunity to watch him pitch other than an inning or so against the White Sox. He looked good the inning I watched but obviously he’s been struggling mightliy. Is the velocity down? command problems? What’s up?
I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?
Confidence
Confidence looks to be an issue with Buchholz right now. Byrd is taking his spot Friday night and I would not be shocked to see Clay starting in Pawtucket for a game or two. Buchholz is a work in progress. I think hitters have been laying off that killer curve and in turn have been smacking the fastball around. Watching Clay pitch, he looks like a deer in the headlights at times.

He needs to command and pitch off his fastball.
It looked like to me he can’t command his fastball (AT ALL) and thus is pitching off his offspeed stuff.

So much for Zink
4.1 innings pitched giving up 8 earned runs. Texas torture!

So much for everyone
Wasn’t exactly the best night to be on the mound, no matter who you were… Feldman coughed up 12 (to be fair, only 6 ER) in 2 2/3, Warner Madrigal and Hideki Okajima were the only ones who didn’t give up a run… everyone got hit.
But suffice to say, Zink did get sent back to AAA. C’est la vie.
