Aflac All American Game
I was wondering if anyone else watched the game and what their thoughts were. I didnt get to watch the entire game but I came away with these thoughts from what I did see:
The 09 draft class is loaded with pitchers.
6'7" LHP Tyler Matzek appears to be the head of the high school class hitting 93 consistently.
LHP Matt Purke looked equally impressive throwing in the low 90's and topping out at 95.
RHP Jacob Turner was throwing in the low 90's and recorded 5 strikeouts in 2 innings.
6'8" RHP Chad Thompson impressed me more than most. I imagine this guy will be a top 10 pick with as much projectability as he has already throwing in the low 90's and hitting 94. Hes really skinny right now so as he fills out and fixes his mechanics he should be throwing in the upper 90's.
RHP Mychal Givens really impressed me as well. I havent heard to many people raving about his pitching and i always here people talk about him as a SS. But he was hitting 95-96 consistently and topped out at 97. I even read somewhere they said he topped out at 98 but I did not see it. I dont think anyone in their right mind drafts him as a SS. HS kids throwing 96 are rare. I was very impressed with him and see him as a top 10 pick as well.
OF Donovan Tate was impressive as well and displayed some power. I saw him hit a bad pitch to the warning track.
Overall Im impressed with this crop and I personally believe this will be an excellent draft class more pitching dominant. Probably similar to the 07 draft.

pitchers
definitely some power arms. matzek and purke are just flat out studs. when you add those two with strasburg, you can’t go wrong at the top of the draft. grant green is probably the elite position player, but i don’t know how he fits in with the pitchers. alex white and kyle gibson are no slouches either.
i would have to add zach wheeler to your list. he was 94 with movement and a good breaking ball. he also has a perfect pitcher’s frame. keyvius sampson was also impressive. super athletic kid with 93 mph heat and a nice hook.

The Guys That Impressed Me...
In no order…
Zack Wheeler – Came out throwing harder than I had expected based on scouting reports, looked very good. His stock is surely rising.
Donavan Tate – I’ve read that he might have some contact issues, and obviously this isn’t a big enough sample to judge, but he just looked good all-around.
Mychal Givens – Had heard that he might be a decent bit smaller than listed, but didn’t look small standing next to Ozzie or playing. Still some questions about his bat, mostly power, but looked good at SS and looked the part of an energetic leader. The momentum seems to be for him to be a pitcher, has been since the PG National Showcase, getting two outs on two pitches in the mid-high 90’s didn’t do anything to change that. Next season will be interesting for him.
Slade Heathcott – Looked pretty good at the plate, even better on the mound. Very athletic and energetic, sorta reminds me of Ethan Martin…less hair.
Jacob Turner – Started out looking “eh”, but then put it together and looked the part of the top righty in the prep ranks.
Keyvius Sampson – Good velocity, good breaker, very athletic, looked good.
Matthew Purke – I missed some of his inning, but what I saw is what I expected from arguably the top pitcher in the class.
Matt Davidson – Short, quick, quiet swing with lots of power. The David Wright comp at the plate that was thrown out by I think Ozzie in the booth seemed to fit fairly well.
Tyler Matzek – Like Purke, I missed some of his inning, but again, pitched as expected.
Austin Maddox – Big, stong dude. Didn’t do anything exceptional at the plate, but nothing to really challenge the scouting reports and his numbers. Looked good on the mound too.
Didn’t pay much attention to Brian Goodwin, but he ended up winning MVP, and apparently has really been rising up the rankings lately, but right now I’ll plead mostly ignorant on him. The two huge pitchers looked pretty good too.

I did manage to see the game in spite of traffic.
I thought the pitching was ahead of the hitting but there were no big arms out there. I think that Wheeler overthrew. As a pitcher, he looked way behind Tyler Matzek, who was the best picher, and Matthew Purke. If they stay healthy, both should be top ten draftees.
Matt Davidson was the best hitter out there. He has a quick bat and loads up on every pitch. It also looks like he can stay at 3B. I was not impressed with Givens at the plate or on the mound. He has a good glove at SS but his arm did not impress me there either.
Donovan Tate shows promise. Good range in CF but questionable judgment. PLENTY of time to improve both. Has the makings of a hitter but has a long swing. I thought Maddox was the best righty of a solid but unspectacular group. Like most of the righties, he hung some breaking pitches that he got away with.
I think the West had two catchers, Stassi and Susac, that have very high upsides. Stassi looks more advanced, both as a hitter and catcher. Stassi may be close to Skipworth in draftability.
The quickest bat on the East belonged to Scooter Gennett. He does not project well because of his size but he might make a serviceable 2B. The MVP, Goodwin, was because of circumstances, although he actually hit the ball hard his last at bat. I say that because he was the only hard hit ball by the East except for a long fly by Tate. Heathcott, who lost the game deserved a much better fate.
If anybody is interested in a particular player, I have decent notes on most.

Why didnt you like givens on the mound?
by FishHead on Aug 10, 2008 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He only threw two pitches
and both were hit solidly. They sure did not look mid 90s and the gun often overreads when the ball is hit sharply. I would guess more like 88-92 as did the scout with me. Don’t get me wrong, he might be a top player but both Turner and Maddox probably had more speed.

Matt Blood From BA...
Said in his blog that the pitches were 95 and 97, one MPH off of the Fox gun.
I have to mention that Mychal Givens (Plant HS, Tampa) made an appearance on the mound in the eighth inning. A top two-way prospect, Givens is both a righthanded pitcher and a shorstop. He entered the game with his team (the visitors), losing in the bottom of the eighth inning. Givens faced two batters and threw only two pitches—the first of which was 95 mph, drawing a fly out to left field, and the second 97 mph, leading to a groundout. Givens was then removed so that Austin Maddox (Eagle’s View Academy, Jacksonville, Fla.)—who is also a legitimate two-way prospect—could get a shot on the mound. It was a precautionary measure to guard against the case that if the East didn’t score any runs in the ninth inning, the bottom half of the ninth would not be necessary and Maddox wouldn’t have gotten his chance. Regarless, Givens needed only two pitches to registered the highest radar gun reading (97 mph) that I have seen this summer on the high school circuit.

Also...
He had the top gun reading at the PG National Showcase, 95 MPH.
Matt Blood also had basically “Best Tools” breakdown in the blog the day before the game, under “Strongest Arm” he wrote Maddox has the strongest, but followed with…
Also from the East team, Givens has been clocked up to 96 mph off the mound and is able to use that arm strength while playing shortstop.
Then under “Best Fastball”
As stated earlier, Givens has been clocked up to 96 mph with his fastball—a pitch that also boasts late sinking life.

I know about the gun readings. I have also
read what Blood reported. IMHO, he got some things and missed badly on some. Let me pose a question of logic. There were a lot of strikeouts at the game. And the position of Matt Blood, and you apparently, is that the fastest fast ball in the game was hit solidly on each pitch he made while lesser fast balls were missed with regularity. I am not saying that I am right. All I am saying is that I did not see the speed the gun measured. Radar guns have come a long way but the best judge of speed and movement is the batter.

As Long As You're Not Saying You're Right...
=)
My point is that there is past performance to backup the gun readings.

Not even arguing what the writeups say
on Givens. I am just saying that it sure did not look 95-97 to either of us and we were in great position. Hey deezle, I hope it doesn’t shock you but all these kids sit dead red on every pitch. HS batters are not known for their discipline and it explains why so many hanging breaking balls were fouled off or missed.
by sdtribefan on Aug 11, 2008 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Readings were legit
but Givens didn’t have any movement on either pitch, they were straight as an arrow, and the first kid was obviously sitting dead red. If a kid can pump 98 MPH fastballs at 17 years old, then MLB teams are going to be drooling over him next June whether or not he currently has movement or good secondary stuff.

i didn't see the gam
but Given’s FB is generally described as having great sinking movement

Walsh and Morris
I’m very interested in your take on the 2 kids from Coppell Texas, CF Jacob Morris and C Jonathan Walsh, both of the West team. I’v actually been fortunate to play with both of these kids for the past few years and I am curious how “outsiders” view the both of them. I’ll be happy to share my own opinions if anyone cares. Thanks

I think Walsh only caught an inning or two but don't take that to the bank.
He probably would have looked better if it weren’t for the catching competition on the West. I see some talent at the plate, including power potential but I thought his stroke was too long and not real quick. I woud project him somewhere in the first four rounds but he might move up because of his projection.
Morris looks like his best chance of making it is CF. His bat does not look like power but he has some speed. From what I saw, his speed is good enough now but legs are hardest to project at this age. My compadre projected 5-7 but he might be higher. I just couldn’t get a great read.

no big arms?
were we watching the same game? that was the most velocity i have ever seen in this game, and i would say matzek and purke are the best prep lefties since kershaw 3 years ago.

If you were there, we were.
Don’t know how many AFLAC games you have been to but both Michael Main and Robert Stock hit the upper 90s and there were several pitchers who hit the mid 90s two years ago. Most of them were throwing for the gun. I agree that Matzek and Purke are among the best LH Pitchers in the last three years. I believe I said as much. Neither of these guys are flamethrowers. IMO, Turner had the best fastball followed by Maddox. Turner probably has more upside but both got away with hanging breaking balls.

power pitchers
i didn’t mean in terms of one or two guys throwing 99 like main and stock. i meant in terms of nearly every pitcher that came out there was throwing 94. this high school pitching crop is much stronger than last year’s group. i don’t think they are in the ‘07 category, but it is one of the strongest groups in a while outside that class. i would put it ahead of ‘06, ‘05, ‘04, and ‘03 just off the top of my head.
by fewgoodcards on Aug 11, 2008 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I like this class as pitchers. I think if you look back
at the ‘06 class you will find a better set of arms even if you exclude Main and Stock. This class had some pitchers who didn’t try to muscle it up at all. ‘06 was loaded with guys who tried to muscle it up so much they threw it straight. ‘07 seemed to split the difference in both respects. In summary, I think the better arms belonged to ‘06 and the better pitchers to ‘08 but that is just my opinion.
by sdtribefan on Aug 11, 2008 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
'06?
that class was solid, but there is no way i would put it over ‘07. kershaw stands out and makes it legit, but kiker, jeffress, drabek, and willems is no where near porcello, parker, bumgarner, beaven, main, alderson, withrow, and the rest of that group. you also have to include guys like matt harvey and kyle blair in that group. i know he wasn’t american, but phillipe aumont was also a stud high school pitcher in that class.

Some observations
Both Matzek and Purke were clearly impressive, i think your talking about guys that are locks to go in the top 10 in the draft. They key with them is they seem to be sound mechanically and know how to pitch rather than throw.
Personally, i really liked Heathcott both on the mound and at the plate. Ability to go oppostie way to drive in the first run of the game is definitly something you like to see from a young hitter. Honestly i dont really see the Ethan Martin comparisons, i can see Mike Hampton as a better comp.
Once Turner settled down he was just throwing bullets out there and looked like he was doing it with ease. Zack Wheeler looked that same way as well. Donovan Tate will be an interesting situation when he makes the decision between football and baseball.
Overall i think 09 will be a better high school class than 08 was. Spring will tell if it can match up with the 2007 class

The Ethan Martin Comp...
Comes from him being a big, (country)strong, athletic, high energy two-way player, nothing mechanical. I really liked Martin going into last the game last year, I knew less about Hethcott coming into this game, but like him quite a bit after watching him.

Yeah, I overlooked Heathcotts bat
because I think he is a pitcher. Talk about hero to goat! If he makes that PO he might be MVP.

Goodwin
the MVP of the game, I saw play recently. He has great defensive tools and can hit some but his bat isn’t great. I’m not even sure hes the best player on his travel team, that isn’t a criticism of him though. Hes a really good ballplayer and athlete. Definately worth following.
His travel-ball teammate Will Meyers is a bat to watch. Hes a 1b/3b with a solid arm who shows some really nice plus power during batting practice.
Keep an eye out for 2010 or 2011 OF DeSean Anderson. Hes not very big at all but hes got a muscular, athletic build and can light up BP with some real long shots despite his young age and lack of size. He can run and throw too. He didn’t really translate his hitting ability to game situations when I saw him but hes still plenty young and plenty talented
The SS on that team, Levi Michael, has a nice gap-to-gap line drive hitting kind of game. Real solid swing that goes right to the ball. Hes got decent but unspectacular middle infield tools.
