Freeman vs Heyward

Here are there respective lines.

Heyward

379 AB 118 H 72 R 9 HR 19 2B 5 3B 46 RBI 41 BB 68K .311 avg .375 obp .459 slg. 15 SB 1 CS

Freeman

407 AB 128 H 55 R 29 2B 5 3B 17 HR 79 RBI 36 BB 66K .314 avg .372 obp .536 slg. 4 SB 5 CS

Freeman is one month younger and Heyward is hitting 3rd and Freeman 4th for Rome.  Heyward is generally considered a top 10 prospect.  So the question is...where does Freeman rank.   Heyward obviously has more speed buy otherwise they don't look that different.  Freeman is obviously showing considerably more power.

Looks like Heyward

has better pitch recognition… I like that BB/K ratio…

Not really much of a difference...

Heyward 41 BB/68 K
Freeman 36 BB/66 L

I think both are showing exceptional plate discipline for their age in a full season league.

BTW they both just turned 19.

Where does Jesus Montero fit in?

.310/.358/.463 with 12 homers while playing half of his games at catcher. Plus he’s 2.5 months younger than Freeman.

Heyward v. Freeman...

I don’t think Montero fits in there.

Luckily, I own BOTH Freeman and Heyward in my league with minors!

By seasons end, Morrison, Freeman, Anderson and Villalona will be the top 4 first base prospects in the game.

Obviously Freeman is helped by Heyward hitting behind him. Heyward certainly doesn’t have that luxury with Cody Johnson and his 150 or so K’s being the next best hitter on that team.

Heyward has been as high as #5 on mid-season prospect lists and I haven’t seen him out of the top 10 on any.

I would guess that Freeman comes in at around #60 or so. The numbers are great, but Heyward has more speed and plays better defense at this point. Also, Heyward had a ton of hype entering the season while Freeman had none further separating them in value.

Re:

Actually Heyward would be helped by Freeman batting behind him. Heyward bats 3rd while Freeman bats 4th.

my take

I love both these guys, but I like Heyward a bit better because he will have more defensive value. Offensively they are very close.

freeman

B+ at least. A- may be possible depending on final numbers and scouting reports.

Brian Dopirak, anyone?

I'll warm up with you anytime

by ufoboy90 on Aug 3, 2008 1:00 AM EDT   0 recs

No...

Dopirak was a full year and a half older in A ball when he hit 39 homeruns and he struck out 123 times in 543 at bats. Freeman has only struck out 68 times in 401 at bats.

I see very little to peg Dopirak’s future to Freeman.

I take Heyward because of position value. Even if they are the same potential-wise (which they aren’t) Freeman’s bat won’t make him a truly elite first baseman while Heyward’s could make him an elite right fielder.

Something to keep in mind

Last year, Freeman played 59 games in rookie ball. Heyward, because he was an above slot signing, only played in 12. Heyward out OPSed Freeman in every month except July when Heyward put up a 672 and Freeman put up a 1128. I seem to remember Heyward sitting and DHing a fair bit in the past month, so it’s possible that he has run out of gas a bit in what is his first professional season. It’s also possible he’s been dealing with an injury.

Heyward plays a tougher position, has much better speed, and what looks to me like an equal bat, so if I had to take one, it’d be tough to justify not taking him. But I suspect Atlanta’s very glad they don’t have to choose just one.

Heyward

Heyward is the better prospect at this point because of positional value and defense.

But if you want to ask strictly about the bat… well, a lot of Heyward’s power is still projection at this point whereas Freeman seems to have already had a fair bit arrive. I think it’s close to a push but I’d probably give Freeman the slight edge when talking strictly about the bat.

Both are really good looking prospects, though. A lot will be told on how they do in High-A and AA over the next couple years, but as a Braves fan, it’ll be fun watching them develop.
