MVP/Cy Young Question
A friend of mine brought this up to me a couple days and it got me (and him) wondering. With Volquez being a leading Cy Young Award candidate in the NL, and Josh Hamilton being a top MVP candidate for the AL, has there ever, in the history of baseball been a pitcher traded for a hitter and both go on to win the most coveted award the next season?
I would look myself, but I know many members here are much better at finding things like this. Also, I think it could bring up some interesting discussion.

The Answer Is No
Not in the very next season…
I heard the announcers for the Rangers talking about this a few weeks ago and it hadn’t happened. I beileve there have been a few trades that involved MVPs and Cy-Young Award winners but never both in the next season…
Oh
And I voted neither. I think Volquez will get tired (which he is already showing signs of) and not be as good in the second half and the voters will have trouble giving the MVP award to a guy on a .500 team. I do think Hamilton has a better shot than Volquez if I had to pick one…
Both have "tired"...
Volquez, past 28: .261/.338/.365 against
Hamilton, past 28: .256/.354/.366
Not that MVP or CY voters would have any concerns for stats like “on base” and “slugging”, but it will be interesting to see what happens in the final 2 months with these two guys. Neither has been especially “special” in the past 4 weeks.
wow
very evenly matched poll thus far….great discussion question!
The Giants need to sign Harry Doyle.
Neither wins
Both will fade a bit, but more importantly, the writers will pick players from teams that make the playoffs.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
A-Rod?
Didn’t he win one with the Rangers?

If Hamilton
can recover from a subpar month or so his poor team won’t hurt him in the MVP race.
Being on a winning team is important in the MVP race but if your numbers are loud enough, and a 155 RBI pace and at one point being in a Triple Crown situation, are more than enough, they will overshadow your team situation.
Plus, part of the hit of being on a bad team is the lack of pub but everyone knows this isn’t like Hanley dominating for the Fish in front of no one and no cameras. Hamilton has gotten as much pub as a guy can get this year.
Mitchell & Davis
Closest I know of is Kevin Mitchell and Mark Davis, who were National League MVP and Cy Young respectively in 1989. They were swapped as part of a seven-player deal between the Giants and Padres in July of 1987.
