Cahill tonight...

Pitching tonight against Arkansas. So far: 8ip 0 ER 10k 2 hits and 1 walk.

Not bad. He seems to be keeping up the high K rate against better compitition. Any chance he'd be brought up to AAA this year?

i'm impressed

and if he continues to pitch like this, then there’s at least a chance.

On another note: does anyone know why Brett Anderson had his start skipped?

The whole Midland rotation was

redone in order to get people in line for futures games, since Cahill/Anderson will be in it.

When will then be now? Soon.

On a related note

Gio’s up-and-down season continues. As of this writing, he has a 1-hitter through 8 innings.

And for weirdest line of the night, Scot Hodsdon of Kane County tonight lasted only 2 innings, allowing 5 hits and 7 runs, 0 earned, 0BB, 0K.

Gio still has his great

K rate going. Walks up a lil too much but his BABIP is way high and should come down along with his ERA.

When will then be now? Soon.

I actually disagree

I think he is a bad pitcher at high altitudes because his curveball hangs in the thin air.

Good thing there are no high altitude parks in the AL…

going further

mazzaro/hrod/simmons were dominant in their last starts too

i’m optimistic a couple of the A’s prospects will be ready by some time in 09, beane needs to trade blanton asap

by Asfan4ever723 on Jul 5, 2008 3:30 AM EDT reply actions

What will Blanton get you at 5-11?

Even after last night, Blanton’s trade value is too low relative to his actual value to get what he’s worth. We know he’s really a good pitcher, but he won’t draw near the return compared to what he would have in, say, December. The soonest I’d deal Blanton is this off-season, and that’s if he really turns it around in the second half.

Rotoworld is reporting that, should he keep dominating Midland, Cahill could be a rotation option as soon as this summer. Between not even tasting AAA yet and never throwing this many innings, I have a hard time believing that. The soonest I’d see him in Oakland is next June, though at this point it wouldn’t start his arby clock, so maybe September I suppose.

Over on AN, the discussion is that nine of the A’s top 10 prospects in 2009 could be pitchers – everyone but Sean Doolittle, who I’d rank 7-9 in the system. ANers have commented how young arms can easily be turned into young hitting via trade. How would you do so? Who would you trade, and for what type of position prosect? Although his ERA is still sky high, I’d take a younger SS or 3B for Gio from a team that needs a near-ready arm. Who would you trade and for what?

what about

Aaron Cunningham, Jemile Weeks? It’s a pretty loaded system.

Weeks is not technically in the system yet

Assuming he signs, he’s a borderline top 10 guy.

That said, Cunningham and Corey Brown are easily top 10 guys for me. The Ks are a big issue for Brown, but he has Sizemore/Granderson type upside.

Brown needs to move up

Hes tearing up Kane County and thats a pitchers league. He needs to move to the Cal league to beef up those stats.

beane needs to bring his price down

on blanton. i’d take one top SS/3b prospect + a couple lower tier/non 40 man players. so you’d rather trade potentially 6 yr of gio vs 2 yrs of blanton, who will get more expensive? i also dont trust harden, once CC is traded hopefully that influence his market. but if beane is sold on this team, i could see 2nd tier guys like a mazzaro/cunningham etc maybe traded off for a solid bat

by Asfan4ever723 on Jul 5, 2008 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

If the Brew Crew don’t get CC, Blanton could fill out the bottom of the rotation and is playoff tested. Would say Escobar and another prospect (not named LaPorta, Gamel) in mid tier level due?

Or how about Gamel/Escabar/Jeffress for Steeet & Blanton.

Since BoCros is back on the DL and a FA after 2009 Escabar could be the heir apparent.

by Bud Light on Jul 5, 2008 6:06 PM EDT reply actions

My opinion...

I think Gamel should be the piece they should try to trade. With him being a huge defensive liability, I think trying to trade him to an AL team who can put him at DH would be a smart move. I just don’t see where he plays on their major league squad. LaPorta should be untouchable for them right now, but Gamel and someone like GIllespie and one of their catching prospects (Salome or Lucroy) should be the package they put together. Would this be enough to get a pitcher like Sabathia though?

not a great but solid by mazzaro

7in/3r/3k’s

his peripherals dont support a 2.29era in texas league. but he has a power sinker and pitches to contact. solid for a 21 yr old in AA. he’s been a nice surprise among the 2nd tier prospects and may rank just outside the top 10 or so. we’ll see maybe nice trade bait.

His peripherals don't support a 2.29

but his FIP of 3.36 is tied for best in the Texas League. He’s having a damn good year, anyway you look at it.

BA

Cahill is ranked 13th in BA’s mid season top 100 and is the 5th pitcher.
