Cashman Proving His Value

I know Ca$h has gotten a lot of heat in the past for some bad signings (Igawa, Pavano), but he's done a fantastic job boosting the Yankees this month.

Trading Jose Tabata, Jeff Karstens, Daniel McCutchen, and Ross Ohlendorf for 1 1/2 years of Damaso Marte (team option this year) and Xavier Nady, both of which will net two draft picks.

Now he trades RP Kyle Farnsworth (likely a Type B) for C Ivan Rodriguez (Type A).   Both will be free agents after the season.

He also picked up Richie Sexson for nothing.  (Lefty masher if anything)

EDIT: ONE MORE TRADE

Yankees acquire A+ 2B Matt Cusick for RP Latroy Hawkins.  Is Houston trying to lose?  Cusick was rated their #29 prospect by BA this off-season and probably will be a little higher with his nice performance this year.  By the way, Hawkins was DESIGNATED FOR ASSIGNMENT a few days ago.  (http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/C/Matt-Cusick.shtml)

Type A?

.295/.338/.417 for a catcher who’s gonna be 37 this offseason and been behind the dish for over 2100 games doesn’t exactly scream Type A to me. I think the Yankees will be lucky to get a sandwich pick for him.

He is

Tim Dierkes over at MLB Trade Rumors linked to a guy who broke the Elias Ranking formula.

The Pudge trade was brilliant on Cashman’s part… I swear we coulda gotten more for Pudge though.

I don’t think any of that goes into the equation.

Allow me to restate myself

With all of the mileage that he has at this point in his career, I’m not convinced that he’ll maintain the necessary performance to be a Type A free agent.

Cool?

Doesn't Position Matter?

Isn’t status based on how he compares to other similar-positioned free agents? (I may be wrong). With a really, really weak catching free agent class, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s an A.

position matters

but he is compared to all catchers, not just free agent catchers. So the depth of position in free agency doesn’t matter.

arbitration

But they have to offer him arbitration.

Agreed

If he can pull off a deal for another starter without giving up a top asset, it’ll have been a solid job. He’s kept Hughes/Kennedy (though I’m not particularly high on Kennedy). The young arms (Betances, McAllister, Heredia and so forth) haven’t been touched. Austin Jackson and Jesus Montero are still there.

Azantor – a lot of speculation seems to be Type A for Ivan. There’s that Eddie Bajek guy who has been trying to figure out the formula and he seems to think Pudge is Type A.

% thrown out?

Anyone know what % of runners he’s been throwing out this year? Molina was doing a nice job in that regard.

Ripken.....thanks for the memories...

by bodyiq on Jul 30, 2008 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

36%

Pudge has thrown out 18 of 50 base runners so far this year.

Yankees 2009 Draft Possibility

1 Regular 1st Round Pick (Late-Mid 20s)
Losing Ivan Rodriguez (2 Picks)
Losing Andy Pettitte (2 Picks)
Losing Mike Mussina (2 Picks)
Losing Bobby Abreu (2 Picks)
Losing Damaso Marte (2 Picks)
Losing Jason Giambi (2 Picks)
—-—-—-—-—-—-—-——
13 First Round Picks

Clearly not gonna happen, but I found that very interesting.

you do realize

to get draft picks, you have to offer arbitration… Theres no way Giambi gets offered arbitration because he will take it.

Pettites going to retire or stay a yankee…same with Moose. I dunno, all those players are super old and teams are becoming leary of giving away draft picks for old broken down players.

Marte has a TEAM option

come on guys. If the Yankees accept (and they likely will) he won’t net them two draft picks for 2009. at more then 6 million per, it’ll be difficult to see them accept arbtritration.

sign FA

I am sure they will sign a FA and lose their own 1st round pick.

Farnsworth

I think Farnsworth is closing by the weekend. I don’t think DET management or Leyland agree to this unless that was the plan. To give up Pudge, who is a valuable veteran but also in the twilight, for a reliever that has proven to be more effective than any that the Tigers currently have in the pen – I actually think this was a good deal for the Tigers as well as the Yankees. The Tigers probably were not going to resign Pudge and the prospect of possibly solving their closer issues for this season. Also, Cashman said he never thought of the deal – the Tigers called him and presented it. It was a no-brainer for him I think.

by YZZ on Jul 30, 2008 7:34 PM EDT reply actions

I can see that

The CoPa helps solve Farnsworth’s longball issues. Of course, he’s not really good on back to back outings, but he’d be passable as a closer. Maybe we could use a closer platoon of him and Zumaya to prepare Zoom for the role next year…

And now Hawkins was traded too!

Talk about miracles! If you’re gonna praise Cashman, this has to rank high on the list:

cashman

he was always a good GM, he was just handcuffed by his owner pushing for big name free agents in the past….these recent deals have yielded solid veterans with a few years left and kept the studs in their system under their control….to solidify that team without having to move joba, hughes, or kennedy is tremendous…

by biggentleben on Jul 30, 2008 9:28 PM EDT reply actions

On the Pudge draft pick stuff...

You only get picks if you offer arbitration, and I don’t think there’s anyone out there who’s going to sign Pudge to a deal where they also have to give up a draft pick. More likely, he accepts and the Yankees have another expensive, old catcher on their hands. Except if this one breaks down, you can’t DH him.

by mraver on Jul 30, 2008 11:54 PM EDT reply actions

no arb

I don’t think they will offer him arbitration. He is not worth the $13M he is making this year.

by RangerMad on Jul 31, 2008 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Hold on

Some idiot (Drayton McLain anyone?) is going to offer Pudge a multi year deal just because he’s Pudge. And he’d be an idiot not to take it, too. So offering arbitration may be a rational move.

by David Tokarz on Jul 31, 2008 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Doubt

While a bigger fool may indeed come around, risking a $15M+ arbitration on an aging catcher probably doesn’t make sense, even if the risk is only 10-15%.

see maddux, greg

braves were assuming someone would come along to sign maddux that season as well and ended up stuck with a huge arby paytag and had to make the infamous millwood for estrada deal that was really the first step of the end of the braves’ run….

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
