Dodgers Catching Prospect: Carlos Santana

He is breaking out At Inland Empire this year.

Some info on him.

age 22

Switch Hitter

listed at 5'11 170lbs from Santo Domingo in the DR.

Season numbers: 273 ABS 42 XBHs 53bb 44k  319/426/564

He is obliterating the California League in every way possible offensively. He is new to catching, a converted 3b (dodgers like doing this with athletic infielders). He has always shown very good plate discipline in his minor league career but this is the year he is putting everything together.

What are the thoughts of the community? Elite catching prospect? Potential offensive force? California League facade?

California League

Beware the breakout year in the California League. Not saying he is a bad player, but I want to see him doing it at AA too, I trust those numbers more. He had a line of 223/318/370 last season. To me, that usually means either this season or last season is an anomaly, and since he is in the CL this year, I would guess this is the anomaly season.

Many players over the last few years have “broken out” at the Cal League, just to fall back down once they move on.

It’s nice this player is hitting well, but a 22 year old hitting well in the Cal League is not something to get too excited about, IMO.

Last year was the year they transitioned him to catcher. Naturally, learning a new position really put a dent in his ability to stay consistent at the plate. He still displayed an excellent k/bb ratio last year and has only improved on it this year.

I would be more skeptical of him and chalk it up to a California League illusion if his plate discipline wasn’t so good.
