Reid Brignac has been called up.
Jason Bartlett injured himself sliding into 3rd yesterday, and since there are no pure SS's on the Rays roster, The Rays sent down Talbot to bring up Zobrist, and the Cajun God of Baseball, Reid Brignac. Very interesting that they called him up, I'm interested in seeing if Reid gets the significant amount of playing time.
I'm sad to see Talbot was only in the Major Leagues for a day without even getting to throw a pitch. I'd be very disappointed if I were him.
We'll see if Brignac starts on friday.

i don't like the move really
I figure Talbot’s one of their most MLB-ready pitching prospects and I don’t think he has much more to glean from pitching in the minors, since he doesn’t have the crazy upside of many of their other pitching prospects and this would be his best chance to make a case to stick. But now that they sent him down and called up Briggy, i really think Brignac should be receiving the lion’s share of the playing time, with Zobrist maybe coming in late in close games for defense. I hope the Rays don’t let Brignac rot on the bench like the Angels did with Wood last year, and that they have some patience so Briggy does not get thrown off when Bartlett comes back and he returns to the minors.
Hey fish, leave those kids alone!

bartlett
guy has horrid luck….he hurt himself in the past with the twins while in the midst of a hot streak….now he’s in the midst of another hot streak at the plate (finally, for his fantasy owners), and he goes down….

Interesting note that may or may not mean anything, but I threw Brignac’s stats into the minorleaguesplits.com MLE calculator (AKA mrkupe’s new favorite toy), and then translated them into performance at multiple levels. The findings:
Real Brignac 2008 (AAA): .265/.312/.431
Imaginary Brignac 2008 at:
Visalia (A+): .329/.393/.555
Montgomery (AA): .276/.329/.457
MLB: .230/.272/.365
In 2006, Brignac played at Visalia and put up a line of ..328/.384/.560. In 2007, Brignac played at Montgomery and put up a line of .260/.328/.433.
In other words, in terms of actual production at least, Brignac is essentially the same player in 2008 that he was in 2006 and 2007. He hasn’t declined but he hasn’t really developed over the last three seasons, either. And with a 3 year statistical sample (I’ll throw out his 2005 in the Midwest League), I feel relatively confident that the Brignac we’ve seen is the Brignac we’re getting.
